Vatican sets up dedicated exorcism training course

Mark 85

Because many of us would like to employ an in-house exorcist to rid our data centres of the evil within.

What? The rid ourselves of the Board of Directors? Hmm.... where did I leave that Bible and cup of Holy Water?

Does my boom look big in this? New universe measurements bewilder boffins

Pssst.... <whispers> this is astronomy and not politics. The forum you seek is over there ------>

Re: Hubble constant is apparently not a constant

At one point, "constant" worked, but apparently something (maybe the observations?) has changed. It might even be some "Doppler" effect or maybe the rate of expansion has changed?

He's cheesed it! French flick pirate on the lam to swerve €80m fine, two-year stretch in the clink

Mark 85

Now that fine and jail time seems like it would be a deterrent unlike some of the penalties issued here in the States for similar crimes. It's possible he's pulling an Assange and hiding out somewhere in an embassy but I kind of doubt that as it would have made the news. So... mom and dad's basement?

Nobody expects the social media inquisition! OK, everybody did, UK politicos

Mark 85

Want to speak to your friends? Send them a text or Whatsapp message.

What's wrong with actually calling and talking? I don't regard texting and Whatsapp to be "talking" as too much of communication is nuances in voice (and if in the same place as the other person visual contact) is lost and rather impersonal with just text type communication.

Seriously... am I just being old-fashioned?

Re: RE: Wolfetone

, but if we take their racist and homophobic rags away from them they'll just fill up the pubs...And none of us want that

Oh, I don't know about that. I can think of a bunch of politicians who I rather see hanging out in a pub than in their "official" place of work.

Unlucky Linux boxes trampled by NPM code update, patch zapped

So testing before deploying isn't a "thing" anymore?

Every place I've worked always tested any new code or updates before putting it on production machines. Is this something DevOps or some other new paradigm?

Lloyds Banking Group to splash £3bn on tech

Re: Remove the hype and check the reality

Two keywords give all the info one needs to know: outsourcing and cost-cutting. They have sipped the Kool-Aid and started the slid to the bottom.

As HPE trousers soaring profit, new CEO looks at cost-cutting Next plan and thinks: More of that!

Mark 85

Re: Evryone is doing well

Not so fast... yes, they had an increase in income but, they're cutting costs meaning employees. And the new guy is going to continue with the plan Meg started. At what point does cutting employees kill new products, sales, etc.? The investors might be excited for a couple of quarters but it probably won't last.

Re: The world we live in gets darker and darker every day.

That will probably start with us IT types first then get picked up by the masses at some point.... but it might already be too late.

How about a robot-sex-doll with the same voice as your wife? File under 'S' for 'Stepford Wives' (original version, of course).

Remember what happed to Henry Mudd in Star Trek. I think I'll pass on this idea.

Couple this tech with the video face replacement tech and there really isn't any good uses for this. Things were scary enough and about to get worse.

SpaceX's internet satellites to beam down 'Hello world' from orbit

Mark 85

Re: Litter louts

Not just rockets. but ships with cargo, dead fish, and even airplanes. Oh.. and humans, dead ones, but humans. SpaceX is at least trying and having success at recovering their rockets. Not just from a pollution standpoint but there's a savings in resources. etc. They should be commended not called "louts".

That microchipped e-passport you've got? US border cops still can't verify the data in it

Mark 85
Facepalm

Here we are 13 years later and they still can read and verify the chips? On top of that they haven't even looked for or ordered the software? Yet, these guys claim to be defending the country's borders from the evil (fill in enemy of the day). Not surprising, just unexpected that this sort of crap is happening.

America's broadband speed map is back! And it doesn't totally suck!

Mark 85

Price information is meaningless unless there's competition. Where I am, it's one provider who has more than 25 mbps download. The get the "high speed" of allegedly 100 mbps and thus own the market. No competition so no need to mention price, right?

Hey, you. App dev. You like secure software? Let's learn from Tinder, Facebook's blunders

Market Saturation coming?

Off the wall question... does the Petro smell like tulips?

Seems that at some point, the market will be saturated by crypto currencies.. then what? The bottom falls out and the only one's who make any money are the ones who cashed out ahead of time. I have a feeling that this one might be the start after reading the article and I'm thinking it's wishful thinking on Maduro's part. Somehow, he and his government are going to control this? Mining isn't an option or is it since the currency will be "issued"?

Use ad blockers? Mine some Monero to get access to news, says US site

Mark 85

3- Blocking Ads is just as much a security decision these days.

There's the big one. How many times have we read that some major news org is slinging malware in it's ads that they have no control over? I'm old school in that I can ignore ads no matter how shiny or noisy. It's the security holes these things open up that makes me nervous.

Mark 85

Re: Just Visiting

I tried the site with and without my adblocker on. However, my HOSTS file killed whatever ads they were showing. It also kills the miners.... Still got to look at the site without any warnings or popups. Maybe it's a random popup?

A game to 'vaccinate' people against fake news? Umm... Fake news

Mark 85

We do see the reverse effect here in the States

This label (fake news) is dangerous when over-used. We have a President who is constantly using "Fake News" at every opportunity. What this seems to be doing is making people think it's not because he's overused the term to the point that it's tossed at anyone or anything. We're becoming inoculated to ignore those words as it's rapidly becoming another version of "where's smoke, there's fire".

Australia joins the 'decrypt it or we'll legislate' club

Mark 85

In what can only be called a cruel irony, Dutton returned to IT topics later in his speech, promising that his department will help keep Australians safe from cyber threats,

So exactly how will the government do this beside issue warm, fuzzy platitudes about how safe you are? Magic pixie dust maybe? Judging from the reports we've seen, governments can't keep themselves safe.

Re: Robot manufacturing

What am I missing?

For exploration like what were doing now, there's no saving in just sending a "builder" and lots of parts. Best to build and test here on earth first then send. Up there, you send a "factory" machine to build and the parts then assemble the parts and test. How do you fix if there's no testing bot? Or repair bot? We're actually saving money the way it's being done.

Then there's finding the raw materials and processing them into something useful which hasn't been done. The "finding" part is really just now starting but it'll take time to find the ores. And the issue of mining it and refining and then manufacturing. Not so simple in reality.

Mark 85

Which President? We've had more than a few in the last 30-50 years. Oh... the current one.... I see.

Kentucky gov: Violent video games, not guns, to blame for Florida school massacre

Mark 85

Go back a bit in history to the early 1900's. There were protests and riot by labor unions and the government sent in the troops to "restore order" which usually involved gunfire from the troops only. Also see rh587 reply here for more specific history: https://forums.theregister.co.uk/forum/1/2018/02/16/violent_video_games_guns_florida/#c_3432326

Re: Liberal 'logic'

"spray of bullets" usually rapid fire and not well-aimed shots. Unlikey to come from a bolt-action. But the media goes for the sensational headlines, etc. and so if the Kennedy assassination happened today, Oswald would have shot him and the car up with a spray of bullets.

Re: Oh, come on

This isn't about "common sense".. MS has deep pockets and for some reason, Lundgren's lawyers either didn't bring all this up about the licenses, etc. or failed to clearly explain it to the judge/jury at the first trial. And, let's not forget that it's about "law" and "lawyers" and not about common sense. If it were that simple, there never would have been any lawsuits for people falling off ladders or spilling a hot cup coffee from McDonald's on their lap as they drive off from the drive through.

Re: Is Eric gunning for Congress or aiming higher?

He may indeed have high aspirations but in the mean time, more power to him. I do wish the other AG's in rest of the States would follow his lead for consumers.

Mark 85

I'm surprised more states haven't jumped on this. We're on Charter/Spectrum here (west coast) and it is crap. Sadly, our only other choice is DSL and it's even worse by a large margin.

Mark 85

Re: Huh ?

Clearly, I don't speak DevOps.

Have an upvote for common sense. Tell me in plain English (or whatever language we can communicate in) what you want/need and why. I'll get it done. If it's a redundant function or a problem, we'll get a cup of coffee and sort it out. Certainly not 2 months worth of pondering the meaning of the universe and all that.

Google reveals Edge bug that Microsoft has had trouble fixing

Mark 85

Re: To be fair to MS

They've busy trying to convince the holdouts how glorious Win10 is plus trying to get everyone to stop using the old OS and browsers. They're working hard also to sell more ads for the OS you pay for.. dual income opportunity. So who's got time for patching bugs when there is more profit to be made?

Developer recovered deleted data with his face – his Poker face

Mark 85

Re: Deleting production data

My first IT job as a programmer on a UNIX system. Note... we didn't have a "test" environment, only "live" data. I'm writing a search utility for marketing and did some cut and pasting from another script to speed up the writing process with the intention (what the road to hell is paved with) of fixing the thing. Come in the next morning and the boss wants met to run what I have done so he can see my progress. Cue mad panic as suddenly all the data on the mainframe disappeared. Luckily, the backups were on site and only about an hours work was lost by the staff. I kept my job as did the manager though we both got reamed for it. The following week a "test" server appeared at our door. The same one the manager had been requesting for two years.
