The trouble is that ALL the wiring for phone is ancient in NY state except at new buildings where they built out with new cable (black plastic insulation). All the other existing phone wiring is covered in corroded gray lead, is full of water and electrical noise. So DSL is a crapshoot with Verizon, fiber was only selectively provisioned to new builds and areas where it was already available. The Verizon repair people are deliberately being told by management to not service old cabling unless they have no other option. The minute any fiber is delivered, they remove all POTS services and wiring but they are not even doing that much.
The NY State Public Dis-Service commission is no help as they are already bought off by the Telco's and providers. There is an existing line maintenance fee of about $5.00 per month that Verizon is still collecting and yet not providing proper maintenance.
The same problem applies to Time Warner as they have not improved their fiber backbones and the "last mile" is still Co-Axial cable, not fiber.
The Municipality/Township should own the last mile. It's obvious that no one else knows what they are doing.

While I rail against the intrusion of any government into my daily life, the agencies that were part of the New Deal (FDIC, SSA, FHA, SEC, WPA, CCC, CAA, FCC etc) were way more important and thought out than what has been offered by Obama. His solutions only cover part of our "stupid" population while FDR's and to lesser extent Eisenhowers policies covered the whole population, especially Social Security and did it with some dignity. If it had not been for SSA, too many would be homeless even today. Some federal social safety nets are required. The states could not have done this equitably.
I agree with some of your arguement as the issue of Constitutionality of many of FDR's executive actions is questionable to say the least. But unlike today, FDR had justifiable reasons to do what he did back then.
Obama has no such reason or "mandate". His actions, especially on immigration are a thinly veiled vote buying expedition, couched in lies, un-Constitutionally implemented.
One thing that was missed was that there was never an amendment that says that all elected leaders and Federal/State employees must have the same corresponding pay & benefits that are provided to the populace and nothing more. That would have made things more equal today as federal and state pensions grossly exceed what SSA provides and I pay MORE than federal and state employees did to THEIR pensions.
If nothing else, Obama and the whole group who developed Obamacare should be investigated for violating the Health Insurance Information Protection act (HIPPA) as it turns out that the various Federal websites are collecting and selling the personal data of the people who sign up for Obamacare and they needed written authorization to do anything that is against HIPPA regulations..

I'm a fellow Dinosaur and I don't agree with the concept of a connected car either. It had better be an option, just like the dongle that you can choose (so far) to have installed that rats you out to the insurance agency for high acceleration/deceleration. No one else has been successful in the unmanned, automated landing and recovery of the first stage of a rocket. Even the Lunar Excursion Module was completely manned and autopilot was overridden and a manual descent was undertaken on the first landing.
The very reason SpaceX tried this landing on a barge is due to the danger of such a landing for the first time out of the box.
Even a desert landing requires a fly over of inhabited land, something that SpaceX was CLEARLY trying to avoid here.
The shuttle landings were ALL at an airfield runway, whether in Florida or elsewhere and were mostly piloted. Only the XB-37 is unmanned. All were lifting bodies and they "flew", not "descended".
The Dragon 9 first stage vertical descent is unprecidented, thus the anticipation of a "50/50" landing. I would say it would be "ludicrous" to use anything else than a floating landing platform.
The mere fact that they were this close is nothing short of brilliant.
And I postulate that the eradication of mankind (or an appreciable number of them) would be a simple solution to the problem. If there is a fixed amount of money and an endless supply of humans to spend it, then curtailing the supply of humans is the least difficult solution to poverty and disease.
This is why we need a worldwide agreement on the use of artificial "intelligence".

I only buy second hand fleet cars with 24-30,000 miles on them and pay way less than half of "new".

CNG (compressed natural gas) is a better fuel cell solution and it's already available. It has far less safety issues than H2 and has roughly 4 times more energy per cubic foot than H2. It even works directly without fuel cells in existing vehicles with slight modifications to the intake. It is FAR cleaner than diesel or gasoline ever could be.
But it's NOT happening with $50 dollar per barrel oil prices.

This is why Toyota made these patents "Free" because they won't lose any money or market share while "appearing" to be munificent. By the time we have fusion electrical generation to make hydrogen cheap enough, none of their patents will be applicable anyway.
Praxair, a longtime producer of Hydrogen gas has a website that explains the safety issues with Hydrogen better than I can. All I can say is if you ever saw the plastic bag experiment with oxy acetylene, you would never think about using hydrogen gas as a portable fuel source

Hydrogen is not a method to store energy H4rmony and I never said it was, it is a gas that burns with an almost invisible flame and has no odor.
You continually offer the use of hydrogen as a "solution" to our energy needs, when it does not work. The only method of creating enough electricity, cheaply enough to make Hydrogen is Fusion and that isn't happening anytime soon and we would be better served to use the electricity directly if it were.
It leaks easily across even solid metal, especially the kind of metal tubing that would be used in any transportation device. It is the smallest atom in the table, so small that it penetrates metal seals and metals tanks right though the grain structure. Since you mention Hydrogen Embrittlement you should know that the only metals (Monel & Hastelloy) that help prevent it are daftly expensive, hard to machine, immpossible to weld and are jokingly called "unobtanium" by those who use it.
Now where would you store H2 in an auto? A tank in the trunk most likely. Let that tank sit in the sun in a Texas parking lot all day and climb in and start the car. Since H2 requires a Class 1 Div 1 Group B, electrical rating there will not be a car in the world that will meet the explosion proof rating for Hydrogen gas and only a few dozen transport truck that could do it. Go find insurance.
At room temperature, liquid hydrogen tanks must be vented or they will explode. Otherwise they must be refrigerated at an excessive energy cost and the liquifaction temperature is -423 F. Go find a chiller system to produce that temperature. You can't afford it or the energy costs.
The Hydrogen trucks you see leaving an Air Liquide, Praxair, or Linde gas liquifaction facility all have one thing in common, a trail of leaking gas. You do not want to light a cigarette around those trucks.
If you "break" the atomic bonds of water to make H2 and O (Electrolysis), the electrical energy it takes to do so, is enormous compared to the process of combustion. It takes more energy to produce Hydrogen than you can ever get in return.

They (Praxair) are the experts on the subject and I have only got 24 years of industry experience and training on the selection and use of equipment for just such a Hydrogen application as electrical turbines, reduction furnaces, the control valves that direct the H2 in a chemical or power plant, the tubing that is acceptable to transport the H2 from the storage tank, the pressure relief valves that prevent the h2 from blowing up the tanks, the regulators that control the gas pressure being delivered, the analyzers that check the gas for purity (CO or CO2 contamination at less than 1 PPM in pure H2 is a difficult measurement)

As Hydrogen is not the best choice, then the only alternative gas is CNG or LNG. Both are being used as fuel right now and are far cleaner and safer than hydrocarbon liquid fuels like gasoline or kerosene.

As far as penetrating projectiles go, those from a rail gun would be much faster than those from a chaingun. It does take longer to "charge" the weapon but have you ever seen what one can do? The projectile goes 5,000 miles per hour and ranges approaching 100 miles. (and 32 megajoules of energy at the muzzle) That's like being hit with an asteroid, not much can stop it.

BTW, mirrors or light guides as anti-laser "armour" are often ineffective. The "Star Wars" program from the Reagan era used spinning mirrors as part of the space based laser itself. They spun to increase wear life but had to be replaced very often as the first surface mirror material would vaporize after a few shots.

In order to do any real damage the ground based laser would have to emit infrared energy (think CO2 Laser) which would melt anything like a mirror in a few seconds or less without even having tar on it.

It would have to be a lot colder than Mars is or have a much higher atmospheric pressure than the gravity on Mars could create to have liquid methane or methane ice.

A real book helps to support jobs in many markets including more renumeration for the authors than the skinflints at Amazon or Apple want to pay.
With a real book; you have the the author, the publisher, the retailer, the ink and paper manufacturers, the binders and printers, the shippers, etc, etc.
Manufacturers need to stop looking at employees like they are overhead, just because any "savings" from creating electronic media versus print media only go towards the big corporations pockets.
Real jobs that pay real wages are a boost to the economy and even the employers, not a drain.
If everyone is on welfare, they can't buy your product and there would be an increase in corporate taxes to help pay for the welfare.
