Facebook far too consumed by greed to make itself less harmful to society, whistleblower tells Congress

Mark 85

Re: Pause

Very true, but then Zuck wouldn't stand to make his billions or at least keep them. It's seems that this is basically because FB is headed the way of MySpace as they lose the kids and all that's remaining is the old folks who like to argue over politics and religion.

I'm patiently waiting for FB just end up a dead zone in the universe.

Pretend starship captain to take trip in real space capsule

Re: Captains log...

He'll have to hold it in as there's no toilet on the spacecraft. And there's nothing to wipe out the Klingons.

Mark 85

Re: No red shirts allowed

Hmmmm I wonder if Bezos could be talked into having Shatner wear a red shirt . "It's required and note the company logo on it." or some such nonsense.

We have some sad news about Facebook. It has returned to the internet after six-hour mega outage

Mark 85

Re: Something Else

Possibly overloaded. The news articles on this outage mention that other services are being way overloaded. I guess people need their meme fixes and photos of granny's lunch.

There was on Yahoo! News... https://www.yahoo.com/news/facebook-whatsapp-instagram-outage-down-reactions-twitter-220806155.html

Re: Automation

Looking forward to seeing the related "Who, Me?" entry.

You beat me to this. I suspect that eventually, some poor intern or PFY will get the blame though. The person who did mess it up won't say word until they're long retired. Pity... the "Who Me?" would be classic.

Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram deplatform themselves: Services down globally

Re: Maybe it's deliberate

Nah...you're not crap. I've been wondering that also. There's coincidence and there's intent. In this case.. could be either/or.

Mark 85

Maybe it's a money thing....

Seems FB's stock is tanking today. Too soon to tell if it's because of the "crash" or yesterday's TV interview. Possibly both.

Mark 85

I suspect users are blaming their ISP for their lack of Facebook connectivity

Or the political party they dislike. Seems everything is political these days.

Mark 85

Re: Facebook down..... side benefits?

Time to think "what if?". What if this is intentional on FB's part? They've been taking a lot of crap from many corners lately. This would be a way to get all their users upset and demand that the critics leave them alone.

Wild speculation but after the last 4 years, I wouldn't put anything past them or anyone else.

Mark 85

Facebook down..... side benefits?

So after the panic in offices, etc. folks might actually be more productive then? Or just so upset they can't do anything. Families will have actually have to talk to each other with whatever consequences result from actual conversation.

For a fleeting day or hours, we're back in the 90's.

If you've ever been around a pig pen, you'd know that boots are required. Thus, seems a like an appropriate place to me.

If anyone can explain why Jupiter's Great Red Spot is spinning faster and shrinking, please speak up

Mark 85

Re: If anyone can explain why Jupiter's Great Red Spot is spinning faster and shrinking

all bad jokes aside an ice skater spins faster with arms pulled inwards. Something about centripetal force and rotational momentum.

That would seem to be the case. I vaguely remember my high school science teacher explaining it as a large storm system. But he wrote it off his explanation as just a "guess".

Is it possible the larger size of Jupiter compared to Earth not only makes the "storm" bigger but also last longer? Then we need to know why it is red? Is the planet covered in red soil?

BOFH: You'll find there's a company asset tag right here, underneath the monstrously heavy arcade machine

Mark 85

Re: A little power

2- take a photo of the asset number and save it on your desktop for access later.

That doesn't work as the asset manglement types want to see the "real" tag when they do their inventoy.

UK Ministry of Defence apologises – again – after another major email blunder in Afghanistan

The system is at fault, not an admin clerk.

While that's true, the old rule is "crap rolls down hill" and it's usually some poor schmuck at the bottom who takes the blame.

Facebook overpaid FTC fine by up to $4.9bn to protect Zuckerberg, lawsuits allege

Mark 85

Re: "transparency is essential for social media platforms"

Not sure how FB pulled it off, but back in the days of MySpace, most people avoided FB like the plaque. Then in a matter of year or so around the time MySpace started making major changes to it's layout before being sold, most users suddenly showed up on FB. I suspect if FB hadn't been around, we'd be disgusted with MySpace.

Disclaimer.. was a user of MySpace but never was or will be one of FB.

Mark 85

More than likely it is. But too many companies' officers at board level and above seem to think that rules are for the masses and don't apply to them. Their mission is to pocket all the money they can.

It's the end of the world as we know it, and we should feel fine

Mark 85

Re: Does it work though? @Dan 55

Valid points you and the article make on things going obsolete or being "upgraded". As long as there's companies that need to make a profit we'll have these problems. Yes it's ridiculous, it's expensive, and for us in IT it's tedious as hell many times.

No answers here. Companies like Apple, et al, like the "here's a new shiney" even if there's no real improvement. There are those of us who some consider luddites because we don't run out every couple of years and buy new equipment, new software, etc. By "new" these things really aren't but have more stuff and bloat added.

I guess I'm one of those as still running a Gateway PC with Win 7. It works, it's no longer a prime attack surface for miscreants. For the things I do at home, it's all I need.

I'll await the downvotes from those who advocate for "new", "shiney", and insane corporate profits.

SpaceX successfully sends four amateurs into orbit for three-day tour

Mark 85

Re: That's ruined it

The cheering came from SpaceX employees gathered to watch the launch. If you watch earlier launches of Falcon 9s and the Heavy you will hear a lot of the same cheering.

I've wondered about that in the past. Were they told to be there and cheer on cue or did they show up on their own. It almost sounded like someone waved a flag saying "cheer now"... rather inconsistent.

Yes to both questions but such is the nature of exploring solutions and hopefully finding them. As the old saying goes... "some you win, some you lose, others you get rained out". In light of that, let's hope they don't forget to water proof everything.

I found that a very small drop of CA (super glue) "thin" applied with a pointed toothpick to the button worked a charm. After than, never had an problem with her turning off wi-fi.

Italian stuntman flies aeroplane through two motorway tunnels

Mark 85

Re: Wings

Back when the USMC ran operations at the old blimp base at Santa Ana, Calif., the door on each end of the blimp hangers were not permitted to be fully open on both ends. The reason was that pilots often saw it as a challenge to fly through them.

On the bright side... none ever crashed into the hangers. I did see an A-4 fly through one as the doors were wide open for some reason on both ends

The Goodyear blimp used to use the hangers for maintenance and was dwartfed by those hangers (they still stand).

Re: This just in

Declared war.... WWII. Everything since then has a "police action" or something not requiring a declaration. Once a declaration is issued, suddenly treaties of mutual support come into play.

Mark 85

Re: This just in

I'm not so sure of that. It this case it's more like the normal military operational mode. They may have new toys but the mindset of senior officers is almost always "well the last war we fought we did it this way". I heard that one more than few times when I was in Marines in Vietnam.

When I worked in the defense industry after my 4 years in the military

, there was common phrase that we heard from the high ups..."What? We've never done that before!". Followed my much grumbling, refusal to think outside of their little box of experience.

Needless to say, I didn't stay working in defense very long.

Additional note: It was common to say the Marines operated under the rule of "200 years of tradition unhampered by progress". I think that actually applies (change number years as needed) to all branches of the military.

Only 'natural persons' can be recognized as patent inventors, not AI systems, US judge rules

Mark 85

Re: Judge is right

Wouldn't the computer operator and/or data entry person for the AI's algorithm be an "inventor" by using a tool to create it? I see no reason why those people can't put their names instead of the AI program name...

Dead on right. Just like someone gives an engineer a spec and tells them to design the object. AI is just glorified robot though as it doesn't come up with the ideas. I have worked at companies that let the engineer file the patent but the company not the engineer owns the design as the engineer is usually required to assign the rights to the company.

Mark 85

Re: Judge is right

The patent will end up being bought and sold by companies that don't give a **** about "rules"

Or the product will just be "stolen" and produced without anyone getting royalties. I think this is called the Chinese business model.

First Launch? And with cargo?

Seems strange to load up on cargo when they haven't actually had a successful launch. The article doesn't mention any test flights and neither does their site or quick Google. Seems test launches are done for a reason and without cargo.

Next they need to teach monkeys to type - or drive Teslas.

By monkeys... the totally covered in fur ones that toss crap at people or the basically hairless ones who toss crap at people and then sit in back seat and let the car drive itself? I think the later types already do drive Teslas.

Cost would have been what? 5p for an LED?

True that but then there's "testing the LED to qualify it, design and build the holder and circuitry, and then integrate into the craft. Suddenly it becomes rather pricey to go through. Qualifying parts for space ain't cheap.

Re: Don't you just love it ?

It's a Democrat inquiry called by Pelosi to distract from her own failings. She is after all responsible for Congress security.

Err... no. From various Googles as to who in incharge: "It is provided by the sergeants-at-arms of the House and Senate, and by the Capitol Police. The House sergeant-at-arms reports to the House speaker, or Pelosi at the time of the attack. The Senate sergeant-at-arms reports to the Senate majority leader — on Jan. 6, Sen. Mitch McConnell."

Mark 85

I've been watching this BS go on and on by many members of the Republican Party. The questions that no one has asked those leaders are "who are they protecting?" and "why are they fighting this?" Methinks the Republicans doth protest too much and they have much to fear even if it's just the wrath of Trump much less anything they may have done to enable the event of 1/6.

I too am sick of the politics here in the States. It used to be about issues, not personalities and news bites. Or perhaps before the Internet we didn't see the BS that went on?

Re: THREE YEARS!

I'm sorry, but how come this company has been operating for three years?

I'll probably set a record for downvotes but it's possible that the last administration didn't care or perhaps the party was using it for their purposes. With all the crap that's coming out, it seems possible since they had the say as to who was in charge of the FTC.

More cracks found in Russian annex of the International Space Station

the hardware components on the aged Zvezda section [...] will be past their manufacturers' warranty period

All hardware in space has a limited life due to stresses and radiation from the sun and elsewhere. I suspect that this will be a long hard problem to solve especiailly if we're going to look at traveling great distances and taking decades to get there.

Mark 85

Re: Is it time to disconnect?

Good grief, couldn't we do with less stupid nationalistic willy waving?

No. The waving has been going on from very beginning. The space agencies use it to get more money. Even "joint" operations are about money such as the US paying Russia for too long to launch our guys to the ISS.

Sadly, hacking doesn't mean what it used to mean. In the not too distant past, a "hacker" was an IT wisz who could do things beyond the mere mortals who used computers.

Today, it's been demoted to general "not good people". I guess most folks don't understand the word "miscreant".

Re: Damage control at FB

I've seen people sucked into the FB parallel universe and it isn't pretty.

It's going to get a lot worse instead of ever getting better. There's articles out there for "Zoom-like" meetings using animation instead of real faces. No one knows how much they're slurping from those meetings. I would hope that any business that values it's meetings and the info discussed stay the hell away from it.

Mark 85

Hmmm...3 downvotes (at the time of this writing).

Zuck and minions... there's now 4 down votes.
