Tracing paper? More like grade ZZZ which basically a stick with bark cut from the nearest tree and wrapped in a piece of paper. The ZZ grade is paper but does have large chunks of wood in it.

I think making the "big" mistake makes us better at our jobs. We all have our "oh crap" moments and most of us learn from them. Most bosses usually understand only if we can recover from the mistake without too much permanent damage being done and never make that or a similar mistake again.
Maybe it's me but I don't get why sensitive info has to be on public facing servers. How hard can it be to move the stuff from the "public" side to private servers that on not web facing? I can't think of any hi-tech answer other than make a connection once a day (or use, ahem, some sort of magnetic based media).
The breaktrough moment was when the Brits realized that the Germans left them bread crumbs. The closing line was the give away which was always "Heil Hitler". Once someone realized this, the rest was easy by comparison. Still, IMO it was a massive and great achievement..

Really? You don't get it? Look at two things.. his base and at what he does. He tweets, he tosses out whatever is on his mind that will obscure any real issues. Hell, he's still ranting over Clinton and others including McCain. The guy is a good example of applied misdirection.
Once upon a time in the not too distant past, there was a lot of self censorship going on in the news world. They might show the scene afterwards, but maybe just some blood pools at most. Not live on the scene as it happens stuff, no bodies., no gunfire, etc. Some things were just too horrific for them to show.
Somewhere, something changed. Ratings? The "get there and cover it first" mentality? Or maybe even our media that makes the perps "celebrities" as such.

That's a big part of the problem and like various "challenges" of late on FB and other platforms, mass murder has become one. Hit a new high number of bodies and someone will be thinking of a way to "do better" and win instant fame.
Perhaps the answer is cover the story but never, ever mention the miscreants name? Perhaps, closed trials with the perp is "Mr X." or "Miss Y"? Not sure that would go over well in any society other than some of the more "controlled" (for lack of a better term) countries.
No matter what anyone comes with a potential answer it still is going to be a tough problem to solve. Media coverage is one thing but videos or even live coverage from the media while it's going on is bound to spark copycats.
I will note, that banning guns isn't the answer. Remember Oklahoma City and the truck load of fertilizer/diesel blowing up the federal building? Those who want to do harm will find a way.

Be careful with that one. It's a loaded weapon of self-destruction in disguise. At some point, someone will as you to "take a look at these plans for our extra room" or "can you help me make some plans for "x:" where 'x' is whatever they want to do.
So where did the money transfer to? Being "cybercash" in the sense of there's no real money (bills or coins) did it just disappear or go to some foreign company? Has anyone looked into if the systems were hacked and taken over by outsiders? Too many questions but the judge sounds reasonable.
They all seem to be lit by dim, pointless standard lamps.
Because some designer, consultant, or exec type thinks that hotel rooms need to be "home-like". But then it's not "home", it's a freaking hotel/motel. Give me a bed to sleep on, a table or desk, and a way to turn the lights on to work and completely off to sleep. Ambiance, or their version of it, is crap.
I wonder how many more productive hours were done at work, school, ... as a result.
Well there was answer on the kids part. for the productive hours at work... probably a bit less and people got up and gathered around the coffee machine (or tea or whatever) and whined while swapping all the gossip verbally and repeating it to the late ones showing up instead of typing it once and copying all their friends.
Then again, many may have just sat there staring into space not knowing what to do.
I wonder if they did a more in depth explanation to the cash source for FB? If I were an advertiser spending money on them for ad delivery, I'd sure as hell want to know what happened... for how long... and then I'd auditing my bills for ads that were supposedly delivered during the outage. Then again, in many ways, FB is more secretive than the NSA.
Politics and business as usual then. It's never a good mix as too many pockets get greased, too many "leaders" get b***hurt and make decisions based on feelings instead of logic. Wars have even been started on this type of stuff by those in power. Only in a fictional world will every one ever get along and work for the common good instead of personal gain. I'm not an idealist or communist but some feuds between governments just seem way out of proportion and rather bizarre at times.

Right... "forced" is the operative word. The fact that every major website dumps tons of tracking cookies, Google knows more about you than anyone, and FB tracks you even if you're not a member means what? We don't need laws to be spied on, only corporations.
Well, it's still down here on southern end of the PNW. What I'm seeing is people walking about and actually seeing where they're going. No smartphone stuck in their face. And, shock of shocks, they're actually talking to each other.
I'd think if it lasts more than a day or two, there might be an increase in anxiety.
Anecdotal: I have seen signs of withdrawal when I was out and about. One younger person (well... younger than me) was checking her phone every couple of minutes in grocery checkout line. So I told her it's down pretty much everywhere. She stopped, smiled, said "thanks" and put the phone away. We then had an actual conversation.
I guess that explains why all is mostly silent out of Washington, DC. Yes, I'm being snarky but can I add: "every dark cloud has a silver lining"?
I do feel for those who rely on the other services though for contact with relatives and friends, especially with the heavy weather moving east here in the States.
I remember a crash of a helicopter several decades ago (it from the squadron I was in). Most of the ground based witnesses said the thing was flying and the rotors were turning but one witness took a picture as the chopper was maneuvering all over the sky. The picture showed the chopper upside down and the tail rotor and main rotor not moving. The pic was picked up by the press and in their eyes, case closed. Fast film and camera speed it turned out as the evidence was a hydraulic failure of the flight control system. So eyewitnesses and even carmera coverage are taken with a grain of salt.
An event such as you've recalled illustrates very well the value of having on-the-ball pilots in a cockpit.
Pilots need to be well trained and have flight experience thus most airlines require a senior pilot on each flight. There's an old saying that goes: "The first person at the crash site is always the pilot.". I think some pilots have forgot about this after some news stories about being drunk, drugged, etc. In this case, it's probably more like experience. Even a senior pilot would not have much flight time in these planes.
I really hope that if it is demonstrated that Boeing and FAA took "shortcuts" to allow the Max fly and be sold as an identical 737 replacement, the fines will be adequate to the deaths toll - and not only of US citizens.
Boeing will get sued. The FAA won't even though Boeing followed the FAA rules that industry lobbies for. If you need an example that everyone here can relate to, look at the FCC.
Depends on a lot of factors as Boeing and Airbus do have some joint projects and there's lobbyists, etc. who come out of the woodwork. More worrying is will Boeing now push out a patch that works or just different bugs? The only sure way to tell is require the Boeing board to fly on the plane.
Add a bit here since I saw no reference.... "Delete the data after it's been accessed X number of times?". If not, then why would they keep it? This applies to both the unencrypted file upload as well as the encrypted file. Given the paranoia about NSA, et al, I think this should be a valid concern.
Why not? If it works for a given purpose there's no need for "new and shiny". As far as POS machines, given what's happening with Win10 updates, no business will want their equipment going down for updates (during business hours) and possibly not coming back up.
This does seem almost to be the equivalent of one going on vacation and leaving the front door open and upon return shoot the nice neighbor who walked by, closed and locked it. Rather than fixing the problem and saying "thank you" (at a minimum) someone gets their knickers in a twist and rolls out the FBI and will most likely toss a sueball. What a world this has become.
