'Fibre broadband' should mean glass wires poking into your router, reckons Brit survey

Malik01

Marketing shills will just rename it to "Fibre ready" and "Full Fibre" broadband. They definitely want the word "fibre" in there even though the difference between FTTC and FTTB is about a factor of 10, currently, and probably more in the future.

Uber: Ah yeah, we pay women drivers less than men. We can explain!

Malik01

Solution is obvious

The solution is very obvious if you ask me. The market needs to introduce a four-year graduate course for anyone interested in this career path. Your driver will be qualified from an Uber accredited institution with a B.Sc in Strategic Transportation Mindset and Trajectory Profitability Analytics, with the option of achieving an M.Sc upon the completion of a research project and a 400k word thesis on revolutionising said industry with Block-chain technology and Synergy.

For students who are more hands-on, a 12 month unpaid industry experience internship with Uber is also available for students expected to achieve a first class degree.

The £36000 (+interest) investment will pay for itself, given that the applicants pass the 8-rounds of competency interviews and have relevant work experience, of course.

Age of enlightenment indeed.

Samsung releases 49-inch desktop monitor with 32:9 aspect ratio

Malik01

Thats a whopping 81 pixels per inch. I will stick with real 4k.

I have been intrigued with the ultra wides (21:9) aspect ratio, but I cannot get myself to downgrade from 3840x2160. Once you get used to this resolution, anything under 150 PPI really sticks out. I guess I will have to wait for the 4k ultrawides (5120x2160) @ 120hz :D

Re: 5 year warranty for the EVO, not 10 years.

To put all this into context, I have only managed to write 7 TBs to my laptop ssd, having used it everyday (for more than just browsing) over 2.5 years.

Malik01

5 year warranty for the EVO, not 10 years.

Please correct your info. The 850 EVO (TLC) comes with 5 year warranty and 75TB rating.

I believe its the 850 Pro (MLC) which has the 10 year warranty (and 150 TB rating + also uses 3D NAND). Impressive either way imo.

FYI, the 840 Pro was declared the winner of an 18 month long SSD endurance test by TechReport where it managed to achieve 2.5 Petabytes of writes before dying, despite being rated for 100TB (5 year warranty).

The 850 Pro is thought to be even more durable given that Samsung has increased its warranty and rating to 10 years and 150TB. Hopefully someone (with money to burn) will test its endurance accordingly.

Hairy situation? Blade servers can reach where others can't

Malik01

Re: I used to like blades......

Power cycling chassis?? I hope you are joking. What kind of upgrade requires this?

Just to be clear, you can reboot the management modules without affecting the blades. They keep going but you lose comm via the admin module.

I have also heard of issues when inserting wildly outdated blades which end up affecting neighbors, but never the whole chassis. Please clarify your use of the term "chassis". I have dozens of customers who would bin their Blade systems if the chassis power cycled for minor updates...

Red Bull does NOT give you wings, $13.5m lawsuit says so

Malik01

At no point does the lawsuit even mention that they were expecting to grow wings. This was purely a tabloid addition. Reg I was expecting better. Stop emulating the daily mail and consider presenting facts sometimes. The lawsuit is actually interesting and argues that the beverage provides no more advantages than normal coffee.

Search, done. Ads, done. What next for Google? Domain registration

Malik01

Now that companies can buy their own TLD, I expect lots of smaller domain registrars to pop up and offer these services. I wouldnt mind having a few dot-google addresses. Opens up possibilities for e-businesses that would otherwise have been liable for copyright infringement.

Not only Pornography

If you have been following the Tabloid-frenzy, there has been talk of some ISPs blocking violence, porn and drug promoting website in the interest of protecting children ad nauseum. This is one hell of a slippery slope and with certain tabloids armed with shear retard strength and their knee-jerk readership and lets not forget a leadership that licks the ass of any cause that can garner an iota of popularity, you have the formula for truly fucked up state of affairs.
