PEAK iPHONE? Apple mobe growth slumps to ‘lowest in its history’

Dan Paul

Let's hope someone ELSE will make a 'Droid hardware compatible OS

Here is hoping that somebody like Cyanogen will modify Android to remove all the nasty Google phone home bits and blackhole all the uneeded App communications permissions leaving us with an "open" OS that works and does not suck up data or batteries and is safe and secure. I would GLADLY pay $100 for that privilige especially if it included the best part of Palm Pilot contact management software so I don't have to rely on the "Cloud" and sync contacts and emails direct from my PC and still be able to use standard Android apps.

ALL Current Cell Phone Service Providers, Hardware & Software Manufacturers are Greedy Pfucks.

This needs to change and the solution could be crowdsourced rather easily.

Guess who PC-slaying tablets are killing next? Keyboard biz Logitech

Dan Paul

Logitech are way better than most on the market and shine in some categories

I have several Logitech products, two K750 wireless solar keyboards, an Anywhere Mouse MX "Darkfield mouse, and a K400 Wireless keyboard with touchpad.

All of them work well albeit the K750 keys take some getting used to, the K400 is perfect for my media PC and works well over 30 ft from the computer and nobody offers such a convenient keyboard/touchpad combo. The MX mouse is great as it works on ANY surface VERY well and battery life is not as bad as many have made out. I don't turn it off and use it every day at work and the batteries last 3 over months. I have never replaced batteries in the K400 since I bought it 6 months ago and yes it could have been better made but it only cost $24 at Walmart and it works fine for what I need it for.

I have never broken any Logitech product yet either. In my experience Microsoft products have invariably sucked, particularly their mice.

It seems so easy to complain about everything on ElReg. Let's see some commentards tell us what the like or recommend instead.

Climate-cooling effect 'stronger than volcanoes' is looking solid

What about natural causes of Nitrogen Oxides? Plant Decay anyone?

During the sping and summer, air separation & liquifaction plants have a difficult time purifying out the excessive nitrogen oxides that naturally occur due to the decay of vegetation. That "Spring like " smell is often from the products of decomposition.

Same thing applies to CO2 and methane produced from biological activity in the ground, manure, other waste and water. (not all natural but most is)

If the truth could ever be told in this discussion, the non manmade sources of greenhouse gases are so numerous and voluminous as to boggle the mind and in almost every discussion or climate model are entirely discounted by those who continue to deny logic and reason and blame mankind.

I do not deny that we contribute pollutants but we are insignificant compared to nature.

Win8 drivers affecting Win7?

Dan Paul

Re: Win8 drivers affecting Win7?

Neil,

Try looking at "Problems with Tap to click" in your searches. perhaps the laptop is confused by having Windows 8 Hardware and running Windows 7. Just had something similar happen using a new Windows 8 compatible Logitech wireless keyboard with built in touchpad (for my media pc). It just did not want to click, it preffered to "tap". A driver update for the keyboard helped.

On the other hand you may have to delete and reinstall the drivers with a full reboot in between.

Re: All men have the right to Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness (this is not it!)

If there was ever a reason to use the rights endowed in the Second Amendment (and the Jeffersonian interpretation of WHY the Second Amendment exists IE to allow the people to overthrow an unjust and tyrannical government), then now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country.... I have not forgotten the rights and obligations of citizenship.

All men have the right to Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness (this is not it!)

When are politicians ever going to understand that these uneccessary laws only serve to further trample the freedoms proscibed in the US Constitution that even protect the damned politicians?

Do you think they will squawk when the NSA/CIA/FBI/ETC starts bugging their offices (and emails now) just like Nixon and J Edgar Hoover did to their opponents?

NO LAWS (OR SECURITY THEATER) WILL EVER HELP STOP THE CONCERTED EFFORTS OF A TRUE TERRORIST!

This putrid crap is the brainchild of alphabet soup agencies that only continue to exist if they lie to the American People about how effective they are.

Only the really dumb or mentally deficient terrorists ever get caught and in the meantime, we lose a bit of our freedoms every day. Don't say you weren't warned, if you fail to speak up it's your fault.

Mark my words....Soon, there will be nothing left to lose and it will be too late to do anything about it.

German watchdog whacks Google with PIDDLING FINE over Street View slurp

Dan Paul
Devil

Re: our data ( is not ours and hasn't been for a long time)

First, there are almost no successful class action suits in the USA, AND if you used Google for any reason, you already gave away all your rights just by using their "services, products etc". In that case, Google could argue that there was no legal infraction as the individual uses Gmail or Android and had to allow them access to their personal data.

This is true here in the USA and in the EU. So they "slurped" your data.... I rather have Google do that than someone wardriving my neighborhood.

Re: German Watchdog Whacks Google

I completely agree, upvote you and while we are at it; what about the credit rating agencies (Equifax, Experian, Transunion Etc) who have way more influence on our daily lives, have EVERY POSSIBLE piece of data available on you and are COMPLETLY UNREGULATED!

No more computers in MY Car please! Time to buy 1960's circa Autos!

It's bad enough to have the manufacturers computer controls for powertrain & emissions, let alone another or replacement computer.

I will predict now that the manufacturer T's & C's will allow them to sell so called "anonymized data" to the State, Insurance Companies, Ad Agencies, for position, mileage, speed, acceleration, all of which will be used against you in violation of your 5th Amendment Rights against self incrimination to cost you more for everything automobile related. The car won't run without the computer and you will be prevented from modifying it legally. Don't you know it's a "privilige" to drive?

The alphabet soup agencies will be granted back door rights to enable them to communicate directly with the computer to open up eavesdropping, remote engine enable/disable, control of brakes, gas pedal and transmission, etc, etc, etc.

Soon, we will see the advent of "direct ticketing" like in "5th Element" where Bruce Willis character gets points on his liscense automatically, completely bypassing right to trial by jury or even by judge.

This is all in an effort to remove any remaining reason to have "drivers", including the enjoyment of driving.

Re: We need another war

Hey, D. A. M. lets take everything to wild extremes instead of using some modicum of rational thought. Typical liberal dipwad thinking ONLY with your heartstrings instead of your brain.

The fact remains that the entire world economy came out of the Great Depression due to WWII and nothing else. Ask anyone over 56 or those in their 80's while they are still here to learn from.

The "Boom Years" that followed in the 50's and 60's are what gave you the standard of living we have enjoyed for 40 years. They could not have occurred if WWII or resulting Cold War did not happen.

Dan Paul
Devil

War helps create new technology so did the "Space Race" and "Cold War"

SirDigalot, I have to agree but it hasn't always been during an attempt to kill people, more like during the periods when we "think" about how to kill people.

The space race also created a lot of new commercial technology. Velcro, mylar, electronics, etc.

We can thank war for many advancements in material science, plastics, metal alloys, etc, also the entire development of commerical air travel is based on military cargo and troop transport planes that were later redesigned for airlines.

Since they did not have computers then, the design of wings and structures was a crap shoot and the time tested designs from WWII went straight to producing McDonnell Douglas and other commercial airliners

While we are using SciFi as a basis of design, sounds farfetched but what we REALLY need today is an "Independence Day" style common enemy then we will stop thinking about individual countries and start acting in the best interests of all of humanity. Only then will we be able to rise out of the muck and mire and become a truly advanced species.

FTC needs a clue - ALL Telcos are lying thieves and need a swift ball rearrangement

If Cyanogen can put out a mod for damn near every Android device on the market, the Telco's can update their phones software/firmware every month.

While we are at it FTC, make them take off all the damn bloatware and telco specific crap. THOSE are the only reasons why they don't push regular updates out to their phones (of any OS make) because they deliberately screw up the stock Android software.

There are NO VIABLE HARDWARE RELATED REASONS!

Re: Time to just say "Piss Off"

Because I still don't see where the value is relative to what I pay in overall taxes. I pay about 40% for overall income tax not counting the 9% sales tax on everything I buy and all the other taxes that are cumulative.

If government was treated as a "business' they would not be in the mess they are in now and I would likely have a choice to use someone else that did not steal quite so much of my money every week.

So for taxes that are literally half or more of what I make, I GET bupkus from the government, until I retire, if I am lucky enough to live that long. But then, my "Social Insecurity" payments will be taxed (on money they already taxed).

I make too much money to qualify for the social programs 55% of the populace is getting today. When I do finally qualify (practically on my deathbed), those programs won't be funded any longer.

I should be able to claim at least 100 dependents as that's what these welfare cases and government civil servants are, my "dependents". They sit on their ass while I work mine off.

Dan Paul
Devil

Time to just say "Piss Off"

Here in Western NY State we pay roughly 70 cents per gallon for state tax alone. Obviously, we have a better deal than you in Europe & GB as a gallon is about $3.89 for midgrade.

Just a thought but perhaps people across the whole world needs to tell their government to "Piss Off".

In almost every other situation, we receive something of value in return for the money that we spend.

Hate to overstate the obvious, but that does not appear to be true with taxes.

Honestly ask yourself, why should governments be treated any different than any business?

I'll bet that has become a significant part of the market since it has become so easy to do, costs so much less and you get a MUCH better product than a PC manufacturer will provide.

This would be especially true during this recession.

Oh, Eadon, not everyone wants to struggle with a Linux distribution. I dislike Windows 8 but it will become a better product when the "Second Edition" is released.

Even now, the use of Classic Shell fixes almost all of the objectionable issues.

German boffins aim to burn natural gas - WITHOUT CO2 emissions

Dan Paul
Devil

Does anyone recognize that you can CONDENSE water vapor????

I have a condensing high efficiency 93% gas furnace and there is no place to pipe the water except the laundry sink, where it is pumped to the sewer, thus I can see and track how much water it produces.

In the span of 4-5 days this winter, that furnace produces about 30 gallons of rather pure water.

BTW, this hydrogen reformer concept is not new, only the liquid metal version. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe that the Germans used hydrogen reformer technology in the process to make artificial fuel oil from coal at Ploesti.

As others have pointed out, heat recovery through heat exchangers is another tool to reduce energy input in the manufacturing process. The heat released during condensation can be used to heat homes or other facilities.

The technology is not entirely useless as it points out other ways to convert methane into heat energy that lessen the impact of the resulting CO2.

It will NOT be efficient to use Hydrogen or this technology for any transportation fuel but could be used in electric generation where some economy of scale would be possible.

There are also catalytic methods of combustion that can break methane into it's components. More importantly. flare gas from refineries or landfills is often just burned without use of it's heat value and both reformer and catalytic technologies could safely and efficiently reduce emissions while providing useful work energy from waste gas or fluids.

US Air Force reclassifies 6 cyber tools as weapons

Dan Paul
Devil

Re: Air force ... cyber-weapons ... huh?

Just so you know, the USAF has all satellites (Defense or Commercial) under it's jurisdiction (and the tools to void their warranties). It also is responsible for anything outside orbit. This all dates back to the 1950's when the NASA and the Space program began as all that technology came from captured Germans in WWII and they all got assigned to the USAAF (Army Air Force) for security purposes.

Yes, the Airforce is a useful entity for bringing home pork but specifically for high technology pork, the very best kind.

See the whole computer thing also followed the NORAD DEW line radar, ballistic missle trajectory predictions, etc etc. Thems that already have the computers seems to get even more.

And by the way my dad was in the US Army Air Corp and was heavily involved in almost every ICBM booster project during the late Cold war, even met Werner Von Braun. We ate a lot of Pork in those days.

Re: Quick - use the second amendment....

I know you are just trolling but I'll buy lunch today.

I would argue that if it is defined as a weapon by the Federal Government, it is considered "arms".

There are a number of arguments from back around the first Congress that defined the Bill of Rights and the Constitution as to what was considered "arms" and they were talking about making the definition more concise but gave up on the idea as they wanted a "loose" definition that was somewhat future proof.

The term "arms" technically included rifles, cannon, pistols and swords as it refers to common armament available at the time.

I only wish they had done a better job and spelled that all out in detail.

Frankly, i want my own field cannon. There are some prickish downvoters I would like to return fire on.

Dan Paul
Devil

It's not the Degree, it's how you apply it and what knowledge you gain by application

Way back in the 70's, I went to NCCC in Niagara County for two years, then found a GF, got married and started a family. Then I lost my job working at a General Motors plant and ended up going back to NCCC and finishing my Mechanical technology associates degree.

It took two more years to find gainful employment as a Sales Engineer for a Control Valve company and was the best move I ever made. The training I got in school only gave me the ability to find what I needed and build on it myself.

I believe THAT is what's lacking today, the ambition and willingness to learn new capabilities and teachers that want their students to understand how learn on theiir own. Currently, they don't teach that in school, they simply teach how to regurgitate what you have been ""taught". That is not learning.

Many people should not waste their time going to college as they are not suited for that type of environment and factory work woulld be the best investment for them.

Agreed,... Kill all the Accountants then go for the Lawyers and Politicians

Seems the ban counters know everything these days. Unfortunately that goes for the whole Political sector as well.

Here's an idea. Only people who "Can Do" get to make the rules. Those who "Can't" or "Don't know how" have to live by them and get no vote.

The sad state of of the communication infrastructure is the result of lobbyists, graft, greed etc.

In NY State, the NYS Public "Disservice" Commission refuses to force Verizon to live up to it's agreement (Tarrif) to repair the existing telephone wiring that they have been getting a line maintenenace fee of roughly $60 USD per year from every subcriber in the state since they were Ma Bell.

My contention is that only the state and federal government should own all infrastructure and contractually be able to toss out any company that does not live up to the terms of the tarrif to operate, maintain and extend the networks.

Re: No one escapes the EU Inquisition...... @ Dan Paul

Intractable Potsherd, I will be the judge of what I say or do thank you, not some arrogant pedantic piece of cracked pottery (or "Crackpot").

Obviously our opinions differ as I strongly believe that the EU is unfairly anti-competitive against US based companies while you believe that they walk on water and fart roses.

The only way to fairly level the playing field, is to unify ALL your laws and regulations across ALL EU "States" which is why I commented about "Federal Law" (the rough equivalent of EU law) being the basis of all "state" law. When did I misunderstand the difference between EU directives and regulations? Who the fuck cares? You can't come together and agree on one set of rules to do business by. We already have, from the beginning (even though most of our current "leaders" are as ineffectual and lame as yours are).

Yes, we have state laws but thier basis is common across our Nation, unlike the EU.

All I called to attention was the baldfaced obvious legal bias against Google and Microsoft simply because they are American. IE the Inquisition...

No one read the comment about Phorm/BT/ISP's/Telco's doing the same things as Google and the unequal privacy regulation issues? NOOOOO, just typical bias here, damned 'merkin doesn't know what he's talking about.

In my opinion, Socialism is when government (EU or USA makes no difference) decides it has the authority to take all the money from those who made it (Germany) and give it to those who don't deserve to have it (Cyprus, Greece, Italy). This is perpetuated by arrogant Belgian and French twats and those who keep them in power.

Dan Paul
Devil

No one escapes the EU Inquisition......

When is the EU going to consolidate all of the laws of the various nation states into one document that companies wishing to do business there might understand and be able to comply with? Isn't that one of the things they are actually supposed to do?

Oh, that would be NEVER. That's because the EU doesn't actually have any real benefit except for those who run it. Seems to be a country club for psychotic socialist control freaks more than anything else.

So your anti-competetive regulatory body is under the EU but all the laws regarding data privacy have to be from individual countries? That's a DELIBERATE formula for unintended non-compliance, one being used to attack us based companies in particular.

What ever happened to the PHORM inquiry? What about all the European ISP's /Telco's/multitude of software manufacturers/governments that currently do exactly the same thing the EU accuses of Google?

EU Law seems to need some serious consolidation, as it appears to me that the EU just picks and chooses which laws/rules apply to American Corporations while ignoring any home grown company.

Selective prosecution is illegal EVERYWHERE. But there is no justice for American Corporations in the EU and never will be.

We have an interesting concept here in the US. It's called Federal Law and the States are not supposed to make individual law that duplicates or supersedes existing Federal law. That way we only have one primary set of regulations that need to be complied with.

The Code of Federal Registry may be confusing but it covers the whole country and is at least uniform. Now I can't argue the fact that some states like NY and CA try to rewrite Federal law in contradiction of the Constitution, but for the most part the general basis of law is common from location to location.

Get ONE GOOD LAWYER (hard enough to do in it's own right) and you can probably come up with something that complies with everything except NY & CA.

The EU seems to be a moving target however. and given how litigious they are, a completely unfair one.

The matter at hand is one of ethics and principles. The FBI is supposed to uphold the law of this land and they (and every politician in this country) take an oath swearing on a Bible to "Protect and Defend the Constitution" of the United States.

Use of the Military (and it's technology) against the People is also against the Constitution and can only be done in the case of "Martial Law" where our rights are suspended for our "own good". Better that it come from some faceless virus than actual bombing missions. The Iranian government does not listen to reason and neither does North Korea.

Israel has been ready send in the bombers for a long time and we have stayed their hand repeatedly.

Do the math... Iran plus Israel equals World War Three. Suddenly, the whole middle east is on fire at the same moment and there will not be time for the niceties of computer combat or rules of engagement.

The Russians will jump in, then US and NATO, then we can write off the Middle East for say 10,000 years, along with the remnants of the World Economy. For fun, let's just add North Korea into the mix. Now China will want to support the North Koreans and there goes the whole planet.

Re: Google.. Just say FU to the EU and Buyone

No because according to what I see; everytime some EU panty waist politician doesn't get his "pound of flesh", Kow-Tow, genuflection, ring or ass kissing from an American company, the EU arbitrarily and capriciously "fine" (TAX) the American company for "anti-competitive behaviour" even though nothing of the kind EVER actually happened.

For the EU court, (just like the Nazi's) it seems that simple accusation is the same as incontrovertable proof.

In my experience, there are no end of accusers in the EU and this is how they compete against each other, the run to Nanny Union and whine.

Google.. Just say FU to the EU and Buyone

Again, the Nazi anti-capitalists of the EU Brussels Cartel want to hobble American Enterprise.

As I said about the Microsoft Browser fines, Google please grow a pair and tell the EU to F Off.

The Brussels Rule:

No company based in America may do business in the EU without being fined for being a Monopoly (having a better product). We will just fine the tar out of them since we cannot tax them.

Re: Be happy, and enjoy your viewing!

Jon,

You beat me to the Orwell reference, One + for that!

Is it just me or is more and more of daily life (everywhere) imitating Orwell, Monte Python or other dystopian media/literature?

Doesn't that poster for "Telehappiness.co.uk" for instance look a bit like the Laughing Man logo from "Ghost in the Shell" anime?

Better check out that website if you want even more outrage, the whole thing looks like a "tile inspired" interface we all know and love.

If I lived in the UK I'd gladly go without TV. Seems that paying that tax results in more of this mentally and emotionally retarded nonsense. Thoughtcrime is alive and well in the UK.

Elon Musk's 'Grasshopper' hover rocket scores another test success

Great work, similar to the LEM but better with automatic control

The Lunar Excursion Module did a similar landing during the Apollo Moon missions. The first Lunar landing was a problem because the surface of the original landing site was full of boulders about the size of cars and the crew had to go to manual control and change direction to somewhere flatter.

The problem then was that the main engine was not at all designed for vectoring, they had to use the attitude jets (little cross shaped things all over the LEM) for directional control and modulate the main engine to allow a gentle descent or ascent. Thank god they had the sense to use a (somewhat) modulating engine or they would a different kind of history.

Landing the LEM in full manual with an untested engine was truly a scary feat of flying.

This Grasshopper is just like those old SF movie landings with a full rocket landing vertical (Destination Moon). Let's see them do it in a 25 mph breeze now. That will be the real test of the automated control system.

Did you look at the link I included to Apples own website where they say exactly that?

I thought not.

Eight Cores = Ability to actually multi-task

Hasn't one big complaint about smartphones in general been that you can't talk , use the GPS and check email at the same time?

Seems to me that 8 cores would probably help to solve that problem.

To my understanding, Apple believes that "multi-tasking" does not involve doing many things at once but means that you can "resume" working with the second application when you are done with the first. Also, the only ones that will run concurrently appear to be Apples own apps, NOT 3rd party apps and then all bets are off.

To me Apple's "multi-tasking" is simply switching between apps. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4211

People really want multi-tasking like on your PC. On my Windows 7 machine (Core i5 3570 and 32 Gig Ram), I can have Word, Excel, Outlook, open and be defragging while editing a 20 meg spreadsheet file AND listening to Pandora. That's my idea of multi-tasking.

I believe Android will be the ones that really offer something close to a PC experience from multi-tasking, speed, software availability and features. Not immediately but eventually they will take the lead.

Eye tracking though not showing an immediate benefit in the few days we have heard of the feature, DOES INDEED have some possibility for helping the handicapped communicate and use a phone interface better.

Lets see what Stephen Hawking says before we condemn a brand new user interface tool.

Japan to trial emergency 'calls' by Twitter in disaster zones

How about sending notifications in the other direction? (Makes more sense)

It makes a lot more sense to me that any emergency declaration/notification be sent to the public via text message, Twatter, & Farcebook than to use the "Emergency Broadcast System" on TV or Radio (A cold war throwback from the "duck and cover" days of my youth)

Unfortunately, this generation will continue to text away as the tsunami rolls them into human mush.

The fact still remains that TV and Radio over the air broadcasts are more likely to be operating in an big emergency than any overall phone or IT communication backbone.

Most TV & Radio broadcast transmitters are located at the antenna (usually out in the boonies) and have generator power available.

A few hundred watts will go a LONG way on radio. I assume the same for TV.

Cable, Internet or telephone relies on various fiber/copper backbones so there are a lot of potential points of failure.

Civilized Provider Agreements

We have the same thing happen in the Village of Lewiston, NY where Canadian cell tower signals often override our own.

A simple call to the Service Provider making them aware usually resolves the issue. In most cases for our area, Verizon frequently denies the roaming charges based on the home location of the subscriber. Canada is only 1/2 mile away and there is a 20 mile stretch of the Niagara River in contention where boaters all want to have the cell phones working.

Apparently if both sides do the same then it all evens out in the end. It seems that radio signals know no boundaries, go figure. Somehow I think that it would be too easy to just use the phone and cell tower ID to correctly bill the user. Once you go futher inland all bets are off.

Probably alot easier to deny that you have not been to France than to say you have not been to Canada.

Re: quietly started using North American components where he could

What I am stating is that certain morons should just stop with the automatic american bashing. Ribosomes post did not have one thing to do with "unions" . The fact is that the US CAN and does manufacture products with all of the quality and efficiency of other locations in the world. And they don't use child labor or make people work in literal prisons.

Ribosome did not have any point besides making a jab at the US. I was not comparing apples to anything, I was answering was a completely misguided and incorrect statement that needed correcting.

RE: Obviously

Perhaps the better decision should be that all politicians and bureaucrats should be ground up and used for fertiliser. The people don't need protection from just laws, they need protection from the bastards that twist the law for their own personal gain.

The only laws regarding software and data should be "Caveat Emptor". Let the buyer beware.
