Weird PHP-poking Linux worm slithers into home routers, Internet of Things

TheVogon

Re: Is it 1998 already

"Not exactly spreading - infects via php vuln, so it needs a running webserver to allow the infection, and then it tries to infect, using a binary from a single, known server, any other networked webserver using a small, motley collection of usernames/passwords."

Sounds like spreading to me

"After that where does it go ?"

To more similarly vulnerable devices presumably....

TheVogon

Then why bother posting it? Just makes you look like a pedantic twat....

Richto was my previous name on here - changed because of confusion it was some sort of boast about wealth - not a new account

"Yes, because IIS exploits are of course largely theoretical..."

IIS has a very good security record - one of the more secure platforms....current versions (IIS 8 / 8.5) have zero known vulnerabilities I believe....and before that you have to go back years to find anything that affected a default installation of an IIS webserver...

As per website defacement statistics - you are several times more likely to be hacked running say Linux....

Xbox One FAILS to beat PS3 - yes, PS 3 - week one sales

Nope - the Xbox 360 has even outsold the Wii in the UK - it's the UK's top selling console last generation console..

Re: A Sham just like the Xbox360 launch?

I was at the actual Xbox 360 launch event in the Mojave Desert, and the only Microsoft employees there were running the show....

Seeing as the Xbox One Pre-Orders sold out months before it went on sale, those in the queues would have been purchasers...

'I had to sign an NDA not to talk about it' - lol to supposedly queue at a launch - that was already a sell out? I call Bullshit.

It is much higher than that. Sony are of course only counting fault calls they receive directly. Not the many more items being returned via retailers that havn't hit them yet...

Re: I'm in

"Indeed, BeOS (the company) was destroyed by MS OEM licencing that forbade OEMS from dual booting multiple operating systems."

Microsoft always allowed you to choose once from multiple preinstalled OSs. What they didn't allow you to do was boot Windows via a 3rd party boot loader or dual boot Windows. Which for support and security reasons makes sense - as well of course of locking out the competition from a co-existence embrace and replace strategy...

Apple iOS 7 security bug allows fiendish wags to easily empty your wallet

Re: WP

"Wrong. SecureBoot requires a UEFI bootloader. WP is firmware, not UEFI."

Wrong: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=266838

Windows Phone architecture uses a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) design provided by SoC vendors. The SoC vendor and device manufactures provide the pre-UEFI boot loaders and the UEFI environment. The UEFI environment implements the UEFI secure boot standard that is described in section 27 of the UEFI Specification (http://www.uefi.org/specs). This standard describes a process by which all UEFI drivers and applications are validated against keys provisioned into a UEFI runtime variable before they are executed.

The UEFI and Windows document (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en- us/windows/hardware/gg463149.aspx) on MSDN describes the advantages of using UEFI and how UEFI is supported by desktop versions of the Windows operating system. Although the document focuses on UEFI and Windows, most of the information in the document also applies to Windows Phone.

Microsoft provides the Windows Phone boot manager in the UEFI environment. After the pre-UEFI and UEFI components complete their boot processes, the Windows Phone boot manager takes over to complete the Windows Phone 8 boot process so that the user can start using the smartphone. All code in the Windows Phone operating system is signed by Microsoft, including OEM drivers and applications. Also, applications that are added after manufacturing, or installed from the Windows Phone Store or a private enterprise store must be properly signed to execute

PlayStation daddy on new PS4: She's ALL 'PLAY', NO 'Station' this time

TheVogon

Re: The PS3 was and still is a top-notch product

"Whilst it's true that the Xbox One is struggling to achieve 720p 60FPS, all the PS4 release multiplatform titles handle 1080p 60FPS without trouble,."

Not true - BF4 is upscaled on the PS4 - and looks worse than on the Xbox One as the PS4 upscales in software, whereas the Xbox One does it in hardware....And Watch Dogs only runs at 30fps on the PS4...

Forza 5 is 60fps / 1080p on the Xbox One - so it's possible to do - the Xbox One has advanced compressed texture tiling technology and a 200GBps on chip cache that the PS4 doesn't - that will take developers a while to learn to use....

The PS4 is a games only crippled PC - no CD, no MP3, no DNLA, etc, etc. I can't see why anyone would buy one versus a PC.

The Xbox One at least does a lot more that you can't currently do on a PC with Kinect and the HDMI input capability...

Virgin Media only puts limited limits on its Unlimited service

TheVogon

Re: Anyone here using Virginmedia?

"Wouldn't transferring my data outside the EU without my express permission fall foul of EU Data Protection Laws?"

Nope. Safe harbour provisions assume that companies will apply an appropriate level of diligence to your data if they store it in the colonies - but with no way of enforcing it if they don't....

Hopefully the Edward Snowden revelations will change all that and Europe will start taking the US approach of forcing compliance with our laws on those that want to do business with us...

Re: Why the hell...

" I download same 8.1 on torrents I get about 10mb"

Use port 554, forced encryption, allow ~700 peers, and limit upload speed to say 5Mbps. Then you will easily max it out....

TheVogon

Re: Why the hell...

No Virgin speed issues here - I can max out my connection any time of day without much difficulty. The fastest home service I have ever had, and I have tried a few 'fibre' based ones. I can hit the claimed 120Mbps down / 12Mbps up quite easily.

I suggest that your neighbour's issues are likely due to the Internet - not Virgin.

Your comparison is not valid as you are not testing anything remotely similar....

TheVogon

Re: What a bunch...

But Zen don't seem to offer anything close to a 120 Mbps service? The highest seems to be "up to 76 Mbps" for £25 + VAT

Also it doesn't seem to be available without a phone line costing another £17 + VAT a month....

Virgin 120 Mbps costs £35 + VAT with no phone line required....so cheaper.

Nokia emerges smothered in red ink, manages to flog cheapo Windows Phones

Why did Nokia bosses wait so long to pop THAT Lumia tab?

TheVogon

Re: Nokia saves another MS OS?

"You are confused, or deliberately lying. Windows RT _is_ cut-down, it doesn't have a complete Win32 desktop environment"

You don't understand what you are talking about. Win32 is a CPU specific API. Pretty much all of the underlying core Windows low level features are available in Windows RT - just via different APIs.

"Even Office RT is cut-down with many features not implemented."

The main feature missing is VBA - again which is largely CPU specific in terms of Add-Ins commonly used, etc...

"While Windows RT does run apps compiled for 'modern' these are not compiled to ARM _or_ x86 but to WinRT CLR."

Sure - but only for Metro Apps - and that's why Metro is the future Microsoft is pushing towards.....Cross platform from single compile, or where this is not possible, this is hidden via the Windows Store that automatically delivers the correct version....

"Actually Windows 64 can run 32 bit applications"

But not the other way round which is the point here.

Re: Too bad

"I'm surprised they didn't use R2 to launch a simpler way to link on-premise AD with 0365. My understanding is that ADFS can be a bear "

ADFS is designed as an Active Directory Federation solution for all requirements, so it would be more complex overall to offer multiple product versions. ADFS isn't that complex to setup and requires near zero management once configured....

"or they'd bake the needed parts of ADFS into standard server so it would already be linked"

ADFS is baked into Standard Server. You just select the Role you want installed using Server Manager....
