Seriously, friends. You suck at driving. Get a computer behind the wheel to save your life

Re: Another way of looking at automatic braking.

Cars are more and more a lifestyle choice and not a necessity. Doesn't that imply that those who use them most are, at least to a certain extent, choosing to risk life and limb simply by doing so?

I think you're making a universal assumption. Here in the States, some areas have excellent publc transportation (local). Other areas, none at all.

Putting the developers on the line would mean that they'd never want to sign the software off, just in case anything ever did go wrong.

I would have a hard time doing this, either via law or even as a juror at a trial. We all know that developers do as they're told. Sign off means that they followed the company spec per managlement. Now if manglement (up to to and actually including board) were culpable then that's a good thing.

Directors are responsible and should get the same jail terms as anyone else caught selling credit card details.

Not sure why you have downvotes except maybe it's lawyers or their lackies. But, that last bit has always made me wonder about corporate America. The board and execs run amok... fines are levied and those responsible are never "touched" by the system. So, I guess if you're high enough up the corporate ladder, crime does pay.

Re: Poor Design

Exactly... XB-71, Concorde, and few designs all look very similar due to form following function and not some fanciful design or a "designer". Cars are like that now that the designers of the monstrosity of 50's are all gone and the industry has had a re-think.

This doesn't mean the Norks aren't a threat. But it's not one to be over-stated, given how crappy their whole infrastructure and capabilities are.

Re: An Observation

Is he paranoid? Or just an NK version of a millennial? Or a very shrewd card player? The previous leaders understood brinksmanship, playing the bluff, etc. They grew up in WWII and the Korean War. Current Dear Leader seems to have no clue or perhaps that's the game he's playing.

It's a dangerous game at best. If he's listening to the old guard even a little and done his homework, he knows the game and the limits. If not, there's a whole bunch of hurt headed his way and probably from the very old guard he's surrounded himself with.

Mark 85

Re: Obvious question. Could you split the whole grid into smaller sections to be more survivable?

Theoretically, as I recall, the entire power grid could be shut down pretty fast at the main points. However, the restarting and reconnection will take some time... probably at least a week or two. Depends on well the shutdown and isolation downstream of the main points is done. If downstream didn't open the breakers, that will cause the main trunks to shut back down. Basically, if the downstream aren't open, the mains are dumping into a short circuit and then shutting down to protect themselves.

Car Racing is the only esport in which your gaming skills have any relevance to the real version of the sport.

The one big difference is that after a shunt, there's no "start over" in the real world. Relevant to the real version only so much. While the simulator can provide training (much like aircraft flight simulators used by the military and airlines) it can only go so far.

FTC wants AT&T to kick in $4bn to help balance US budget. Why? Some dodgy ads or something

Mark 85

Re: Good for the FTC!

Why do these corporations think it's a good idea to lie to people and try to lock them into confusing, tricky contracts so they can shaft them? This is good customer relations?

Simples really.... most sheeple don't read the fine print nor have an interest in doing so. They see the $50 per month and jump without any due diligence. In some ways, it's like decades ago, furniture stores always advertised in shouty letters: SALE!!! Well.. yeah.. everything was for sale but the prices were never reduced. It took a lot of effort to get regulations in place to counter this. It was weasel wording at it's best to play on buyer's emotions. Same thing with the current crowd.

Re: Dear Register --- Careers Advice Column :)

One should also survey the terrain and the job they seek. Our department changed management seemingly yearly for a lot of dumb reasons. The biggest though is the manager at the next level got promoted or quit and then the new manager wanted his/her 'friends' in the group supervisor position. I watched that for many years. I had a lot of people pushed me to apply for the supervisor of Support the next time it came up. I never did. I was happier being a grunt in a remote office (one man show there) and remained gainfully employed unlike others who tried to jump up the company ladder.

Oh, and another thing: Robert E. Lee was a goddamned traitor. That statue and every other monument to traitorous Confederates should be melted and the bronze thrown into the sea.

Funny thing (not ha-ha funny) is that Lee didn't want to see any either. He believed the country needed to heal and one way to help that healing was "no statues".

Re: @Mark 85

While you speak of civil discourse, things get confusing. Do you condone the violence caused by those protesting the protest? Its one thing to shout down the speaker, its another to come armed ready for violence and to attack the protest.

Civil discourse to me is not violence or physical confrontation. Those last two are intimidation and not discourse. I do not condone the violence. If we, as a country open the can of worms by banning the speech of those we disagree with, then we have sunk to their level. Once we start down that sloop there's no telling where it will stop.

I do agree with you. Sadly, the group that got noticed in this Confederacy statue/memorial conflict was an extremist group and the back lash is bound to do no justice to the memorials or to the people.

Let's go back further to the Civil Rights marches. Or the Labor Unions marches of the late 1800's. I daresay that history is repeating itself... over and over and over.

Mark 85

I see we're about get into the "freedom" and "rights" thing again. I remember an old saying that seems overlooked these days: "The right to swing my arm stops at your face." I'm thinking civil discourse is lost on certain groups.

Very well said, sir. Sadly, there is no perfect system as envisioned by the philosophes, etc. As written by Marx, communism could be very doable. But he was a philosopher and a dreamer in too many ways. Same for capitalism where its now been perverted even more so than in the past to give us the 1%ers which is a closed club for the most part. . Human greed and the quest for power (and/or money) always override the philosophy. Nazism, et al, are an excuse for bigotry.
