Intel applies hobnailed boot to countries where its men and women workers aren't paid the same

They didn't take the easy way and improve profits?

I'm surprised that they just didn't lower the male pay to match the female pay. The stockholders would love what that would do to the bottom line.

The most annoying British export since Piers Morgan: 'Drones' halt US airport flights

Mark 85

The only problem with that is the concept of "low cost". Guidance systems aren't cheap. Maybe AA guns with flak? Oh wait... the stuff will fall somewhere so maybe we just need to build a wall around all the airports.

Build the wall... around your DNS settings, US govt IT staff urged by Homeland Security amid domain hijackings

This is a joke right?

And then when they get back to work they'll be in trouble for not reading emails and complying. The agency is telling them they have 10 days and will be held accountable.

I suppose that the political types thought that since the government was shutdown, the miscreants of the world would also be shutdown. Nice to know that there are top people in charge... top!

You heard the latest Chinese CRISPRs? They are real: Renegade bio-boffin did genetically modify baby twins

Mark 85

Some reports indicate that the "tender embrace" could be a firing squad. Any gene modifications/experiments should be rigorously monitored as there may be (or will be) unexpected consequences that could be disastrous and these should be done on test animals first just in case. The ethics of using animals in testing is another argument though....

Google becoming Big Brother...

I thought they were pretty much there with not allowing downloads from certain web businesses they own like Youtube. But now there's the doublespeak about "privacy" and "a better experience"... hmm... for whom, exactly? The user or Google? We already know the answer to "for whom".

UK.gov plans £2,500 fines for kids flying toy drones within 3 MILES of airports

Mark 85

Re: Droning on

I'm sorry, but I don't think that's credible - there must have been something credible out there, but I suspect that they were more focused on finding the idiot controlling the thing than filming it.

If there was actually a drone, could it have been flown by someone directed to fly it? They want more "security", more "power" and so this would give the excuse they need. High profile, lots of unhappy and pissed off people venting about "drones". If, in reality, there wasn't a drone then it might be more likely that the drone was a ruse for more control/power.

Re: Pot, meet Kettle.

If, as is supposed to be the case, an MP's or Congresscritter's "business" emails etc are supposed to be "safe" from snooping by their own governments* (arranged over here in Right-Pondia by the Rt Hon Tony Bliar, not sure who arranged it for the Left-Pondians), what happens when the parasite** leaves government service and becomes a normal citizen again?

I suspect that the "observing" stays in play much like it is the rest of us. I also believe that being "safe" is a red herring. The 3 letter agencies do have self interest to attend to and watching what the politicos are saying, thinking it's offline, gives them an edge. As for "normal" again, they want you to think they're "normal" again and have no influence.

Re: Apologies

No apologies are due because HRH always has the right of way. Shouldn't there have been a load of footman running ahead to clear the road and make sure all the peasants were properly off the road and bowing down?

Over here across the pond, the Secret Service ensures the roads are clear of cars. I would have though that HRH would get the same treatment.

My father referred to Americans as being "Heinz 57".... basically a mix of everything in everyone. Yes, I'm one also as was he. He did a genealogy of the so called family tree and it looked more like a massive fur ball instead of the nice straight lines one sees elsewhere. I suspect that most of us are like that with links going all over the world.

Re: While I agree the speaker of the house shouldn't leave the US

Petty? I think that fits. If I recall correctly from all the media hype and mixed messages, he's taken a trip or two on AF1 for what some would call "campaign" purposes. But for her to try to do such a trip was just plain stupid on her part. No one is taking the high road nor being a statesman. It's all petty politics with the citizens and those laid off as the pawns.

Seems we have a dysfunctional government these days much like some other countries. Wish the children running things (here in the US and elsewhere) would either grow up or go sit in the naughty corner.

I have a list using a notepad that sits on my desk at my house. The last page of said notepad. For "backup", there's a copy in my fireproof lockbox in the closet. Not too paranoid, right? If the house burns down, the lockbox should be safe although I'll probably have bigger problems than not having a password at had.

What benefits do we actually get from projects like CERN?

We don't or won't know until we experiment and gain knowledge. For all we know, the movement of the earth's magnetic north could be the result of CERN's experiments. Or it might not be. That's the beauty of science and research or as quaintly put decades ago: "To go where no man has gone before".

There's upsides and down sides to research but if we don't try then that's a failure.

US prosecutors: Hey, you know how we said 'net gambling was OK? LMAO, we were wrong

- American casino owners having to repay all the money they've earned online in the past

Fat chance of that happening.

- Antigua getting any settlement money, ever

See answer above,

- Campaign contributions by gambling interests increasing sharply in the near future?

This is a definite yes....

Given that fearless leader still has some interest in gambling establishments, if Congress puts this in a spending bill, it'll probably be signed off pretty quick. Hmmm.. might this be a ploy to pass a budget and end the shutdown???? The Bible belt may come into play though and try to fight it.

Re: Accusations

I grow weary of this point-me-to-a-target-and-expect-me-to-rage climate that we live in.

Such are the times we live in. It's infiltrated all levels of government and even the population. All we can hope for is sanity to return or a very entertaining one last light show as the countries around the world go into destruct mode.

Googlers to flood social media with tales of harassment in bid to end forced arbitration

Mark 85

Well, for a start, I would assume it means that vendor staff are actually employed by the vendor on the vendors contract.

Exactly and thus subject to different rules. So if a contractor complains, they'll probably just have their contract pulled and end up unemployed. Job-shopping/Contract Work has many advantages for someone willing to take such a position, but job security, benefits, and the ability to file complaints about the contracting company aren't part of the benefits. Contracting firms are more likely to just get rid of anyone who complains.

Google hands out roses to preferred Android MDM vendors

Mark 85

The endorsed firms are also required to spring for Google-provided training for their sales and support staff and keep up-to-date documentation and user guides for Android admins.

With sales/marketing staff being a profit center and support being an expense, how many companies will actually have their techs get the training? I've seen more than a few places send some techs for training and then when they leave (better job or made redundant) the new kids get no training. The other wonderment is it's Google. How long will they actually support this?

Mark 85

Perhaps making technology more durable and reliable may eventually take priority over making it “smart”.

This would depend on who's actually running product development and design. If it's engineering then yes, reliability will come to the fore. If it's marketing than whatever is the latest buzz phrase will push the design. I saw this years ago with a simple voltage regulator development. Marketing decided instead of having several adjustment potentiometers for adjustment, they wanted a "wonderful" control. One dial that could only be turned one way to increase the "wonderful". Many of us in engineering never did sort out if they were serious or just having fun.

Stainless Steel?

I'm puzzled by the use of stainless steel skin on the BFR (or whatever it's called now) capsule. Isn't there a severe weight penalty for using the stuff? I do recall some aircraft using it, but using it for spacecraft seems like the weight would be a big downside.

Yeah, thanks for big-upping this asshole's ego.

I think that's a side effect of the plod and the prosecutor's self-ego enhancing statement. All prosecutor's seem to do this as if to show that they are smarter than the crims and to justify their time on the case. It also hides the fact that most of them have little clue about all things computer related.

IOW, it's bluster for the masses.
