Zuckerberg wants to create a make-believe world in which you can hide from all the damage Facebook has done

Mark 85

Can take a collection and buy Zuck a one way ticket into space? Please..... There's a few others who should go with him but let's focus on him first.

Assange psychiatrist misled judge over parentage of his kids, US tells High Court

Mark 85

Re: Putting Assange aside.

Assange would kill everybody around him before killing the only person he really cares about - himself.

That also sounds like quite a few types in governments around the world.

First, stunning whistleblower leaks. Now a shareholder lawsuit lands on Zuckerberg's desk

Mark 85

Or, how long would it take to spend a billion bucks....

Depends on how many lawyers he hires.

I saw an article that he and his wife are also being sued by some hired domestic help. Apparently, Zuck and wife are rather nasty people. Bigoted and cheap by calling names and not paying for hours worked.

Facebook's greatest misses: The five nastiest bits from recent leaks

Mark 85

Re: I'm all right, Jack, keep your hands off of my stack

Wall Street is only part of this. The real driver is Zuck's insecurities (remember "The Face Book"?) and being holder of 51% of the shares, he's making a pile of money which maybe feeds his ego.

Mark 85

Maybe it's not the driver but it sure as hell is the megaphone.

Re: facebook moderation is a joke

They claim to stop antivax and other false information being redistributed, but they really don't. It's just zuck talking, there is zero actual action.

I sometimes think that basically he's still mentally a 20-something years old kid who just wanted a web page and still believes in the inherent goodness of humans.... etc. etc. etc.

He's really just moron who allowed people smarter than him and even less ethical to run things.

Off topic a bit... I do note that he had several meetings with Florida Man back when he was still President. Seems like two peas in the same pod... make money no matter who suffers for it.

Mark 85

Re: Figures.

I think humans is the wrong word, as 50% are most likely bot accounts.

Of the users I know, most have more than one account.. a prime and a backup. And then the kids, the cats, dogs, etc. all have at least one.

Re: SpaceX ?

It would be a bit ironic if the they discovered the current problems are due to damage caused by a collision with a Tesla.

Might happen yet. I've read that they expect the Tesla to do two or three orbits before it gets into the problem areas were satellites hang out.

Mark 85

Re: It’s going to L2?

It will need to periodically fire a motor to adjust position. When it runs out of reaction mass, it will start drifting. Sending up more fuel will be interesting.

I just hope they filled the fuel tanks completely. I forget which space mission it was, but the spec called for something like 75% full, but the engineers topped off the tank before launch. Got them quite a bit of extra time.

Facebook sues scraper who sold 178 million phone numbers and user IDs

Mark 85

'Tis a strange beast, indeed this Fecesbook.

I don't have an account nor have I ever. Yet, I note that I get "notifications" from FB about Friends Requests. People (allegedly) that I've never heard of in places I'm not familiar with are all from allegedly women. I suspect that this article explains it all. And not just email to my real addy but also some throwaway accounts. Maybe one of these days I should actually open an account and search myself there and see how many accounts are me?. Nah...that's just opening Pandora's box.

Re: Silly censorship

as Paul H points out above there is no shortage of porn in which the pixelation never occurred

There was a TV doctor show where the main character often said he "needed to go home and download porn as the internet keeps getting filled up with it". The guy was doing his part it seems.

Mark 85

Re: Ask Delphi<...>; no one is actually using it to make decisions.

Are you sure? The Facebook automated systems could be based on it, from behaviour described later in the article...

I was about to suggest the word "yet" be added to the title... But on second and third thought and involving FB, I'm not so sure that it's not already here.

Florida man accused of breaking Mastodon's open-source license with botched social network launch

Mark 85

Re: Mar-a-OhOh

As I recall, Florida Man wanted to kill off the Section 230 of the FCC's rules in order to silence some of his critics. He's now using that as an excuse for staying on some platforms and suing them.

Given his known method of operation about not paying lawyers, among others, I'm surprised he's able to sue anyone.

Facebook may soon reveal new name – we're sure Reg readers will be more creative than Zuck's marketroids

Mark 85

And it nicely describes what social media is doing to peoples lives.

More like "The Anti Social Network™" then. I think El Reg needs to change it's TM description.

Mark 85

Re: It doesn’t need a new name

Zuck is a psychopath. He should be barred from holding any position of power (I’ll not add “or responsibility” because he doesn’t take any)

Maybe he's ready for politics. Seems like that applies to too many of them of late.

Listening to friends and neighbors... some wouldn't have a clue how to go from point "A" to point "B" here in town without their GPS.

As you said, "it's strangely comforting that there are still people trained in how to manage without it."

Share your experience: How does your organization introduce new systems?

Mark 85

One place I worked, the manager ordered some PC's and just dumped them on desks with "go read the manual". No training, no thought. True it was early on but still to expect transition of non-tech types to computers was a huge leap. If it hadn't been for a few of tech nerd types (early days of PC's... standard was terminal to the mainframe) the whole company would have crashed.

Other places, things came from the top (board room). Training varied and any software was pretty random at times. For example, some used Word, others used some now long gone word processing like Word Perfect.

The last place, was best. Ideas came from all over. Test teams of users and IT types would try software out. Some went straight to the dumpster, others, were acquired.

Engineers investigating iffy solar array latch on NASA's Lucy as probe begins long journey to Trojan asteroids

Mark 85

You're right. I mentally spaced things a bit. I'll go stand in the naughty corner for a bit.

Mark 85

When I first heard the name some time ago, I thought it referenced the Peanuts character. Looks like I was probably right as Lucy (the comic character) had a way of messing up the best efforts of everyone else.

I am curious though as space is a vacuum so no wind to shift the array.

What do you mean you gave the boss THAT version of the report? Oh, ****ing ****balls

Maybe modify a bit: "Couldn't find a report in his own in-tray with both hands and a flashlight." ?

In Zuck's world, there won't be any lawyers as they'll all be busy watching the screen scroll.

Big Brother

Re: A dream that nobody wants except for the tech giants

That is FB's taking their system to the extreme. They want all eyes on their platforms 24-7. Thus, nothing will ever be made, transported, or in shops as there won't be any shops with everyone scrolling FB all the time.

Raises a few questions.. FB is built on "eyes" and advertising. If everyone is on FB, no one is working. So without a workforce, who will supply the products that provide their advertising revenue? Come to think of it, who will provide the work necessary to keep FB running?

This isn't well thought out, IMO.

Icon: Because this is FB and they're watching everything.

Missouri governor demands prosecution of reporter for 'decoding HTML source code' and reporting a data breach

Mark 85

That's what many folks to live there still or those that have moved out call it.

Mark 85

Which should be the only reason for any Highway Patrol to actually have a Digital Forensic Unit

Seems all states have these state police forces. They just call them different names. In Missouri's case, who knows. When I lived there it was real effort to figure out what agency did what to who.

Boeing's Calamity Capsule might take to space once again ... in the first half of 2022

Mark 85

Re: "oxidizer and moisture interactions"…

No... the movie was "Deal of the Century". I had to look it up as all I remembered was the washing the airplane and someone screaming about the idiots who didn't think of rain.

Mark 85

Re: "oxidizer and moisture interactions"…

On the other hand, while I don't know specifically where Boeing produces the Starliner, of course much of their production is in the Seattle area, which wouldn't give them much more excuse for not grokking humidity (pun intended).

Back in the day, I remember an engineer telling me to "not worry about that, it works fine here in the lab". Considering the lab and all the buildings were climate controlled, the product worked fine. Once out in the world, they had serious issues due to weather. In this case it was just small voltage regulator.

Seems there was a movie where they developed an aircraft and no one thought about weather. They couldn't launch their airplane until it dried out after washing it.

I think that one of the rites of passage for any IT type is to fat finger the keyboard once. Usually, the boss will accept that but not the second time it's done.

Mark 85

Re: Sun kit

As I'm routinely surprised by the differences between what I wrote and what I intended.

I think that's normal. Happens to everyone whether writing commands, school papers, or even comments to El Reg. Fat fingering a keyboard and not catching it is pretty normal. I learned to have someone take a look at any thing in the way of scripts, programs, that involved the OS.

The planet survived six hours without Facebook. Let's make it longer next time

Mark 85

Re: Without Facebook...

You're confusing "friends" with "acquaintances".

Mark 85

It sounds like some poor Facebook Network Admin had a similar moment - but on a much bigger scale!

This won't be the last time it happens. Humans are fallible and thus, the devices they build are also fallible. Too many people don't believe this as they think/believe they are infallible.

Mark 85

There's one angle in this overlooked... tech is great for almost everything. But when it fails as in FB's case and fail to the point that everything is locked down, it's time to re-assess. I've seen a slow but steady movement to the "secure" doorlocks. The physical key is no longer there. Computer failure, power outages will effectively lock everyone out of everything.

It just seems that rational thinking and fully exploring the "what if" side of things has fallen into to disfavor. We're seeing this in many facets in our lives from cars, houses, buildings, even aircraft. We're headed to one of the armageddon scenarios from the science fiction of days past.

As side note.... Why couldn't FB not recovered and just go away leaving their data centers and offices as monuments to blind reliance on tech?

Facebook, Instagram finally end days of uptime by returning to some downtime

Mark 85

It's Facebork...

I'm not sure we should believe it was "configuration" errors. Quite possible it was intentional to a) get attention. Or b) to install some extra secret sypware for their use in all those little icons we find almost every webpage these days. Given it's FB and Zuck who wants all the power he can get, I'll let others figure out what he's up to.

US nuclear submarine bumps into unidentified underwater object in South China Sea

Mark 85

Re: How loud is crashing a sub?

There must be some kind of stealthy active signal visualization for avoiding large objects.

If you invent one, you'll end up a nice chunk of change and you and the family would probably have some serious protection from the military.

Mark 85

Re: Hitting a container?

Do subs hover so close to the sea buttom?

Sometimes. If they're doing "secret" stuff like tapping an underwater cable or collecting a sensor or an "interesting" bit of wreckage. Then again, during WWII, there's many stories of subs gently settling on the bottom for various reasons like waiting for a target to get close or hiding from depth charges.

Mark 85

Re: Other scenarios

Per Martinusher (above): This might explain the current scarcity of shipping containers.

I would agree as Occams Razor might involved here.

Then it was basically a single point of failure... a single system failure at that which drug everything down. Perhaps they need a human to sit inside the door to open it just in case something like this happens again?

On other hand, I wonder how many divorces, babies, etc. will result from this outage by folks who finally had to talk to each other instead of posting? Sort of like a power outage that lasts a day or so.

I think this icon is appropriate for them.... They should self apply it about 20 times with a sledge hammer.
