Yeah, even MS isn't (usually) that stuck up their own ass. That displays an almost breathtaking amount of conceit by Google.

Google conceited? Just because they think they own the world? Hmm... I'm hearing a knock at the door and someone yelling "Open up! Google Police!!!!"

Re: Windows 95 was more masterful marketing

Add to that... MS pulled a lot of sneaky backstabbing things to thwart rival companies which didn't hurt MS but it sure killed off the competition.

Re: Merlin 66

I think it had to do with the changing tactical and strategic needs as the war moved on in Europe. The air war was being won and the military needed ground attack aircraft as well as bomber escorts. Best to modify what they had and were building than to design a new aircraft.

Tesla driver charged with vehicular manslaughter after deadly Autopilot crash

Mark 85

Re: Good

While that's true, the drivers are the willing participants. So, there's plenty of blame to go around.

Mark 85

What does "auto" mean in the context of auto pilot.....is it short for "automobile" or is it short for "automatic".

Either way is mis-leading. To most folks, "auto pilot" is airplanes use and make things easier on the human pilots.. i.e.: the plane flies itself is what the a/c industry says. Maybe not take off and landings so much yet but even that is out there. So, tell people their car has autopilot and guess what? They'll equate it an aircraft system.

Mark 85

In the worst case, given that the design is now established; how much of a delay would producing a new satellite to the same specifications entail?

Would they duplicate the exact design? Or would they improve just things like wiring harnesses and other equipment?

Answer those two and you'll have your answer. Since it's a government program I would expect increased costs and more time needed.

Mark 85

Generally, we've been filling up low orbit and to some extent high orbit for decades without giving it much thought. It seems like it's only been in the last 10 years or so where we are having more and more launches every month. The sats that the Musky one is launching 50 or so at a time is also a problem... a big problem.

While it's true that what goes up will (for the most point) come back down but that's a function of us sitting back and waiting unless someone comes up with a cheap and reliable way to de-orbit all the junk and dead sats.

I suspect that in not too many years that space will be off-limits to us Earthlings since the risk of collision will be too high.

Re: Hmm

Since they have a policy why not enforce it ffs.

Simple answer, money. They'd have to hire tons of fact checkers and then follow up. Much like FB, it's cheaper to ignore for the most part, hire a token crew, and the benefit is pocketing the profits.

Mark 85

Zuck should follow his lead.....

FB is a bigger fluster cluck. The catch is, he still holds the majority of stock. But go he must. Changing the name is pointless but Zuck thinks the name change is meaningful (for some value of "meaningful").

Mark 85

Re: Priorities

Way back around the time of Sputnik (which is still up there), no one considered that low orbit or really any oribit of earth would become crowded with junk. Instead of actively deorbiting things like boosters, dead satellites, etc. It's now become a real problem. Even the Musk satts are creating problems and not just for astronomers.

Space... a real mess. Maybe the final frontier will soon be blocked.

James Webb Space Telescope gets all shook up – launch delayed again

It does make one wonder about this. With all the delays and issues this sounds a bit like CYA on someone's part. If the thing has problems once in orbit, the "Clang" can be blamed.

Russia blows up old satellite, NASA boss 'outraged' as ISS crew shelters from debris

Mark 85

Re: Burning down the jungle gym

This could be one reason for them blowing up a satellite. They do want to quit the ISS and the sooner the better. On the other hand, we have Musk who's really trying to make a solid wall around earth with every launch of his TV satellites.

I'm beginning to believe that the mindset of many countries is "If we can't have space to ourselves, no one else can use it either".

I'm waiting now to see who's next to blow up their own satellite.

Indeed, it was. It was a fun time in many ways before Bill decided to take over the world and "own' all the PC's and servers and either buy a software company and let it die or kill off anything not that was not his.

There's many of us who are still using Win 7. It's stable and not crap shoot on what works and doesn't work. And many of us are still using legacy "buy once, use forever" software instead of bug ridden subscription stuff.

Oregon city courting Google data centers fights to keep their water usage secret

Mark 85

"... Not to be outdone, Google, in its 2021 Water Stewardship whitepaper [PDF], says by 2030 it "will replenish 120 per cent of the water we consume, on average, across our offices and data centers … where we operate.""

So where are they getting the 20% more water to return then they draw out? Not like they can get it out of thin air. I realize that many of these places use the water, some dump the return into the river, others it evaporates. But still... where's the 20% coming from? I don't think it just going to magically appear.

Google's 'Be Evil' business transformation is complete: Time for the end game

Mark 85

This reminds me of an old drinking song.

Way back in my youth, there was a bawdy song to the tune of "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean". I'll not repeat it here but the chorus was "My God how the money rolls in. Rolls in. Rolls in." Seems to apply to many tech companies.

Way back when, we remember that Google's motto was "do no evil". Then they started making money... big money. The corruption and rot set in. So here we are today. As someone earlier posted... "beware of Greeks bearing gifts" and another saying "beware of Geeks bearing gifts". Seems to be sound advice.
