Vivaldi boss: It'd be cool if Google went back to the 'not evil' schtick

Re: Well...

Don't worry. Google put Boston Dynamics up for sale as soon as they lost the DARPA contracts. No sense building killer robots without a buyer.

On the nose

Andrew, Your analysis hit the mark, like a kinetic energy transfer from the US electorates clenched fist to the nasal region of Silicone Valley. (icon because I miss-spelled Silicon on purpose because I think they're all boobs)

IoT is more than light bulbs

IoT is taking Information Technology practices and applying them to other disciplines. Like connecting up all the freezers and fridges in a grocery store to monitor temperature and apply access controls. It's monitoring a fleet of trucks and the trailers to improve efficiency and to monitor drivers. You may not want a smart lighting system in your home but office buildings are cutting costs with them. IoT is monitoring the flow of cell phones through public spaces for analysis. IoT is camera's on light posts that can monitor for open parking spaces. IoT is us applying what we know to the rest of the world.

Amish sell Poo

I bought a gargoyle that is to be set in your garden that was molded out of poo to slowly melt away and feed the plants, . They also sold other garden dwelling critters of excrement, they were called PooPets if I remember correctly. Gifted it to my father.

SLA

I connect to an ISP and there is an SLA in place that guarantees me a minimum service level. Netflix connects to an ISP and there is an SLA in place that guarantees them a minimum service level. The various ISPs connect to each other with an SLA in place that guarantees a minimum service level. The source and destination should have nothing to do with billing. Where did this simple setup get broken?

Windows

I can't help but wonder what you people are doing wrong. I have McAfee SaaS End Point protection which is just a cloud managed version of their AV software and it runs great. I've seen no slow down on Windows 7 or 8. Updates and Scans happen when no one is looking so they don't hinder a thing either. I was able to show my kids the reports that showed how many times they visited risky websites and they actually took the information and modified their behavior. After the third month they started heeding the warnings and their computers have not had to be re-imaged since. (Re-imaging was an every other month affair when they discovered Minecraft mods)

Re: t-mobile rocks....

I have the same T-Mo plan that costs $50 a month, but you add a 2nd line for $30, and a 3rd line for 15, and a 4th line for 5 (or something close to that, that equals $100 a month) So I pay $25 a month for our families 4 lines. Each additional line costs the minimum so when my youngest needs a phone we'll tack on another, so the price per line goes down further. We yanks aren't all getting ripped to badly, accounting for exchange rate differences.

more to the NUC

Sad that a tech site can't be bothered to install an OS correctly. Win 8 gives a Win experience index score of 5.5 on due to the low video score... but it does give a score.

The NUC boards are also sold in 10pks so ODMs can make their own products, including passively cooled models. (I work in the distribution channel in the states) There are close to a dozen 3rd party chassis for these boards already.

This is a proof of concept product, intended to establish the form factor. They'll play with it for a few years until the business is established then they will duck out and go back to making just the chips.
