Up up and Huawei in my beautiful buffoon: Trump sparks panic by tying tech kit ban, charges to China trade negotiations

Palladium

The U.S have nothing but threats to offer on the 5G front, and they are surprised others aren't listening to their drivel?

Peak Apple: This time it's SERIOUS, Tim

Soft drinks taste awful, unhealthy and it's expensive versus clean tap water. I shudder at the thought at how anyone could habitually drink that all day.

Re: Durability?

At least in Singapore a USD250 phone from either Huawei or Oppo a 2 year warranty is standard while iPhones only get 1 year even if you got most uber-expensive 512GB XS Max.

On the OS update side you can rage about Android updates all you like but older versions like 7.0 is already so good that most people simply don't care anymore and iOS updates aren't exactly flawless either (cough iOS 11 cough).

US government charges two Chinese spies over jet engine blueprint theft

Palladium

Re: They need to steal more than just the blueprints.

Yup I'm sure bottom barrel Chinese made consumer gear is very indicative of their real industrial products like things that go into their HSR which has like half the accident rates per distance versus the Japanese,

But it's OK you can keep up with the cheap junk memes bro

Forgotten that Chinese spy chip story? We haven't – it's still wrong, Super Micro tells SEC

Palladium

Re: More questions

Not to mention the EE industry is obsessed with BoM costs and even an unneeded 1 cent board component would find itself on the chopping block, much less a suspicious spy chip.

Samsung: Swanky hardware alone won't save a phone maker

Palladium

even without Samsung's bloat

Their hardware specs per dollar ratio sucks so much alpaca butt to begin with that it's a non starter.

On the other hand if I'm a "ZOMG my time and data is worth millions" kinda of guy I would rather just get an iPhone or two.

Samsung Galaxy A9: Mid-range bruiser that takes the fight to Huawei

Palladium

Re: Mid-what?

Xiaomi's Pocophone F1 is practically the US version of the Samsung S9+ without AMOLED, NFC and a weaker camera, but priced at a mere USD 300 shipped. Its devices like these that makes people wonder why Samsung even bother to makes anything but flagships.

Palladium

Re: 6 gigabytes

Well from first hand experience Android on 3GB is much smoother and snappier than 2GB. There isn't any good reason to buy any 2GB device these days.

Also, low end and midrange Samsung phones has always been trash in value/$, especially when their own flagships usually have some sort of hefty discounts, while Xiaomi/Huawei just completely destroys their lineup below that.

PC makers: Intel CPU shortages are here to stay ... for six months

Palladium

Intel needs to be less sidetracked by chasing the process node leadership white elephant and be more focused on how to be a chip design leader. The signs are pointing the basic Skylake uarch since 2015 is still gonna hold the fort till 2020, and AMD getting a *mere* 10% IPC increase on Zen 2 is gonna torpedo Intel left, right and center even on a lesser but much cheaper process node.

US and UK Amazon workers get a wage hike – maybe they'll go to the movies, by themselves

Palladium

Re: What's the net benefit to workers?

Good luck explaining to the average Americans on how a proper welfare net actually saves money in the long run because that sick pauper left to dry is going to hit the expensive hospital A&Es much more often because he has no money to get minor aliments treated in time etc...Because they lack any intellectual capacity or curiosity to take in anything other than dumbed down political buzzword of the week.

Canadian security boss ain't afraid of no Huawei, sees no reason for ban

Re: Hmm...

The same boogeyman reason the US govt keeps blaming China as top #1 polluter while 'Murica uses 200% more electricity per capita than China and burn 25% more coal per capita in 2017 while having nowhere near the industrial base China possess.

US cities react in fury to FCC's $2bn break for 5G telcos: We'll be picking up the tab, say officials

Palladium

Who wanna bet

Evil communist red China gets 100% 5G coverage years before the US while the MAGA ilk will still be chanting USA always #1? C'mon even California can't build a short high speed rail at a timetable and budget considered reasonable to save their lives.

In a race to 5G, Trump has stuck a ball-and-chain on America's leg

Palladium

Re: remind me why we need China for 5G...

The US can't plan a long term strategy worth a damn, they don't even realize all the tariffs do is to make China putting even more effort into their developing their high tech industries to reduce foreign dependence as if they aren't already massively into doing it already.

I live in Singapore, and now Shenzhen makes it look like a backwater. For those still underestimating China as a sh**hole, let them enjoy being clueless for now because they won't even know what's gonna hit them in the next decade.

$200bn? Make that $467bn: Trump threatens to balloon proposed bonus China tech tariffs

Palladium

Re: We've already started referring to this as the Trump Tax

At this point everyone regards US sanctions as some random stray dog barking down their street.

Palladium

-$1+ trillion / year fiscal deficits as new normal without a recession.

-Record and increasing military spending without a war.

-Petrodollar in jeopardy.

-Crumbling infrastructure.

-Appalling general education standards.

-More identity politics.

-Worst foreign policy of an US administration, ever.

What we are looking at is America in an irreversible decline.

The age of hard drives is over as Samsung cranks out consumer QLC SSDs

Palladium

Firstly, virtually all SSD failures aren't due write endurance limits, and overall they are a magnitude more reliable than HDDs on a normalized timeframe. Google proved that in their 2016 paper.

Secondly, people are still beating the endurance boogeyman for consumer drives intended, you know, for consumers with inane arguments like "how would I trust my $10000+ intensive I/O critical operation on a <$200 consumer SSD with relative low write endurance?".

Thirdly, I'm not interested in any Samsung consumer SSDs, QLC or not, because they are always overpriced to their competitors.

New age discrim row: Accenture, Facebook sued by sales boss for favoring 'new blood'

Re: Difficult to stop

Ah yes, we do have hiring discrimination laws to prevent this sort of things by enforcing them only when the companies are stupid enough to incriminate themselves. The system is working just fine.

Re: Don't be evil

They have been quietly paying those Youtube creators making all those creepy sexual predatory videos targeted to kids and make them popular with their algorithm, so they can rake in that sweet sweet viewcount ad money.

Oh when the outrage happens, just conveniently blame the creators or "not my fault that you sickos demanded it" or "we can't afford to regulate so many videos online with our hundred billion budget".

Nope, not evil at all.

Now that's a dodgy Giza: Eggheads claim Great Pyramid can focus electromagnetic waves

Cheap NAND nasty: Flooding market with chips threatens prices

Palladium

Re: Ab Fab economics

Because the East Asian governments have the patience and insight to build up their manufacturing bases while shrewd enough to shield them with quiet protectionism, than to engage in #1221312312424 political outrage of the week of schizophrenic Western democracies.

Palladium

NAND armchair analysis time

-The upgrade cycle of phones are getting longer and longer = less demand.

-For most people the added benefits of PC SSDs drops precipitously past the 250GB mark which is more than big enough for an OS boot drive, those 250GB SSDs also has been very affordable for years and paper spec performance no longer matters = less demand.

-Chinese domestic NAND suppliers will finally be competing with the rest in 2019, and for that everyone is aggressively ramping up supply to grab as much as the market share pie possible. The Chinese NAND won't be nowhere as good as Samsung's best, but they will be priced very aggressively to move.

FBI boss: We went to the Moon, so why can't we have crypto backdoors? – and more this week

Palladium

The real irony is how we were able to get to the moon in the 1960-70s but yet we can't do it now despite with our massively more collective global wealth. I think I know the answer why: unbridled capitalism concentrates said wealth into the hands of the few, who has no vision with their money other than getting more of it while spending them on their 1000th real estate, luxury yachts and Ferraris.

Palladium

Re: Here's why

Government asking for their own master key as a standard for a crypto scheme to thwart criminals is in the same vein as doing away the police and let just criminals report themselves because these are definitely the kind people that wants to get caught for their deeds. Both are equally just as retarded.

Re: GPS

I drive and rely a lot on Google Maps in a city where GPS multipath interference is supposed to hurt but yet I never had navigational errors from GPS inaccuracies in current gen phones. It's always things like unreported road closures and non-updated landmark changes.

Then again common sense works a whole lot better when near a destination than blindly relying on GPS.

Is ~30cm accuracy a good thing? Of course. But will I pay more for it, not really...It's the good enough adage all over again.

Palladium

"Good enough" strikes back again

There's no exciting, real and meaningful differentiation of old versus new, or new low-end versus new high-end in consumer electronics for most people anymore, and the only left to compete is price.

-3 year old phones are entirely usable as long as you replace the battery

-5+ year old PCs are still more than fast enough

-Nobody cares about overpriced OLED, HDR, 4K, Quantum whatever backlight except for niche videophiles

Western Digital wonders why enterprise isn't keen on its solid-state drives

Law of good enough strikes again

Relaxed Windows 8 rules hint at smaller slabs to come

Palladium

The PC industry now is filled so much conflicts of interest that it is almost amazing it hasn't crumbled yet.

1. MS still wants their license fees from their OEMs for an OS that nobody wants.

2. Intel wants $600 ultrabooks/tablets from OEMs but still wants their $200+ per chip.

3. OEMs are sick of Wintel pushing the majority of costs to them and are now heavily shifting focus to ARM devices.
