Personally (and it is just that) I recommend Pluralsight as they cover a wide range of topics of cloud to a good depth and what's nice is that they package them up so that you know where to start etc etc.

Disclaimer: I do actually get a free sub from them due to being a vExpert. That said, I would (and have) paid for it in the past, Pluralsight that is. ;) I just think they are good, affordable and you can even put the courses on your ipad/whatever for offline viewing (Think journey to work).

People looking to learn Azure however do have a bigger hill to climb because MS is stuck with the old Azure interface and the new and there are some gotchas. Even the experts moan about that :)

Finally, be careful on the docs you read/watch re: Azure. Anything older than mid 2015 is probably plain wrong these days. Not detracting from the platform, just sayin :)

Well you will mysteriously find is that the card reader suddenly "doesn't work". It does but they claim it doesn't. Frequent occurrence in the US. It is very much a cash business and people paying with card don't do "keep the change".

Once upon a time they were best of British. Now owned by some Chinese company ^H^H^H government. The same government that is basically screwing the entire western world whilst we do nothing about it.

Such tech already exists

This long standing problem was fixed in a way by Flattr. Basically you load up your Flattr account with the amount of money you wish to spend in a month to reward sites. Each site that supports Flattr has a "thing" where you can decide what percentage of that monthly payment you want to go to the site in question.

At the end of the month, the money in your accounts gets apportioned on the % allocated. Good idea, but it doesn't seem to go big because at the end of the day people are not prepared to pay if they don't have to. Sad but true. Someone has to pick up the bill for all this lovely content written by the authors or they would starve.

That is all I have to say. I mean it just created visions of noodle eating hippy stoners straight out of the Silicon Valley series.

Shit name, shit culture and druggie name too boot. What could possibly go wrong. I have visions of this little Asian assistant muttering under her breath about that MOFO who she works for as she can't get a better job and an asshat CEO much like that of "Huli" or whatever it was called in the series.

I wouldn't do business with em as all I would ever be thinking is "Stoners".

It is also sadly (or happily) the first time a legal begal has actually provided me with entertainment, and for free.

I really like the fact that some are manufactured in the UK. It used to be the Maplin mob still bought Chinese made ones because they were cheaper. I'd go out my way to support the UK makers and buy it online rather than popping down Maplins, money grabbing barstewards.

It kinda makes sense.

IBM is pushing z-linux (Modified RHEL) on Mainframe. Main use is very very cheap websphere. Cobol runs on mainframe a lot right :)

Obviously they couldn't afford to do the same and buy RHEL, and CentOS is often given the hairy eyeball due to vendor support.

Also Virtzilla virtual appliances are mostly based on SuSe. Ideas could include pre-baked Cobol appliances running on SuSe. Containerised Cobol, makes sysadmins life easier I suspect.

Why Apple will continue to kick the PC manufacturers arse

Recently, after splurging over a grand on a Thinkpad running 8.1, knowing the quality of them and having owned 2, I went back to Apple. The Thinkpad I got had just the worst quality construction. Plastic hinges, the loudest most inaccurate trackpad known to man and a battery life less than 2.5 hours.

With the Apple hardware, it was a breath of fresh air. It just works and there is no abomination called Metro. I get 6 hours plus, even when hammering it with Fusion VMs and all manner of other pap.

I am no fanboy but I enjoy the products. Yes, they are expensive (but a similarly non home spec Dell wasn't too far off the MBP price), but they work. You can feel the superior quality. Aluminum rather than some crappy plastic bits that break off. OS updates that cost next to nothing wheras MS comes in at a whopping £80+ for standard retail boxes.

What really made it for me thought was that the macbook just failed one night, after 15 days of usage. I took it back to the Apple store and they just swapped it. No messing about. A straight swap and a sincere apology. Can you imagine ever getting that from Dell ? No, I don't think so.

Small one man (or woman) businesses will buy Apple because it's good stuff, and almost every app seems to be web based these days, so no real issues. Just plug in and go. No fighting with the OS to just actually be useful.

I will now brace for a downvote, for the haters that want to make their lives a misery using 8.1 on the nasty plastic crap.

Couldn't agree more

I don' think I am the only one that is sick of this big money BS with "Official this of the world cup, official that of the world cup" I did wonder quite how many official provider badges they can milk out. "Official hooker" or "Official bog cleaner".

I am no football fan. I will however watch England play. That said. I can totally see the BS that is going on. It is true that money has ruined what was once a world wide enjoyable event.

Yes it may be me, but I just hate it when big business gets in the way. Same with the Olympics and especially the BS around using the word for God's sake. You shouldn't be allowed to restrict a word that has been round for so long and in such global usage.

Whilst I can get the sentiment, waste of resources etc, you are missing the point. People have the right to ask for information. It doesn't really matter WHAT the use is (more or less). The right to ask the questions is one that is enshrined in law.

If it where not for journo's using FOI requests, we would still be in the dark about Duck houses and other MP claims that were plainly not related to their dealings as an MP.

Thank you for the kind comments. I am more than happy to help anyone with any questions they may have. I agree that being Aspie is not a handicap btw, we just do our stuff a bit different and bring different skills to the table. However office politics is something I think most of us suck at :)

As for the spectrum, it is just that. Some of us have very mid cases, some of us have really bad cases.

For me, being told about it answered so many of the "why I do stuff the way I do it" Including being a bit of a library nerd in school.

Thank you for your kind comments. I am glad it seems to have hit the spot.

To answer some of the questions..

I was based in North Wales, so there is definitely help. It depends how proactive your workplace is in helping you I guess. The access to work is a free service also (or at least as far as I am aware it was).

If anyone want's more specifics, I am happy to help. Not sure quite how to contact me, but feel free.

I also believe that we do have a lot to bring, we just work different :) And sometimes people can take advantage of that.

Also, if you find a good GP, they are worth their weight in gold.

You are being a tad unfair..

When I first clicked on it I was expecting "Cook funds secret island resort via paid for meetings". Then when I read it they are donating the money to charity. They are giving up some of their valuable time (looking at in a purely $$ scenario) and the money going to a good cause. Ok it wouldn't be my first choice. Something like Unicef or Red Cross may have been better in my opinion but still, if you could easily get huge donations for charity for some of your time, I would hope you would do it.

Also, and somewhat unfortunately, I suspect most of the slots will be purchased by Lobbyist types.

Hi,

Just to say that I am one of the geeks that loves SC games and this one got all my juices tingling. However I NEVER play online, on any game. It's just not for me. Then the DRM, so I decided I had to skip it. However i happened upon Civitas on kickstarted. Looks almost as awesome, but it is a) Cheaper b) DRM free c) Indie studio developed. I signed up for $25 worth. A bargain me thinks. I would put a linkie in here but I am at work, and for some bizarre reason they block kickstarter!

Anyhow, go, search and hopefully sign up and get a good alternative (oh it has bendy roads too ;) )
