Ring of fired: Amazon axes multiple workers who secretly snooped on netizens' surveillance camera footage

's water music

Re: Why did they do it?

I wouldn't want to grant access to the typical vendors because of the events in this story though and/or they'd use the data to help advertisers to sell junk to me.

Indeed. If I wanted to view an advertiser's junk, I'm sure I could find one who has a Ring camera and then just identify a cooperative Amazon employee

But also while she was on holiday Huawei's text app managed to take over as default and kick out the standard one. ...I'd normally blame a pushy Huawei app, they've got copies of all the standard Google versions, presumably so they can have all your data instead ...But despite her claims of innocence I still supsect Mum fell for agreeing to a "would you like me to be the default app" pop-up.

My ageing Huawei Ascend G7 (coming up to five years old, battery still fine thanks) rebooted into safe mode the other day (not sure if it was a pocket press of the power button or a random crash, reboot) and once I retsarted back into normal mode I noticed that messaging had defaulted back to the Huawei app and the NFC payment provider had done the same. No drama to switch them back but your mum might be at risk of a miscarriage of justice after all.

Hopefully he will ensure due process is followed ----------------------->

Re: How to be a thief

a short story, supposedly written by a retired thief. The guy said that it was a full time job, and very hard work. However the key points were to never repeat the same act, and to keep it small, down to minor inconvenience level. Said thief was apparently now living comfortably but not outlandishly, and had never come to the attention of the law.

I have a similar scam going. I have set myself up as an 'employee' and I supply 'labour' to my 'employer'. I even do some work for them during the day to keep it convincing. Most of my work causes only minor inconvenience so it sounds like I am on the right track. In another 15 or 20 years I expect to fulfil my dream to live comfortably (though not outlandishly) but if the filth ever do get wind of it I swear they are never going to take me alive.

Re: If DAB is faster than FM

probably due to the processing chain in going from the analog broadcast world to the digital broadcast world

I suspect that the delays are more likely to be caused by the acceleration and deceleration of the DAB radio waves as they leave the transmitter and enter the receiver. Either that or the FM radio wave supply chain has introduced efficiencies in an effort to stave off the mooted shutdown

vegetable errors

many years ago I scripted a client migration process in Winbatch (good times). There were a number of failure points that would leave a client disconnected so the script had several checkpoints where it would abort and report why to the user. Knowing, from my previous career progression through helldesk and support teams, that users never report error messages properly I thought I would theme mine with vegetable names in the window titles instead of error numbers. Broccoli was the mots common by a long way but I think there were a couple of others that merited a kbase article of their own. The tickets that came to me almost always included the correct vegetable which made support way easier.

Blindly adding in suicides, who will generally find a method to kill themselves if they want to, even if they don't have a gun

Suicidal thoughts are often situational and transient, so having a simple palatable method on-hand such as a firearm might increase suicide rates in a may that, say, having a chainsaw or needing to stockpile controlled meds over a period of time might not.

As for the original claim, we all know correlation!=causation. There could be some but it is plausible that gun control/crime rate crime rate causal links could work in either direction if it is there at all.

20% of UK businesses would rather axe their contractors than deal with IR35 – survey

's water music

Re: Dangers of moving from outside to inside IR35

If you could have found perm people and you were willing to pay them enough and treat them well, then you probably would not have needed the contractors in the first place.

It could be that some orgs judge that the value of clarity of tax liabilities justifies a higher perm salary which can now attract the right candidates for a position that would previously have needed a contractor.

Also, as almost all business decisions are capricious and stupid so it may just be a category error to attempt to deduce the reasoning.

Re: How about

... many owners feel the risk is small enough to trust it under some circumstances...

Even if you assume that these owners are accounting for the risks externalised by their being inside a vehicle and for the benefits which accrue to themselves only then you are still relying on human judgement of risks from infrequent events and that is not a register where humans perform well.

The .amazon argy-bargy is STILL going on – and Uncle Sam has had enough with ICANN

's water music

but I can't see that people deliberately trying to be obstructionists have any legitimacy

Sometimes obstruction is the only leverage in an asymmetric dispute since this is ultimately about politics between Brazil and the US. Presumably the US gov doesn't care enough to offer a worthwhile quid quo pro to Brazil. I have some sympathy with ICANN ducking the issue until the underlying dispute is resolved. Maybe I would feel differently if it were a another organisation caught in the crossfire other than amazon but it's hard to see how much actual pain this causes them even if I cared

UK ads watchdog slaps Amazon for UX dark arts after folk bought Prime subs they didn't want

's water music

cancelling prime trials

I have signed up for prime trials (on purpose) several times. My kids also always want to whenever they are buying anything with their amazon accounts because PFYs hate to wait for deliveries. I think the first time I signed up, it was made pretty clear that you could instantly cancel and would still get the 30 days of free next-day delivery but last time I did it they made it sound like cancellation would stop the benefits immediately, so encouraging you to forget to cancel later.

I thin the one time that someone forgot to cancel in time and was charged for the fist month they did get a pro-rated refund so that actual amount billed was pretty small.

You have to assume that Amazon will always be evil and if you can't see the scam, you haven't looked hard enough so I work hard to instill paranoia and suspicion into my kids

Re: That's a big assumption

You're basically assuming that nothing managers do can have any positive impact, only negative

That is obviously a somewhat facile view but if you accept that the things that managers are trying to influence are so complex and the tools that are available have very nebulous links to the outputs (which themselves may be difficult or impossible to measure effectively) then there is a tremendous moral hazard that tempts everyone to seek out evidence to support the expected outcome from the action taken. So even if we assume that more managers are acting in good faith than bad, confirmation bias will apply selection pressure in favour of the thing we did over the thing we didn't or aren't doing regardless of its actual impact.
