Re: Smell?

It's a laser. Burning is how lasers cut.

FTA:

After years of research and development, they discovered a chromophore in the hair which can be cut when hit with a particular light wavelength.

Molecules can be cleaved when hit by right wavelength and amount of energy. That's not the same as burning, which would require more energy in this case of this "razor".

PleebSmash

Re: interesting...

Not with what they have currently. In the video (update #5) it cuts along the entire edge of the "fiber", but very badly and requires multiple passes to knock out a single hair.

Re: Smell?

Does it produce a smell?

No. Because we're not actually burning the hair, it doesn't produce a burnt hair smell.

Re: Zen: good?

Zen will include 8 core desktop chips. Not the 4-module, "8 core" clustered multithreading chips from Bulldozer, but 8 hopefully physical cores with simultaneous multithreading, like Intel. People still bought Bulldozer chips even with AMD's failure to compete with Intel.

AMD APUs for laptops have been competitive with Intel, because they offer decent graphics performance at a low cost. Skylake may be bridging the graphics gap with AMD/Carrizo, but Skylake GT3 and GT4 parts are either missing or expensive. If AMD can put out a new mobile APU with a big boost in IPC and a graphics boost, it could win against Intel in any machine without a dedicated graphics card. The ultimate win would be getting Apple to use its chips instead of Core i5 and Core i7 in Macbook Air and Pro, since it would be an acknowledgment that they tick all the boxes: cost, low power/heat, high CPU performance, high GPU performance. It would help counteract this too.

PleebSmash

Re: Well that blows..

No, they switched Zen and ARM. 2016 and 2017 from 2017 and 2016.

PleebSmash
Alert

Zen: good?

Skylake looks terrible. Barely any IPC increase for desktop users, and no mainstream core increase. Overclocking is better than the messed up Haswell and Broadwell... but even some Sandy Bridge users won't need the upgrade. On mobile battery life and graphics performance is improved somewhat, but GT3 and GT4 parts are hard or impossible to find yet.

AMD has hinted at a 40% instructions per clock increase for Zen. They could actually deliver that since the Bulldozer cores were so bad compared to Intel. They already deliver good price/performance in most segments, especially with low-cost APUs. Maybe Zen will make 2016 the year of AMD.

As if it wasn't already hard enough for AMD, their potential savior/flop may be scheduled for release in Oct. 2016, a full 13 months from now and long after the huge back-to-school season. Zen will be competing against Kaby Lake rather than Skylake, for what that's worth.

Seagate promises to HAMR us all with spinning rust next year

PleebSmash

Re: Two Heads Per Platter

Back when NAND was running to an endurance wall, it seemed like HDDs could linger on. Now 3 bits-per-cell vertical NAND is mainstream and you can get a bigger 2.5" SSD (15 terabytes) than 3.5" HDD (10 terabytes).

WD and Seagate have to bring the HAMR down and deliver drives at $10-20 per terabyte and lower. They also have to ship NAND themselves. Hybrid drives can still be a good idea, especially if every hard drive they sell ships with NAND.

128TB SSD by 2018? Toshiba promises much, delivers ... a little

PleebSmash

Re: Media race

What race? Ordinary folks don't bother with torrents. Very few customers (rich folks) will want 4K by 100-200 GB Blu-ray disc. Some people will back up their old DVDs, others will just sell them, trash them, give them away.

PleebSmash

Re: A 128TB SSD in 3 years

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/toshiba-tsv-technology,29851.html

This is why Toshiba can make 128 TB SSD claims. Stacks of stacks.

It would seem likely that a 128 TB 2.5" SSD would at least be cheaper in $/TB terms, even it uses both layers of 3D NAND and TSV stacked dies. 4 bits per cell seems uncertain; 33% more capacity than TLC in the same space, at the cost of endurance, which is in turn balanced by the extreme 3D overprovisioning.

Why Nobody Should Ever Search The Ashley Madison Data

PleebSmash
Stop

NOT a Joke or Troll

From my read it isn't a spoof or troll.

1. High profile events lead to poisoned torrents and scams everywhere. You may be a techie, but if you don't do your research and just grab 10 GB or hit shady domains, don't be surprised when it comes true.

2. There's no such thing as a free lunch, especially if you didn't do your research.

3. Also entirely true, although the theory that this anonymous journalist is covering his/her ass is a funny one. Given the tone, the Reg links, and the fact that it's published here, it's safe to assume it's a Reg hack who wrote this.

4. Bait/funny heading, but the point gets across. There were legitimate uses of the site, and users' stories have trickled out. This dump is a bit different in that some versions of the dataset are for simply checking hacked names and emails, sans credit card details.

"the respected expert and professional investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald" could be a bait line given some Reg disdain for him and "Snowden newsletter" The Intercept, despite the recent Reg-Intercept collab on Duncan Campbell and many recent examples of non-Snowden reporting. The two columns Greenwald has published about the Ashley Madison moralizing are worth a read (here's the other one).

That so many users rushed to call this a late April Fool's joke or fake/wrong is telling. It's clear from surveys that people really hate infidelity, but like most things people moralize about, the reactions are exaggerated, unnecessary, and damaging. Even those that cheated on their partner rather than get consent for using AM should be treated as victims of yet another data breach, rather than targets for online stoning.
