Apple pulls Civil War games in Confederate flag takedown

Re: Fast track to offense

John Devoy,

You should concern yourself with your own country and it's problems. You spout ignorance and hatred yourself.

STFU!

Hi-res audio folk to introduce new rules and weed out impure noises

Dan Paul

CD "Quality"

It's too bad but the original LP masters of older music are already compression limited and it takes "remastering" directly from tape to digital to fix that. All you need is for the A/D convertor to be beyond reproach, not better media.

If music was recorded when the vinyl LP was the primary playback method, the base frequencies were limited on the LP pressing master so the recording would fit on the LP. Only the master tape was at full dynamic range. Then there were the RIAA equalization curves applied during preamplification for playback.

A normal CD will capture all the detail and resolution of the old master tape which is why the latest Led Zeppelin cd's sound better than the LP (and different). Using high resolution CD's and "lossless" formats with a dirty source just gives you a really sharp but noisy CD.

Courtney Love in the crossfire! Paris turns ugly over Uber

Dan Paul

All the more reason

to leave the whole of Europe off your tourism list, Courtney. Don't worry though, those people assaulting your driver and damaging their vehicle are just "venting their frustrations". It's really not kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon. Too bad the Gendarme are too busy having a smoke break. Probably in the same union as the taxi drivers.

The French government can't stand any competition with their graft ridden status quo, they make up laws for what ever reason they want, apply them willy-nilly when ever they feel like and are only concerned with lining their pockets. No foreign corporate entity can do business anywhere in Europe without paying their literal "pound of flesh" and even then it's a crapshoot whether someone else will put their hand out or screw you one way or another. At least in the States you know where you stand and graft is a thing of the far past.

Capita: Call centre workers, can you fall on your swords? Please?

Dan Paul

Double Cross

Where do you think those jobs are going? The company or agency that outsourced work to Crapita in the first place wants an even cheaper price so Crapita has to outsource overseas. When will people learn outsourcing raises taxes on ALL taxpayers? Someone has to pay for the welfare bill.

Word to the wise, if you ever have to do local onsite support for them; give them the shaft as much as you can.

When every job has been outsourced, what happens then; I ask you?

US SaaS firm bows to Snowden concerns with UK-based datacentre

Dan Paul

Indeed, Indeed

Yes, Ashton,

You must mean the case where Microsoft is fighting the US prosecutor that wants the data because the US court has no sovereign rights over the Ireland based subsidiary of Microsoft? Is that any different than YOUR courts thinking they have rights over US corporations?

While we are at it, why don't YOU avoid the Internet all together. There is enough false F.U.D in the world.

Common sense would mean that latency dictates the location of a datacenter. You wouldn't tolerate a 2,000 second ping would you? That's as much the reason as anything why they would locate it closer to the point of use.

Pirate MEP pranks Telegraph with holiday snap scaremongering

Dan Paul

Same as the "Victim Mentality" that

leftwing politicians everywhere want everyone to have. They want you to be enraged at the "establishment that has been keepin us down man" to pressure politicians to listen to their shouty voices.

Reda is trying to link unrelated circumstances to create or amplify her freetard agenda. She and her ilk are not above outright lying to get their way. Orlowski is simply outing her behavior.

Taking pictures is not illegal for the most part unless you want to photograph certain sensitive facilities. "Trademarking" any outdoor structure that was built with public funds and then preventing photos is ridiculous and likely against public use legislation. If you can see it, you can likely take a photo of it.

That does not apply to certain "works of art" unfortunately. Music, Movies, Paintings and Literature have various protections and for good reason. The only one I disagree with is the long outdated Region Code nonsense. Artists and the studios that produce their art commercially deserve protections though 70 years is a bit long.

If you can't take a picture of the Eiffel Tower while you are a tourist in Paris, or the London Bridge while you are in London; you may as well stay home. How would that help the "Tourism Economy" that so many live on?

'Backronym' crowdfunds itself into Oxford English Dictionary

Dan Paul

For all those pedantic bastards out there....

as follows taken from the OED page referenced in the article

"Global varieties of English

The territorial expansions of the United Kingdom between the late 16th and early 18th centuries, and of the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries carried the English language around the world. In each country where English is spoken, whether as the primary national language or as a secondary language alongside others, it has changed and developed in the context of its new surroundings, not only through loanwords, but also through localized neologisms and changes in the usage of common English words."

Of particular note, please notice the opening phrase "Global varieties of English" and the last sentence of the paragraph.

You don't have a corner on the language, its usage or spelling anymore. It has been commoditized by sheer usage and changes too frequently to be locked in to your ideals anymore.

THEY WANTED OUR WOMEN: Neanderthals lusted after modern humans

Dan Paul

Re: Were Neanderthals really stupid?

Neanderthals did not become extinct, they interbred with cromagnon until their were fewer discernible traits. It's not the same thing as extinction. As I said, go to the beach sometime, you'll see Neanderthal genetic traits far too often.

Dan Paul

Re: Terminology

And since I am not Jewish and not one to mince words; I don't really care who made the change.

I don't recognize it has changed because the ONLY reason for different conventions was due to some PC Atheist Revisionist trying to make it less offensive to some other mental midgets.

Throwing away 2,000 years of historic reference for that reason is personally offensive to ME!

Dan Paul

Re: Terminology

@fishman

I am quite aware of that. I am also aware that both Hitler and Stalin revised history and religion for their own purposes.

YOU may not be aware that the ravings of a madman (Hitler or Stalin) do not make them relevant to my statement that you quoted, nor does it justify their actions. Lots of people "claim" to be religious, not all of them are.

FWIW The majority of people in Bavaria and Russia were "Catholic" before tyrants co-opted the religion.

Dan Paul

Re: Terminology

And BC and AD still do just fine to define era's.

Really, the Atheist PC history revisionists will have us "learning" that Stalin and Hitler were both nice guys, next. Hey I know, lets change the calendar too so there is less relation to Greek and Roman deities.

As far as "Speciation" is concerned, the Neanderthal type is still going strong. Been to the beach recently and you'd see.

My theory is that the Neanderthals were ideal for cold & wet weather survival throughout the Ice Ages and the less hairy Cromagnon were from later warmer climes where hair was a disadvantage from a heat and insect perspective.

Once they mixed genes, all sorts of regional varietal changes occurred. None of which are individual species as there has been too much intermixing over hundreds of thousands of years to discern much difference. Pigmentation has been used as an excuse to "speciate" the differences between people for too long. Let's make an effort to define where people came from and their ancestors through DNA to help alleviate that issue. I'm willing to bet there is a little bit of everyone in us by now.

The wonderful madness of metrics: Different things to different folk

Dan Paul

You get exactly what you didn't pay for....

and since you were a cheap b@st@rd you got nada.

Let's face it, even the expectation of 5 nines is unrealistic in most cases as there are just too many vendors and thus too many points of failure involved.

Use a datacenter located nearby and expect to have a backup ready and waiting if you need that kind of reliability.

Charge what that is worth to the customer.

If they can't afford it, propose less critical service and go to the cheapest datacenter vendor.

Explain the proposal in detail so they have a real understanding and get a signature that notes they have read and agree to the T's &C's if they sign an agreement.

Even Apple doesn’t mess with Taylor Swift

Dan Paul

Streaming is no different than....

FM Radio is, and the royalties should be the same. RIAA should grow up and consolidate all music royalty types and make them the same everywhere. One song play equals one musicians royalty, one distributor payment.

Musicians should be given at least 50% of the royalty payment if not more. Anything different is between musician and distributor, not the RIAA. The distributors should not be able to set the percentages in their favor.

It's good to see that someone with power like Swift can make a company like Apple take notice. Now let's get the "indies" to a place where they have that much power, or a codify some agreeable rules where they do. If we want to argue about equal pay for equal work, then paying musicians for their songs no matter who or when the are played, would be a good start and it would even be gender neutral.

And thanks Andrew for finally using a reasonable picture of Taylor Swift.

Verizon promised to wire up NYC with fiber... and failed miserably – audit

Dan Paul

Correct!

Lets add to that he's part of the vote buying entitlement circle jerk and counts on the city unions to keep him in office. That's changing soon enough.

The Verizon issue is a huge part of the political corruption going on in all of NY State. They are governed by the NY Public Dis-Service agency and there is a tariff that Verizon is supposed to use to maintain their existing wired network. It's about $5.00/month on every ones phone bill.

Except for the fact that Verizon won't authorize it's union technicians to do any repairs on those lines unless there is a business complaining and then not often. I have been told that directly by their technicians.

The NY Public Service Commission gets plenty of complaints, mine being one of them and yet will not rule against Verizon and recover the money so another could fix the problems.

The PSC and most State Agencies and Authorities are cesspits of political patronage and the friends and families of the influential get those jobs. Then they fail to regulate the industry they are charged with.

Climate change alarmism is a religious belief – it's official

Dan Paul

Re: When are you even going to see?

Why don't YOU provide proof it doesn't happen first? Because you can't provide proof of anything climate related here, only theory, models of theories and completely unmitigated conjecture interspersed with outright lying.

CO2 is produced by people breathing, plants, and combustion. However plants also use CO2 as food in the opposite cycle. What is released in one way is depleted in another. Algae in the ocean eat an enormous amount of ambient CO2. Data on what is "in the air" can't remain constant and if it does, proves that the data is fake or misleading. They "pick" locations with the highest concentrations and temps to use in their data and deprecate the rural areas with low CO2/Temps.

That can rarely happen to methane. Nothing but extremophile bacteria eat it and they are only around undersea volcanic vents. Animals and decaying vegetation produce it in abundance and it is naturally occurring at such volumes as to make deep sea mining of the hydrates viable.

It is lighter than air so surface gas analysis does not pick it up well. We don't have much measurement going on at the upper extent of the atmosphere. Much methane comes from the ocean and they don't station many gas analyzers there for obvious reasons. Also, when all your devices are tuned for CO2 you don't easily find methane. Ultraviolet radiation will eventually break the CH4 bonds and cause other gases to form at that altitude. Let's not even consider that H2O is a decent IR absorber too and could be forming at high altitude from the breakdown of hydrocarbon gases.

But the real reason you don't see it as affecting climate is that the so called climatologists have put ALL their eggs in the AGW CO2 basket and will be denied all future funding if they get an inch out of line with the propaganda.

Therefore no research will be done outside of the AGW climate fairytales. Blinded by "science", they won't look at ALL the players, only the one that got them funded.

Dan Paul

No, but I will....

"And I'm still surprised Page didn't throw a frothing fit over the recent 'warming pause was a measurement error' stories..."

Just another reason why I think the whole frikkin thing is the 2nd biggest lie perpetrated on humanity.

They "adjusted" the warming pause numbers to fit their argument.

Lying cheaters need to be ground into bonemeal.

Dan Paul

When are you even going to see?

CO2 is not the problem and never has been. This so called MM warming is BS to line the pockets of politicians and energy producers and always has.

Try looking at methane and other hydrocarbon gases as they are far more Infrared absorbing than CO2. Methane hydrate formations in the ocean are able to come out of the solid state and sublime into the gaseous state with nothing more than a mild earthquake. They rise to the top of the atmosphere and thus don't show in low altitude analysis. The decomposition of organic vegetable materials adds to these gases in various forms including methane and smog forming NOx, also IR absorbing.

The sheer biomass involved can't be ignored, except it has because of "scientists" more interested in funding than real science. This is a closed ecosystem and everything that affects it is cumulative. Favoring one issue over another doesn't change the fact that they are all present and must be accounted for. We have some human influence certainly, but that is not the only cause.

Dan Paul

Re: In other words, "When to act"

There have been PLENTY of leftwing Demoncrat Catholic politicians that have disagreed with the Pope about the abortion issue. That is definitely against the teachings and beliefs of the Church.

Let's consider the whole Cuomo family as persona non grata with the teachings of Catholicism as well as most Catholic politicians even many Republicans since they support something against church dogma. As you are trying to say, you can't have it both ways.

As far as I am concerned once a religion get political, they should lose their right to tax exempt status.

We can't trust most so called "scientists" on the AGW front because of the "groupthink or else" mindset they have. There is no room for discussions on the subject with them. They have OBVIOUSLY adjusted the climate numbers numerous times to fit their argument. Once they did that, everything they say must be considered a lie and you can't trust a liar.

The "Garbage Plate" from Nick Tahou's in Rochester

There is a diner style place in Rochester NY USA that has a thing called the "Garbage Plate".

This is a mainstay for drunk college students at RIT and U of R. Nick Tahou's in Rochester has been around since the '50's. This has been copied all over the area in one form or another.

Their Wiki states - "A Garbage Plate is a combination of two selections of cheeseburger, hamburger, red hots, white hots, Italian sausage, chicken tender, fish (haddock), fried ham, grilled cheese, or eggs; and two sides of either home fries, French fries, baked beans, or macaroni salad. On top of that are the options of mustard and onions, and Nick's proprietary hot sauce, a sauce with spices and slowly simmered ground beef. The dish is served with Italian bread and butter on the side.[2][3] Health.com named the Garbage Plate the fattiest food in the state of New York.[4]"

Re: Compensation? @alfred

In a war where no one wears a uniform on the "enemy" side it is almost impossible to tell who the combatants are. That's not our fault, it's the fault of the combatants who chose where to fight from.

When the enemy hides in the middle of a civilian area, innocent people will die. That is a fact of ANY war, not just this one. Expecting they are safe because of their location is risking "innocent lives".

Launching rockets from the courtyard of a residence is the act of cowards who are ultimately responsible for any death or injury to those who live there.

Propaganda is rampant in these wars as any dead can be called "innocent civilians" because they don't look different.

Blaming our service people for the activities of the enemy is the biggest act of cowardice you can commit!

Google-owned smart-gumble-maker Nest snubs Google's smart-gumble OS Brillo

Dan Paul

@Irongut Do you even understand.....

what most heating systems are in the USA where the NEST is designed? That why he spoke about the common use of furnaces. RTFM for details how the nest works with boilers, all thermostats that are programmable usually do.

FWIW the NEST is way over priced and there are plenty of products that work similarly.

Most homes here in the US have a forced air furnace unless in the far north where there are numerous boilers.

When the average temp is in the 60+F range, many homes in the deep south don't even have official heating systems.

What most heating systems here have in common here is Conditioning which uses air not water so fans are required and those with boilers use separate systems for AC if they even have it.

Downing Street secretly deletes emails to avoid exposure to FOIeurs

Dan Paul

Why Not?

We have the ridiculous email deletion example from Hilarity Clinton and the State Department and Lois Lerner and the Infernal Revenue Service.

Both deleted emails or destroyed data with impunity to avoid further investigation and prosecution and have never been brought up on charges for the crime of "Obstruction of Justice".

Therefore a legal precedent has been set that no one in the US can be accused of Obstruction for deleting critical evidence and the excuse "the internet ate my homework" is now fully valid.

If it was okay for those two, it is okay for me and everyone else.

Affects on jobs in USA

Tim,

40 years ago, the Auto, Steel and Coke industries were doing pretty well here in the Buffalo NY area.

The Rochester area had Xerox and Kodak doing quite well. The whole WNY economy was doing well.

Then came the various "Trade Agreements" that gutted these good paying middle class and entry level jobs and sent them out of the county. My job at GM went "south" as did many others and the plants have long since been mothballed or demolished. In their infinite wisdom, they tax empty facilities at the same rate as occupied facilities here. If there is no building on the property then the taxes are greatly reduced, therefore they demolish empty facilities rather than try to find new occupants. This effectively prevents new companies from filling in where the old ones were.

The Western NY area has never really recovered from the first wave of Trade agreements and they want another?

An agreement that we cannot even see or discuss? That the Obama administration can't see fit to release to the public just like ObamaCare?

There is NO doubt in my mind that this agreement allows Pacific partners to take even more jobs away and does nothing to prevent the further degradation of the middle class workers wages and benefits.

They already decreased the possible number of jobs by over 50% in many cases.

This is why your "standard economics" is wrong. These trade agreements drove people from their longtime homes and families, put them on the dole, ruined their lives and credit. They not only lost their jobs but nothing came to replace them.

There is NO agreement that guarantee's both the existing wages and number of jobs will not decrease. Anything less than that is a recipe for revolt and we are too close to that now to ignore it. Keeping the TPPA secret only serves to tell me it is very bad for normal people and there is nothing the Obama administration can say that is even remotely believable, especially about the TPPA.

I want a 100% tariff applied to any product that comes into this country that could have been made here. It is a baldface lie that the US or UK is not competitive in manufacturing when you factor out the ridiculous low wages that developing countries pay. Tariffs defray that difference and we either pay higher prices or higher taxes. I choose higher prices for manufactured goods over higher taxes so we can support a 98% socialist lifestyle.

In memoriam: Christopher Lee, Hammer's Count Dracula

Dan Paul

Way back in the stone ages...

I used to scare myself silly watching those Hammer films on Canadian TV channels late at night or even during broad daylight. I must have been in my early teens. I'd sneak into the living room and turn the TV on low. I remember screaming out loud and getting caught one night because of some shocking reveal of the Vampire in all his gory makeup. Christopher Lee WAS the Vampire and others paled by comparison.

He really did become his roles. That thundering voice and dark eyes truly demanded your attention.

Roles such as Scaramanga in the Man with the Golden Gun, Saruman in LOTR, Count Dooku in Star Wars, each were characters that played to his capabilities without being stereotypical. I'm surprised he did not do war movies too but as with many that were actually in WWII, they did not want to talk about or even acknowledge what happened.

Such a full life Lee had. We all could only hope to reach 93, let alone have over 250 acting roles to our credit.

4 new twists that push the hacker attack on millions of US govt workers into WTF land

Dan Paul

@ Doctor Syntax

This is entirely different situation as we are not enemies with ourselves. Foreign hackers stole info (including Social Security Numbers) from OPM (Office of Personnel Management) that could be used against people in this and other countries.

Your OWN governments are "spying" on you every day too and all the blowback from privacy advocates and Eurocrats regulations is not going to stop that. There is a big difference in intent between knowing you called Syria and arranged a flight for someone there on your credit card is helpful info and justifiably collected today, too bad if you don't like it. Stealing the personal info of tens of millions of employees with the intent to use it against them is not acceptable.

The issue here being that OPM has as many holes in their network as baby Swiss cheese, ALL of this data theft being the fault of the US government for poor security. At the very least, every one of those SSN should be replaced by the Feds and new credit histories be created for each affected person.

Duqu 2.0: 'Terminator' malware that pwned Kaspersky could have come from Israel

Dan Paul

Re: Not a game changer, this was never a game (Exactly AC)

I find it rather naïve that any anti-virus vendor wouldn't think they were already targeted by various hackers.

If Duqu 2.0 was that hard to find that a company, whose very business is to protect their customers from these viruses; didn't detect it for a long time then it must be very well written. By whom is the real question.

OR it could have been written with the ASSISTANCE of a virus software manufacturer and all this angst is a smokescreen to make it appear the Israelis are behind it when there are any number of "Bad Actors" that are closer to Kaspersky's operation who could have done it.

The chip on many womens' shoulders today is just amazing. Just as with minorities, the overcompensation of a "politically correct" society has resulted in arbitrary and capricious reverse discrimination and quotas that runs rampant over more qualified white males. Highly intelligent and old people don't have the time or energy for false ideologies. If you spout that kind of politically correct BS, you are just wasting your breath. The only ones putting their feet in their mouths are the whiny social studies babies that can't live without someone to blame for their own shortcomings. Shove them in deeper, maybe we'll all get lucky and they'll choke.

"Modern Institutions" (that want Nobel prize winning scientists instead of problematic whiners) usually know how to deal with them without involving HR.

Dan Paul

Political correctness taken to an extreme

Unfortunately, the PC police are taking everything to an extreme these days. There is no room for individual thoughts or comments because everything is being examined for "non conformity" with the groupthink message that some believe must be obeyed "or else". You can't even offer an opinion without offending at least one overly sensitive party these days. People my age don't care much anymore, if you don't like the opinion, then read between the lines. The truth may hurt, but it is still the truth regardless.

Unrequited love certainly comes in different forms but the upshot is that it is quite distracting for at least one of the involved parties and that affects the research being done.

You can't really treat women as equals with men as they will still pull out the "weaker sex" card when they don't like what's being demanded of them. Firefighters, Military and Police and other first responder jobs don't allow that game to be played nearly as much, while Office jobs still do.

The fact is that you still shouldn't consider any "relationship" at work unless one of you leaves.

Re: 2 alarm bells from Ross McKitrick

Trends that are artificially adjusted are not valid. Raw data that is artificially adjusted is not valid.

Two crap "readings" do not make valid data.

Data that is too insignificant to pop out of this "noise" is not valid.

We are NOT interested in "trends", only the actual truth.

Did the ACTUAL DATA increase and by how much, not "We adjusted the data because it didn't say what we wanted."
