FBI raids home of spy sat techie over leak of secret comms source code on Facebook

Re: Idiot.

He and other like him probably believe either they are above the law or the rest of the world isn't as smart as they are. I daresay we've all seen it... the one person who thinks they know everything and are so "special" that the rules don't apply to them. Usually doesn't end well* for them.

Mark 85

Censorship coming to a website near you?

I'm hearing this "something must be done" about the online world. I fear that the answers will lead to censorship and only the info, data, verbiage approved by "those who know better" will come out of this. The cherished concept of 'free speech" is being eroded by various lawmakers and governments pretty much world wide. Education has been dumbed down such that many people can't think for themselves and only parrot the government line.

Yes, I'm afraid where this will lead. Something should be done but I believe it's the dumbing down of education. Where are our thinkers? Our rational thinkers? Not in government? Not in the board rooms? Sadly, I don't see a quick fix for this and a long term solution probably won't happen once the spoon fed youngsters grow up and come to power.

I wish I could feel like there's a future for thought, discourse, and acton without the outside influences and censorship that seems to be on the lips of government types worldwide.

Extinction..

Sadly, for these critters and the multitude of critters that have gone extinct, the general population didn't care and nor (except for a relatively few) will most people care IF they're even aware.

Re: "...if you ignore the headlines."

Nothing new from that aspect. Look at any history via journalism and it's loaded with "click bait" (or maybe "pick up the paper, pay for it bait"). It used to be we only saw a few papers in local shops and some of the more "sensational" press in the form of tabloids. Now, via the 'Net, we can get them all so 'fake news', attention grabbing headlines, etc. isn't anything new.

Re: Awesome

In the grand scheme of existence, our universe may in fact be very, very small and in that context it's no great leap to imagine that if one universe could spawn, why not more?

The concept of "infinity" is a hard one for humans to grasp. In our minds, there has to be an "end" or a boundry because that is our environment on Earth. Our "universe" is basically what we can see or infer from our instruments. If the universe is infinite, the other "universes" maybe just be a continuation of our universe but farther away. Or not... if we ever find the wall and a sign "you are now at the end of the universe, go no farther" then we'll know.

Here is how Google handles Right To Be Forgotten requests

Mark 85

Google a name...

Anyone's name and (at least here in the States) and you'll get tons of sites who (for a fee) will display your public record... crimes, DOB, spouse(s), etc. Basically anything that's part of the public record. So "delisting" will remove all those links? Or just the "News" article links? Then if you really wanted to check someone out, just go to the local paper's website and use their article search.

I somehow don't think that having Google de-list these two "gentlemen" will solve their problem since there's so many other ways to find them.

It's not the machines at fault, but the operators, owners, etc.

Sysadmin held a rack of servers off the ground for 15 mins, crashed ISP when he put them down

Mark 85

I think that was pretty common back then. There was a large BBS* here in the States, maybe the largest at the time(?) that had something like 300 PC's (may have been more) stacked in a bedroom of the house the owners of the BBS lived in. Everything including modems were just packed and stacked from floor to ceiling with cabling across the floor, taped to the walls, etc. They even proudly had pictures available of their "state of the art server room" available for downloading.

Reminds of the amphibious cars they used to sell decades ago. Minor things like doors created problems for the car part (no doors) and doors would cause problems for the boat part (leaks). It's almost a game it seems but it's not. It's real and it can have real bad implications. I can understand that the cops would want one. But should they actually be allowed to have one? After repeated warnings Facebook bans Britain First for 'inciting hatred'

Mark 85

Re: In that case, ban Trump.

If you're going to ban folks for hate speech then ban Trump for doing it too. Or is that too much of a double standard for FB to stomach?

Our Dear Leader seems not to use FB but Twitter. But, hate speech seems to go all the way to the bottom so how many users would FB have left if all hate speech types were removed? Their followers would probably abandon FB also and follow them to the new place so FB might take a big hit.

The Great China Tech Panic is just posh xenophobia

Mark 85

So any expectations that a Chinese company will produce anything truly innovative are misplaced. It is MBA driven - acquire, brand, copy and build cheaply through the power of significantly better local supply chain.

Pretty much sums it up. Innovation in China won't happen until their culture changes and allows people to think for themselves and not be afraid to try new ideas. The government is very much afraid that thinking and new ideas might just toss them out the door. So for now, innovation comes from other places, cheap manufacturing and "grunt work" comes from China.

Just two of the 75 Microsoft bugs squashed this month have been publicly disclosed.

Interesting. By this, is MS not telling what's being fixed or were the bugs not disclosed publically? Either way means they could be slipping something under the door. They tried burning us on Win10 why not try for something else?

Fun fact of the day: Voice recognition tech is naturally sexist

Mark 85

Something is rotten in AI....

So what is the underlying reason? Males doing the programming and not women? Lack of a proper data set? Or is it something else like women's voices change (volume, pitch, even inflection of words)more then men's during stress, etc. and the computer can't cope?

Re: The problem it's personal, take people off Twitter and Facebook

Bob,

On the surface I agree..... but there's a problem you're overlooking. Trump's WH is in total disarray due to his firing of anyone who disagrees with him. That is very divisive and bad for morale. Healthy dialog is great so is listening to the ideas of others. Our President seems not to want to listen or engage in public dialog unless it's with those who agree with him.

Mark 85

Re: "our contribution to the overall health of the public conversation".

The worst part of that statement is actually the "et al." . Where do you stop and who decides who you don't debate?

That's an individual choice not a group choice or government choice and as it should be. I wouldn't want someone telling me to go debate and change X's mind, would you? Would anyone what a Big Brother telling you who to talk to or who to debate?
