New York State plots broadband future

Dan Paul

Re: Words, words, words $Tom 13

The other side of the state has been completely screwed over by Time Warner and Verizon. The upstate situation is worse than NYC.

However, you are right about NYC being corrupt. They do that sort of stuff just fine down there with no help from us.

Dan Paul

EVERY city's infrastructure is old

The trouble is that ALL the wiring for phone is ancient in NY state except at new buildings where they built out with new cable (black plastic insulation). All the other existing phone wiring is covered in corroded gray lead, is full of water and electrical noise. So DSL is a crapshoot with Verizon, fiber was only selectively provisioned to new builds and areas where it was already available. The Verizon repair people are deliberately being told by management to not service old cabling unless they have no other option. The minute any fiber is delivered, they remove all POTS services and wiring but they are not even doing that much.

The NY State Public Dis-Service commission is no help as they are already bought off by the Telco's and providers. There is an existing line maintenance fee of about $5.00 per month that Verizon is still collecting and yet not providing proper maintenance.

The same problem applies to Time Warner as they have not improved their fiber backbones and the "last mile" is still Co-Axial cable, not fiber.

The Municipality/Township should own the last mile. It's obvious that no one else knows what they are doing.

SCREW you, GLASSHOLES! Microsoft unveils HoloLens

Microsoft usually does..

hardware properly. Never had an issue with their mice, joysticks, keyboards besides their drivers are somewhat bloated and don't like to coexist with the competitors.

The Kinex product has fairly good reviews if not the Xbox. They even opened that up to other platforms.

Will it work for software like Dassault's or Autodesks? That's where it could really shine.

Obama makes net neutrality pledge in State of the Union

Dan Paul

Re: Obama never met a lie he didn't like. @Preston Munchensonton

The New Deal is immensely different than the Obamacare fiasco and his other foolish peccadillos. One took us OUT of the Great Depression and the other is about to put us back into one.

While I rail against the intrusion of any government into my daily life, the agencies that were part of the New Deal (FDIC, SSA, FHA, SEC, WPA, CCC, CAA, FCC etc) were way more important and thought out than what has been offered by Obama. His solutions only cover part of our "stupid" population while FDR's and to lesser extent Eisenhowers policies covered the whole population, especially Social Security and did it with some dignity. If it had not been for SSA, too many would be homeless even today. Some federal social safety nets are required. The states could not have done this equitably.

I agree with some of your arguement as the issue of Constitutionality of many of FDR's executive actions is questionable to say the least. But unlike today, FDR had justifiable reasons to do what he did back then.

Obama has no such reason or "mandate". His actions, especially on immigration are a thinly veiled vote buying expedition, couched in lies, un-Constitutionally implemented.

One thing that was missed was that there was never an amendment that says that all elected leaders and Federal/State employees must have the same corresponding pay & benefits that are provided to the populace and nothing more. That would have made things more equal today as federal and state pensions grossly exceed what SSA provides and I pay MORE than federal and state employees did to THEIR pensions.

If nothing else, Obama and the whole group who developed Obamacare should be investigated for violating the Health Insurance Information Protection act (HIPPA) as it turns out that the various Federal websites are collecting and selling the personal data of the people who sign up for Obamacare and they needed written authorization to do anything that is against HIPPA regulations..

Dan Paul

Re: Obama never met a lie he didn't like. @streaky

Are you out of your little mind? I have earned and paid for everything I have so I understand "basic" economics far better than this theif or you. He orders the Fed to print away any possible future for my children and grandchildren and doesn't even comprehend where that money comes from.

All he has done is crap on the very people who actually pay for the things he gives away.

It's complacent morons like yourself that "give up" your rights and income without complaining that are a huge part of the problem.

Obama, the leftist, lying, socialist terrorist sympathizer is the WORST thing that ever happened to this country. He's the one pandering to billionaires and selling our country to China.

Dan Paul

Obama never met a lie he didn't like.

Obama is a serial liar. He just can't help himself. What part of "There is no more money left" does he not understand? This "State of the Union" address is just more of the same empty promises.

Unfunded mandates like unfettered immigration of illegals that will only export MORE of the Mexican crime cartels to the US, stress an already woeful social support an education system and denigrate the extensive efforts of legal immigrants that went through the system.

He wants to make Community College free of charge, only for some, and specifically the poor. Isn't that a form of discrimination? What about his "help for the middle class"? Just another way to bilk us of any and all remaining income it appears.

What about those who EARNED AND SPENT THEIR OWN MONEY? No, their education and efforts will be diminished and diluted by the free riders that didn't care enough to learn to read back in high school. He is making a mockery of the community college system. No employer will hire a person with a two year degree soon. There goes any chance for the middle class as we have to pay for his moronic mistakes.

The existing education system cannot graduate even minimally competent people from city schools while lying about the results and needs a complete over haul but he wants to break something that works for the sole reason of "equality". Oh and to get more votes for the party candidate. Let's not even talk about the four year colleges as no one can afford that anymore. Even a doctor doesn't make enough money to pay back student loans.in a timely fashion these days.

Maybe the continued media glorification of the hip hop THUG life will result in some nice crackhouse jobs for these new "graduates".

All the while, he knows that NONE of this can be paid for without bankrupting this country. But that's seems to have been the plan all along because in some twisted way he is trying to finish the job that Bill Ayers and the Weather Underground started.

And you actually believe he is for Net Neutrality? Or only the part that funds his next career in

the telcos? We all know what a great job his administration did with Aaron Schwartz. Obama has no idea of what the internet is for beyond his wifes Netflix subscription and Wastebook account.

Dan Paul

Re: Congrats to Tim...@YAAC

Your continual "harrassment" by police likely had more to do with your criminal activity. Littering and Vandalism are still criminal "events" no matter how minor you want to make them seem.

The ones who had windows wanted to keep them; unbroken. You wanted to break them, that makes you a criminal. The police have every right to enforce the law, you do NOT have the right to resist arrest. If you resist arrest, expect that the police will make sure that you know how stupid that idea was. Peaceful protests are one thing but deliberate Arson, Looting, gunfire, major vandalism deserve all the punishment available for those criminals, including being shot dead.

By the way, look at all the "Militarization" (SWAT Teams, Fully Automatic Weapons, bullet proof vests, masks, helmets, armed personnel carriers) that is present all around Europe right now. Got any snide comments on that? Thought not. You are just anti-American like the rest of the cowardly bastards.

As long as the banks and investment companies exist, there will be economic criminal activity but there have been quite a few high profile arrests and incarcerations. Hopefully those will give some a reason to think twice. But there aren't any similar "broken windows" to tip off the regulatory agencies in the same way as you think.

Just WHY is the FBI so sure North Korea hacked Sony? NSA: *BLUSH*

Dan Paul

Re: Here is a clue...

Completely agreed, but do they ALL tell of their own exploits? In my suspicious mind, the best way to "out" the exploits WITHOUT reprisal is for them to show up in a film or novel. Then you could have complete deniability while still "jabbing" the enemy to egg him on. What I DO SEE on TV is only what they want us to see.

Re: LERN TWO PHUQUEING SPEL!! LOL @AC

Keef,

Thanks for the upvote, but you should note the very same reason why I don't use it is likely the same reason why you Brits do use "U". In my case, sadistic 1960's Catholic Nun's (the horror) and their yardsticks versus sadistic Headmasters and their switches. Spell check really has little to do with it (Who do you think you are, Canadian? Put your hand out. Swaaack!) I have the crooked knuckles to prove it. The only thing I am glad of from that period is a comprehension of why one should have some respect for "authoritay" as Cartman is known to say.

Dan Paul

Re: What is the problem he says will occur?

Wholeheartedly agree with your comment. I live in upstate New York, second only to Wisconsin in Dairy production and far more agricultural than down staters can ever comprehend. They'd fall over dead if they ever smelled our DairyAir and they can all kiss mine.

The algae bloom issue in the Great Lakes is more related to (pardon the pun) piss poor sewage treatment and too many users than agricultural run off. Our farmers are pretty stingy with excess nutrients because they PAY for them. Those down staters have the audacity to come into our "right to farm" communities and complain about the smell when the "honey" trucks are out spreading organic fertilizer. They don't know a damn thing except they buy any overpriced stuff from "Whole Foods" just for the name. Organic my ass!

Those same "Chicken Littles" have been whining for the past 50 years that I would be dead or starving in ten years, fisrt because of global cooling, then warming, now this.

Re: There is plenty of both.... we just have to get over the..

So the UK is all you worry about? It's (nightsoil) not very commonly used in the US or Canada where much more land has agricultural designation and chemical fertilizer usage is far more prevalent than the UK will ever be.

Dan Paul

Re: Even if true, addressing individual symptoms is not going to work.

You say nothing about the MENTAL health of people living in that close proximity to each other.

Personal space requirements are wildy underestimated and putting people into Mega Cities will be the death of humanity and culture. Many novels, short stories and movies have investigated this scenario and none of them were anything but a failure.

Behavioral scientist BF Skinner crammed rats into just such an overcrowded "warren" and they ate each other. I say that is happening right now but with less direct forms of cannabalism.

We need to realize that we can't support everyone, they have to do it themselves. Without various forms of "pressure" working against humanity there can be no growth or innovation. People can't just sit passively like sheep or cattle and be "taken care of" by the Nanny State. It is just not viable.

I am less worried by the "developing nations" capabilities than those of the Nanny State society. If western nations collapse, many developing nations will still have the knowledge and gumption to stay alive through subsistence farming. Not so of the west, which is why there are now so many "preppers" preparing for the inevitable collapse of society.

Dan Paul

There is plenty of both.... we just have to get over the..

taboo's of using "Nightsoil". Obviously, with this many people on Earth, there is no end of fecal matter available. The proper handling of which renders it quite safe if it does not get contaminated by industrial waste.

Instead of sending it through the sewer system into the lakes and rivers, it needs to get sprayed on the fields along with the animal manure. Rain runoff can be minimized by proper tilling of the land with an eye to the direction of the furrows.

Voila, ALL the NATURAL ORGANIC fertilizer one could ever want and Dupont and Monsanto (or other chemical companies) aren't involved. No anhydrous ammonia, no phosphate mining.

The real issue is that these alarmists would really rather see humanity in the dark and cold, wearing hairshirts and shoeless. If overpopulation and climate is as much a threat as they say then we really need to have a plan to leave earth. The poor aren't going to stop breeding more mouths to feed, the rich aren't even replacing themselves these days and the middle class pays for it all so they can't afford more kids.

BMW: ADMEN have asked us for YOUR connected car DATA

Dan Paul

It had better be optional...@nematoad have an upvote!

I'm a fellow Dinosaur and I don't agree with the concept of a connected car either. It had better be an option, just like the dongle that you can choose (so far) to have installed that rats you out to the insurance agency for high acceleration/deceleration. The insurance agency is only the tip of the iceberg, what about the state or federal governments, the banks, manufacturers etc? They could all make your life pretty miserable if they wanted to. Besides tracking your movements, they can disable the vehicle anytime they want. I will not buy a car with OnStar or any other similar system. I am already "connected" as much as I care to be.

The other problem is that the more complex the manufacturers make their products, the more that will go wrong with them. They DON"T care because it raises profits for the dealer and the manufacturers.

I grow wistful for that old '59 Ford Fairlane with the six cylinder I had years ago that had enough room under the hood to smuggle 5 people into the drive in (let alone the trunk). It was easy to fix because it was easy to understand and you did not need to drop the engine to change the plugs or the headlight bulbs because they left ROOM to work on it. Almost like the engineers knew what they were doing back then.

Bacon-smoking locals provoke noxious Chinese smog

Dan Paul

Diesel and Coal are...

the REAL reasons why smog is an issue in China.

Pork smoking would be a poor reason. They could fix much of the left over smoke with nothing more than an "afterburner" that simply re-burns the output of the smoker. Some chimney draft control would help a lot as well. Friction smokers don't need any chimney draft to the outdoors and are being used in many applications in the states for smoking foodstuffs

But even that minimal control will never happen in China as they don't use emission controls properly on anything. The diesel fuel is high sulphur and so is the coal so cars, homes and Industry just continue to put out the worst smog possible. Any "controls" that can be defeated, already have been. If you have seen the pictures, it looks like the "killer" smogs of the late 1800 in England.

Re: Is it just me @Lost in Clouds of Crack Smoke

Really, it is just you, lost in a cloud of Crack Smoke...

If you think that fully automatic rifles/pistols are easily available in the USA, then pass the pipe because that's a more valid concern than your ill informed. mentally deficient opinions about guns. You have to get a Federal license for a true automatic (good luck getting approved) and that's available in only a very few states but then you wouldn't know any more about guns than MSNBC or Rachel Maddow.

The vast majority of US states do not allow "automatics",concealed carry or otherwise. That fact seems to get in the way of your deluded little mind. Only Rifles are slung around your chest and even Ted Nugent leaves his in the pickup truck when he goes to Kroegers.

Handguns are never "automatic" unless you are either a hitman or Mexican Cartel drug runner and they dont care about ANY laws. Most (95%) of gun crime here is between criminals not ordinary citizens or police regardless of what lies you have been led to believe.

An armed policeman in Paris MIGHT have been able to stop the massacre at Charlie Hebdo or at least be able to delay them until more police could have made it there. Sure were ALOT of "militarized" SWAT cops running around AFTER the shootings. Don't see the leftist news outlets complaining about THAT now do you?

Just proves that everything you hear about guns is slanted BS, presented by liars who think they know better but have no understanding or experience. A gun is as safe as an automobile if you know how to use them properly. Learn, dumbass!

Re: Fracking @Chris Miller

You haven't seen much of what's happened to Detroit then have you? Migrating to cities? Maybe over there, but it's only the poor here and probably there as well.

All the major cities are decaying rapidly, their infrastructure needs have been neglected for MANY years. This negligence is CRIMINAL as it now will take MORE money to fix or replace infrastructure that has been ignored, than it would have had it been done when noticed.

Roads and Bridges are literally rotting away while we put tax money into social entitlements that only benefit the non-productive. Sewers and Telecommunication infrastructures are woefully under funded and overtaxed. The more that occupy the cities, the less can be fixed as there is no respite for any shutdowns.

All the while, the "middle class" is paying for both the rich and the poor. The only thing "middle" about the middle class is that we are in the middle of a rock and a hard place.

Multiple infractions should multiply the fine. 90% of all fines MUST be given to the plaintiffs.

No telephone or other direct conversations should ever be allowed between prospective and former employers or HR departments. This should be subject to audit.

There should be a form that the previous employer fills out and gives to the employee that details all legal aspects that are relative to any prospective employer.

This is the only way to prevent this problem.

SpaceX drone hovership ROCKET LANDER BURN: Musk to try again

Dan Paul

Re: "floating barge" @Tom 13

Tom,

No one else has been successful in the unmanned, automated landing and recovery of the first stage of a rocket. Even the Lunar Excursion Module was completely manned and autopilot was overridden and a manual descent was undertaken on the first landing.

The very reason SpaceX tried this landing on a barge is due to the danger of such a landing for the first time out of the box.

Even a desert landing requires a fly over of inhabited land, something that SpaceX was CLEARLY trying to avoid here.

The shuttle landings were ALL at an airfield runway, whether in Florida or elsewhere and were mostly piloted. Only the XB-37 is unmanned. All were lifting bodies and they "flew", not "descended".

The Dragon 9 first stage vertical descent is unprecidented, thus the anticipation of a "50/50" landing. I would say it would be "ludicrous" to use anything else than a floating landing platform.

The mere fact that they were this close is nothing short of brilliant.

Toyota to Tesla: we can play the free patent game as well

Dan Paul

A better solution than Hydrogen is CNG

CNG (compressed natural gas) is a better fuel cell solution and it's already available. It has far less safety issues than H2 and has roughly 4 times more energy per cubic foot than H2. It even works directly without fuel cells in existing vehicles with slight modifications to the intake. It is FAR cleaner than diesel or gasoline ever could be.

But it's NOT happening with $50 dollar per barrel oil prices.

Keep dreaming.

Dan Paul

Re: Could be useful @Imanidiot

Have an upvote. Hydrogen is widely known as completely unusable as a retail fuel source simply BECAUSE of the danger.

This is why Toyota made these patents "Free" because they won't lose any money or market share while "appearing" to be munificent. By the time we have fusion electrical generation to make hydrogen cheap enough, none of their patents will be applicable anyway.

Praxair, a longtime producer of Hydrogen gas has a website that explains the safety issues with Hydrogen better than I can. All I can say is if you ever saw the plastic bag experiment with oxy acetylene, you would never think about using hydrogen gas as a portable fuel source

Inaccurate Statistics (Agreed chivo243)

Typical BS from another "Survey Company". We must all be insane because we keep doing the same thing and expect different results

Why is it that these "surveys' think they actually have any kind of representative sample to base their results on? Using the USA as an example, 535 divided by 310 MILLION is 0.000001726.

Cold spit in the breeze has more significance. Pointless numbers that mean less than nothing and yet the public still believes them.

The survey companies themselves choose what areas to survey and thus choose the results of the poll before it even is completed.

Cell phone only respondents will be heavily weighted in favor of internet junkies.

So will online respondents, and any respondent from an area code or exchange located in a college town will have a much greater likelihood of responding the way the survey companys true customer wants the survey to come out.

Want a survey positive on the importance of the internet? Then only choose from a narrow pool that are 90% more likely to respond more positively about it.

German minister fingered as hacker 'steals' her thumbprint from a PHOTO

Dan Paul

Re: Real Security systems

Most of the time this is really about the "casual" attacker who does not have the resources to obtain your optometrists info. Fingerprints are somewhat secure if combined with a second factor like a strong password. However, the cheap fingerprint readers that are provided by typical phone and computer manufacturers are completely insufficient. "Secure" fingerprint readers are very expensive. You got exactly what you didn't pay for.

Few if any are going to try to make a fake eye and present it to a retina scanner. Most of the good retina scanners out there are looking for a living retina with the same pulse and temperature that a good fingerprint reader will look for.

Both technologies are evolving and will only get better. But the fact remains that a fingerprint reader alone is not a panacea to the security problem

Re: Dunno about warming @H4rmony

Hydrogen is not a method to store energy H4rmony and I never said it was, it is a gas that burns with an almost invisible flame and has no odor.

You continually offer the use of hydrogen as a "solution" to our energy needs, when it does not work. The only method of creating enough electricity, cheaply enough to make Hydrogen is Fusion and that isn't happening anytime soon and we would be better served to use the electricity directly if it were.

It leaks easily across even solid metal, especially the kind of metal tubing that would be used in any transportation device. It is the smallest atom in the table, so small that it penetrates metal seals and metals tanks right though the grain structure. Since you mention Hydrogen Embrittlement you should know that the only metals (Monel & Hastelloy) that help prevent it are daftly expensive, hard to machine, immpossible to weld and are jokingly called "unobtanium" by those who use it.

Now where would you store H2 in an auto? A tank in the trunk most likely. Let that tank sit in the sun in a Texas parking lot all day and climb in and start the car. Since H2 requires a Class 1 Div 1 Group B, electrical rating there will not be a car in the world that will meet the explosion proof rating for Hydrogen gas and only a few dozen transport truck that could do it. Go find insurance.

At room temperature, liquid hydrogen tanks must be vented or they will explode. Otherwise they must be refrigerated at an excessive energy cost and the liquifaction temperature is -423 F. Go find a chiller system to produce that temperature. You can't afford it or the energy costs.

The Hydrogen trucks you see leaving an Air Liquide, Praxair, or Linde gas liquifaction facility all have one thing in common, a trail of leaking gas. You do not want to light a cigarette around those trucks.

If you "break" the atomic bonds of water to make H2 and O (Electrolysis), the electrical energy it takes to do so, is enormous compared to the process of combustion. It takes more energy to produce Hydrogen than you can ever get in return.

Since you OBVIOUSLY can't understand, check the following link. They (Praxair) are the experts on the subject and I have only got 24 years of industry experience and training on the selection and use of equipment for just such a Hydrogen application as electrical turbines, reduction furnaces, the control valves that direct the H2 in a chemical or power plant, the tubing that is acceptable to transport the H2 from the storage tank, the pressure relief valves that prevent the h2 from blowing up the tanks, the regulators that control the gas pressure being delivered, the analyzers that check the gas for purity (CO or CO2 contamination at less than 1 PPM in pure H2 is a difficult measurement)

http://h2bestpractices.org/h2properties/

As Hydrogen is not the best choice, then the only alternative gas is CNG or LNG. Both are being used as fuel right now and are far cleaner and safer than hydrocarbon liquid fuels like gasoline or kerosene.

Credas, You would be correct, the best COTS solution is a chaingun.

However the US Navy is also looking at Rail Guns to replace Phalanx, but the laser could have some capabilities against incoming anti-ship missles as they often present themselves head-on and the speed of light is kind of hard to beat.

All they need to do is fry the electronics in the guidance section to bring it down.

Whose to say you could not have multiple weapons sharing the same radar?

As far as penetrating projectiles go, those from a rail gun would be much faster than those from a chaingun. It does take longer to "charge" the weapon but have you ever seen what one can do? The projectile goes 5,000 miles per hour and ranges approaching 100 miles. (and 32 megajoules of energy at the muzzle) That's like being hit with an asteroid, not much can stop it.

Look for the video link at the bottom of this web page

BTW, mirrors or light guides as anti-laser "armour" are often ineffective. The "Star Wars" program from the Reagan era used spinning mirrors as part of the space based laser itself. They spun to increase wear life but had to be replaced very often as the first surface mirror material would vaporize after a few shots.

This newer shipboard laser is solid state and is further described in this link:

http://www.onr.navy.mil/Media-Center/Press-Releases/2014/LaWS-shipboard-laser-uss-ponce.aspx

In order to do any real damage the ground based laser would have to emit infrared energy (think CO2 Laser) which would melt anything like a mirror in a few seconds or less without even having tar on it.

Gottalottaballs here...

Then what exactly have the EUC and various European courts been doing demanding that Google (a US based company) do this or that to "forget" a particular search that a person or company would like removed from Google's search index as a result of an order from a European Court?

"Muižnieks said there “should be limits on the extraterritorial exercise of national jurisdiction in relation to transnational cybercrimes”. In other words, the US shouldn’t be able to access your private data in Europe just because it wants to."

To paraphrase "In other words, the EUC (or any other entity) shouldn’t be able to access your private data in (wherever) just because it wants to."

Could you people please make up your minds and figure out what you want?

Mars changed.....

What happened was that Mars changed from a planet with liquid water and appreciable atmosphere to one that does not. That's all we know for sure.

There are too many possibilities to postulate why, but an asteroid strike could certainly cause this. Various scenarios show that an asteroid strike could literally vaporize all the liquid water from any planets surface and along with it, the planets atmosphere could be blown into space.

There are many asteroids near Mars and the gravitational influences from Jupiter and Saturn have regularly caused issues, possibly tearing a proto-planet apart to create the asteroid belt.

It would have to be a lot colder than Mars is or have a much higher atmospheric pressure than the gravity on Mars could create to have liquid methane or methane ice.

Real Printed Books

Screw ALL the ebook crap. This only serves to enrich those that provide them like Amazon or Apple, NOT the author or the bookstores.

A real book helps to support jobs in many markets including more renumeration for the authors than the skinflints at Amazon or Apple want to pay.

With a real book; you have the the author, the publisher, the retailer, the ink and paper manufacturers, the binders and printers, the shippers, etc, etc.

Manufacturers need to stop looking at employees like they are overhead, just because any "savings" from creating electronic media versus print media only go towards the big corporations pockets.

Real jobs that pay real wages are a boost to the economy and even the employers, not a drain.

If everyone is on welfare, they can't buy your product and there would be an increase in corporate taxes to help pay for the welfare.

Re: The $450m penalty won't be a crippling financial blow for Apple

If that isnt enough to get their attention then I suggest a percentage of revenue.

Something like 20% of the GROSS SALES ought to get their attention and make them stop future "bad decisions".

BTW, have an upvote.
