Software manufacturers should be required by international law to provide security patches and updates for their software forever? They KNOW that customers do stupid things.

Maybe software like this should just stop working if the client does NOT patch or update within a few days? Nothing like downtime throughout the Point of Sale system to get management attention.

Maybe the owners of such systems should be required to pay $10,000 (or MORE) to EACH person affected by such a breach? THAT will get their attention for sure!

That would certainly raise the visibility of the IT department from "simple overhead" to "risk avoidance".

By the way iMap, just once you might try Classic Shell (It's free at www.classicshell.net) and see what it does for even Windows 7 though it works great on all more recent versions of Windows and lets you make customizations that you will never be able to do without such a program.

That the "open access" is only to the abstract, not the entire article on Environmental Science & Technology. Still very interesting as it proves there are still far more variables yet to be found in the "warming" equation than the climate religionists would have you believe.

The "Great Smog" as you put it is the direct result of the Sulphur Oxides that used to spew from every chimney at home and business. That's typically what happens when you burn soft coal or bunker oil. It was the primary source of acid rain and smog. When hard coal and refined de-sulphurized fuel oil and gasoline became commonplace, much of our smog went away.

Funny thing though, due to emission regulations and a desire for greater efficiency, the resulting higher combustion temperatures and pressures in vehicles or boilers/furnaces is bringing up the amount of nitrogen oxides which also cause smog and acid rain.

Lewis Page has never advocated a return to smog as you accuse him of, he has only advocated a levelheaded examination of nuclear power since it is literally "emission free". (Other than the waste)

The fact is that the more recent developments (Thorium, Sodium) in Nuclear energy solve most of the problems the old technology faced. I do not see a "Pay for play" arrangement as you accuse.

It is illegal to rig emissions tests in 50 states in the USA. Volkswagen INTENTIONALLY broke the law not only in the USA but elsewhere AND they admitted that fact. BMW may be next, they apparently did something similar to VW from what I hear. How is that our doing?

If you want to comment about BP, THEIR sub contractors were working under direct BP supervision. Seems you might not want to have put in check valves in a configuration that doesn't meet the EPA standards that have been in place for years to avoid exactly what happened on that oil platform. Time to get rid of ALL Diesel and fuel oils.

The fact is that Diesel or fuel oil is dirty and always has been. Yes it has higher BTU/Gallon than gasoline but the amount of NOx produced is much higher than gasoline or other fuels. The particulates are out of this world and the "yahoos" around here that put vertical exhaust stacks on their pick up trucks and play hell with their Engine Control Software to get more HP, tend to spew a black cloud out of them anytime they step on the pedal.

I haven't seen that kind of soot coming from a personal vehicle for 40 years and it ONLY comes from Diesels. Even buses and garbage trucks aren't as bad as these pick up trucks.

The NOx is intolerable and smells like high concentration nitric acid. It acts like it too. Try driving behind one of those every day on the way to work.

Convert all Diesels to natural gas or propane worldwide and we'll all be better for it. Don't even get me started on the converted fry oil Biodiesel. If I wanted to smell fried food I'd buy some. You might even finally have some sunshine peeking through in Beijing. Asthma rates would plummet everywhere.

Ooops, I forgot, developing countries don't care about their OWN emissions, only those of developed nations so they keep their cost advantage against them.

In the US, any engine system designated as a "PZEV" (partial zero emissions vehicle) has to warranty all components that are required to meet that standard for the "life" of the vehicle including the catalytic convertor. Not sure about diesels, but YMMV according to engine size, fuel, locality etc. New York (where I live) and California both have the most stringent stateside emissions regulations in the US.

My Ford Fusion (with a four cylinder gasoline engine) has a small high pressure fan that acts like a turbocharger to improve it's emissions. It runs all the time the engine is on. It failed after only 5 years and I found this PZEV fact out shortly after. The dealer tried to say it was not covered until I told them about the PZEV rules. ONLY the four cylinder engine is covered as it is the only one that meets PZEV criteria.

Saved myself $700 and stuck it to the dealer. It was a good day!

Regarding EGR valves, on a gasoline engine these should only be $35 to $50.

Actually, it's based on real science, not a "model". A hypothesis was offered by Newton that a group of equations (the laws of motion, as you state) could accurately predict the movement of celestial objects. when that was found to be correct (by actual testing and physical observation with telescopes and sextants), it went from the realm of hypothesis to scientific fact.

The more complex you make an OS, the more likely it is that one of the contributors will screw up something. The fact is that the ONLY REASON why China has been successful in having such a "One Child " policy is that it is effectively a Dictatorship and that "Benevolence" doesn't enter in to the equation.

We have a similar issue in the States with multi generation welfare clients having more children just to get more welfare benefits. It is difficult to actually limit the number of children one is allowed to have, but it is not difficult (Only politically unwise) to limit the amount of welfare money being paid per child.

Same goes for "immigration". Who is going to pay for the upkeep of wave after wave of immigrants; since they did not come here legally with a sponsor and a job?

The left uses these issues as a wedge and a vote buying tactic. From now on, the money to pay for these concepts should only come from registered Democrats pockets. That will fix the problem.

All "minorities" are playing that game and it is detrimental to the company, it's existing employees and the applicants.

I will say it again, HR should be "Blind"....resumes should be sanitized of all information besides their qualifications and education. All decisions to hire should be based on that criteria alone and no one in the company should divulge the name, sex, age, religion, or race of the applicants until the final interview. Testing to prove competence should be required and will go a long way towards prevention of spurious discrimination lawsuits.

There should NEVER be any hiring quota used as that is deliberate discrimination and is usually to overcompensate in the opposite direction.

We need to bring back the idea of a "meritocracy" and consider that while there may well be as many women or other "minorities" as there are men, the number of interested and qualified applicants NEVER matches the percentage of the overall population. Thus that % number is meaningless and is used incorrectly in "diversity" calculations.

The real decision should be based on are you qualified and do you want the position. Why is that so difficult to understand?

Have you EVER been in Northern Canada?

As a young man, my family camped many times in several parks up in Northern Canada and the Adirondack Mountains in New York during our vacations.

The mosquitos and black flies would carry you off and you had to wear netting and bug repellent or you would go mad trying to fight them off. There were literal clouds of insects.

However, they only bothered the moose and deer intermittently. Seems having a thick coat of hair everywhere (unlike most humans) meant that only their softer bits were targeted. However, deer ticks pose a much greater problem for disease and between me and you, I would rather be eaten by mosquitos than ticks.

There other bloodsuckers to consider too. You can't enter a pond or stream in the North Country that is not full of leeches. Better wear tight swim trunks or suffer some embarrassing leech removals. You quickly find out who your friends are at Scout camp (Northern Lights). Everybody went skinny dipping ONCE there, then suddenly found modesty through practicality.

Those deer flies bite like that pinch your mother would give you when you acted up in church. Some of them are as big as an inch long and they sound like a model airplane engine sometimes.

All said and done, there is little difference other than size between deer and reindeer/caribou. The bugs find all mammals tasty and this has been going on since there have been blood sucking insects. I have seen many deer calmly grazing in a field and they are just covered in the little bastards.

Funny how those bloodsuckers presence hasn't resulted in any extinctions regardless of what's being "reported".

My experience has shown me that automation like CNC is a double edged sword. (Computer Numerical Control) CNC has been around since the paper tape days but is almost universal in most machine rooms these days.

On one hand, CNC allows you to make large production runs of complicated items very quickly.

On the other hand, those who have ONLY used CNC machining equipment become very dependent on it and soon lose their ability to easily hand make "One Off" items because no one puts a program together for just one piece.

Thus my ex wife is back to work as a tool and die maker, well after she retired; as there aren't many with her manual skills.

I ask you, is the CNC system itself "robotic" or does it create "Human Robots"?

Yes, there is a type of pine that grows incredibly slowly since it lives in the high mountains where it hardly gets any rain or water. Try getting a good correlation between rainfall/snowpack occurring in a place where it is naturally so dry that mummification occurs and you'll come up with exactly the same conclusions IF you are trying prove there is a drought in the desert. You can take some coal to Newcastle if you'd like too.

Completely missed in all of their eco-glory was the fact that if they wanted to do something beyond crying real crocodile tears and wearing sackcloth and ashes, they could start building de-salinization plants in California and solve the water problem instead of complaining about it.

Amendment XIV

Section 1.

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. Section 3.

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

Section 4.

The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any state shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.

Section 5.

The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

WTF is anyone using the Internet as a babysitter for your kids? Are we back to the "plop them down in front of the screen" mode? Didn't work well with the TV and the Internet can be far worse.

If you do, your parenting skills are sorely lacking and your hypocrisy is showing.

It's one thing to let children use the Net while you are able to supervise and assist but allowing them to sign up for various services unattended/unadvised is just ridiculous for the under 13 crowd.

Past that point, they certainly should understand a parent who patiently explains what info to provide, to whom and why and then they can probably browse unattended, but you should still be monitoring their browsing.

Take a second to read below since you obviously don't have any grasp of the US Constitution.

First Amendment - Religion and Expression. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Nowhere in that paragraph does it say that "Mr. High and Mighty" has any right to tell us what to say or what is "acceptable" free speech. If his pets at "Black Lies Matter" can publicly advocate the killing of police officers like the several murdered in cold blood over the last two weeks, then his detractors can say anything they want.

What part of "Congress shall make no law", "Free Exercise" or "Abridging the freedom of speech" do you not comprehend?

They are unwilling to understand that many unpopular opinions that people espouse today are not illegal in this country. The problem is that if you don't have the codec in the OS, you can't play the video.

MS operating systems run far too many video management systems and security systems to not have that capability baked in to the OS. Let alone the punters on Youtube.

They can always change codecs later after the new standard, but they have to support the old one until then or they break compatibility.

Motorized craft do not have to yield to sail powered craft if the motorized craft is larger.

It is the other way around. Lighter craft are more maneuverable thus they have to get out of the way of the heavier/larger craft

An automobile driver pays for roads with the taxes on gasoline, the taxes on his /her vehicle, the registration fees, the insurance etc. This list is ENDLESS.

These fees and taxes are effectively a "Use Tax". Don't give me the malarkey that "Bicycles don't damage roads". That's common knowledge. What cyclists do is use the roads and thus they should pay to do so whether they have a car or NOT.

WHY NOT CHARGE CYCLISTS WITH REGISTERING, LISCENCING, TESTING AND INSURANCE JUST LIKE AUTOMOBILE DRIVERS ARE?
