If you've ever wondered whether the FCC boss is a Big Cable stooge – well, wonder no more

Mark 85

Re: "A boastful, insecure and slightly pathetic figure."

I think this has nailed it though the word "slightly" doesn't need to be there. I suspect that he won't last long in the corporate world when his tenure is over. Then again, he's serving a purpose to his masters with his brown nose and self promotion. The brown nose part might get him a few years in the non-government world as a "yes man" and general lackey.

Here we go again... UK Prime Minister urges nerds to come up with magic crypto backdoors

Mark 85

Re: There's no magic encryption tree

I wouldn't use "hairbrained" as I suspect she's pulling this out of her orifice that's lower to the aft. .

Mark 85

Funny thing about this argument and all the BS flying about. I would think that the "security agencies" would know that any encryption with a backdoor is useless. Maybe the fightback is to insist that they use the same encryption they want us to use?

Then again, we've not heard from the grunts in the trenches in the agencies, only the political appointees who are mouthing the words they need to say to keep their jobs.

Camels disqualified from Saudi beauty contest for Botox-enhanced pouts

Mark 85

Re: Just remind us - what's the IT angle here?

It's Bootnotes.... a welcome respite from all the BS of politics, IT manglement, etc.

Mark 85

I suppose that if dog and cat contests offered prize money equal to that for camel pageants, the cheating would be rampant.

Upon further reflection, I'll add that even for human beauty pageants though, IIRC, there's as much going on as there is in the camel contests.

Biggest Washington DC lobbyist is now a tech giant (yes, it's Google)

Mark 85

Re: I wonder how much of that was lobbying for the recent tax bill?

Well... yes. You expected something different with the "money party" being in control?

Disclaimer: No matter which party is in power, someone gets screwed. How much and how often is open to debate.

You want wires with that? Burger King backs, er, net neutrality

Mark 85

They could have went a bit further. Once neutrality is gone, Big Cable theoretically could start charging any website a fee for moving their data along to a customer. So BK could add things like "pickle.. that will be $0.05", "mustard... only if you get the pickle", "onions.... $0.10".

Google yanks cash firehose from Lunar X Moonshot comp. The actual Moon shot one

Mark 85

They did it wrong....

Maybe they're going about this the wrong way... Make it a "manned" trip to the moon and the astronaut will be selected and set (willingly or unwillingly) based on winning using paid ballots. Say $10 a vote. I'm sure here in the US that there's XXXX millions that would be donated to have someone shipped to the moon.

I'll leave it an exercise for the reader to figure out the person most likely to win the "election" and be sent. .

H-1B visa hopefuls, green card holders are feeling the wrath of 'America first' Trump

Mark 85

Re: Go Trump Go.

that the system was being abused by big corporations to depress wages and replace American workers with lower-paid overseas employees.

The problem is the tax code. It's more profitable for a corporation to hire in "temps" under the H-1B then to hire a "local". No benefits for H-1B's, no union rules or laws getting in the way.

Elon Musk offered no salary, $55bn bonus to run Tesla for a decade

Mark 85

Re: Will Tesla be independent for that long?

I agree on all points. I do think that Tesla is still targeting the high-end market. For Tesla to hit those lofty goals in sales they need some vehicles for mainstream market and priced accordingly. When Tesla starts building for mainstream then, and only then, will it come out of the niche it's created for itself.

If he can pull off a "Henry Ford" and mass produce cars/trucks, etc. for the masses, then Tesla will make it, otherwise it's just another high-end market company making toys for the wealthy.

It would seem that code will need to be tighter and more thought out. I suspect the days of bloatware and those who can only write bloatware are doomed. It's also quite possible that many of the tools will need to be re-written in order to output optimum code. OTOH, those who can produce tight code with no bloat, etc. will do very well.

Electric cars to create new peak hour when they all need a charge

Mark 85

Re: I've been pointing this out for years.

Don't forget the greenies who gloat about how they will drop air pollution but then get really irritated when you ask "where's the electricity coming from"? And followed by "how much will all this manufacturing of solar panels, extra power plants and fuel impact the environment.". For some reason they don't have an answer.

Meh... I'm a bit of a curmudgeon about cell phones. I don't do texting, Google, apps, etc. Just voice phone calls as needed. So my Samsung SGH-A847 is cheap enough, battery gets charged once a week or so and no headaches. On top of that, I'm not stuck paying nearly a grand for a cell phone.

It may not be what all the cool kids have, but it works for me and I'm not running around all day with a cell phone in my hand like too many other people I know.

Facebook invents new unit of time to measure modern attention spans: 1/705,600,000 of a sec

Mark 85

Re: Always Thought that

I suspect that this "time" was designed to count anyone (all of us none users) who even thought of following a link to FB as another FB user to inflate the numbers. The only way out is to not even think or mention FB.. Oops.. my bad.. mentioned them twice, they counted 2 clicks.

After reading various commentards posts to various articles, on what they have hidden in their attics/basements, I suspect that there's quite a few of them that could qualify for an award. I'm just not sure what award they should qualify for...

Re: There will be competition

For the cable companies stock prices (and board bonuses) profits must go up... for that to happen, they need to slash expenses and raise rates. So..... no regulation lets them have it to the joy of the shareholders (returning that value, of course) and ensures the board and the C-suite reap large bonuses. Those of us who want, need, use cable pay the price of course and as we know, no one gives a crap about us except at election time.

Maybe the first against the wall should be lobbyists? Followed by C-suite types?

F-35 'incomparable' to Harrier jump jet, top test pilot tells El Reg

Mark 85

Re: VIFing?

I also seem to recall a platoon of upgunned (105s) Israeli Shermans trumping a bigger herd of buttoned-up Egyptian(/Syrian?) T-55s in the 67 war.

I recall that also. There's also the "case" where a Marine CH-53 helicopter shot down an attacking North Vietnamese MIG.

Mark 85

Re: VIFing?

There are those, however, who would argue that the days of plane-on-plane dog-fighting are over, so such a capability is redundant today.

Bull.... they've been saying that since the late 50's. Then combat starts and "oops... where's the guns?". Vietnam and the F4 pointed that out very well.

North Korea's finest spent 2017 distributing RATs, wipers, and phish

Mark 85

Who has the most to gain from North and South Korea not getting along?

Both sides actually. South Korea and the US on one side, North Korea and China on the other. China gets it's buffer zone (NK) and the US gets bases to keep an eye on China. The powers that be running things behind the scene have animosities going back a long way, China in particular has fears. This also applies to Russia which has fears of "out siders" invading that goes back a long way so they want their buffer countries.

Wanna motivate staff to be more secure? Don't bother bribing 'em

Mark 85

Re: "Praising staff who follow the rules to keep their jobs?"

It's not primary school,

There in a nutshell is the problem. Too many of the younger group (and even older employees) are embedded in the "participation award" mindset. Give an award for "no absences or tartys" Give an award for "parking your care between the lines". I've seen these and more and it's pretty sad that the companies do it. You end up with the few who get the "awards" over and over and the rest don't care.
