Pinterest, Yammer scramble to patch login thievery headaches

Mark 85

Users of Yammer iOS version 6.4.25.850 and Pinterest for iPhone v4.5 both need to upgrade to skirt potential login token-thieving problems.

Well, if it doesn't upgrade itself, I'm believing that most of the affected users won't get the upgrade. Given what I've seen, they'll all be "too busy" or "I didn't hear that"....

Instead of public sector non-jobbery, Martha, how about creating real entrepreneurs?

No problem...

Why hasn't Britain (or even Europe?) produced a Google or a Facebook yet?

We'll give you Facebook but you have to take Zuck as part of the deal. Fair enough?

Operation Redstone: Microsoft preps double Windows update in 2016

Mark 85

If they go with a new OS every 2 years and no LTS, they'll go bust pretty quick. I really don't believe businesses will tolerate having to upgrade that quickly. For some, upgrading is a monumental (both in time and labor) effort. Now it they come up with a install much like an upgrade.. push the button and next the next morning it's up and running, it might work. But I don't ever see it as being that easy, especially when apps need to be installed and usually set up.

NetApp layoffs loom as biz 'operationalizes strategy', 'prioritizes investments'

Mark 85

Genius!!

We are confident in our strategy and product portfolio. As discussed on our Q3 earnings call, we are prioritizing investments to drive growth and differentiate NetApp, within the boundaries of our business model. Our focus is on operationalizing our strategy to take full advantage of the opportunity in front of us.

As one who regards much of PR department statements as BS, this bit of bafflegab is pure unadulterated genius. They should bag this and sell it as fertilizer.

Astronomers battle plague of BLADE-WIELDING ROBOTS

Mark 85

It could be done.. but it wouldn't be cheap to produce and thus limit their market and, most importantly, their profit.

Mark 85

Slippery Slope Time Again

Ok.. a lawnmower might be innocuous usage. But what is the next intrusion of bandwidth? Someone doing something more powerful and not just interfering with radio telescopes? There's a reason the spectrum has been divided up and regulated. iRobot seems to have no regard for others usage of the spectrum. I would hope the FCC will do the proper thing and quash this.

Not all lawns are rectangular. The buried wire/cable is a great option, but most homeowners don't want the hassle of ripping up the perimeter, planting the wire/cable, and restoring the landscaping. And for many it's an expensive proposition to have someone else do it.

iRobot might think they have a one-size-fits-all solution but they have their "greed" blinders on and aren't thinking this through.

Turkey PM bans Twitter, YouTube as 'tools of terrorist propaganda'

Mark 85

While what you say is essentially correct about maybe why it should have been pulled, there's a problem. The western press has posted "pre-death" pictures of various daesh hostages. There was a Pulitzer winner who photographed an NVA being shot by a South Vietnam officer... the list goes on.

The reason it was pulled probably had nothing to do with family members feelings but with politics. Turkey has been shouting for years that there's nothing nasty going on in their country while persecuting the Kurds and denying it.

The real issue is not that they wanted it pulled... it's why. Just like say, the Sauds regulate what's out there by rote of jail or lashings. Suppression of the news is more common than we think.

Microsoft sounds 100-day DOOM KLAXON for Windows Server 2003

Mark 85

Why replace it indeed....

Small businesses and even some big ones will resist just like they're resisting XP. There's a lot of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." mentality. Small places, such as doctor's offices and even accountants feel they're locked into legacy stuff and/or just don't want to spend the cash. I suspect that at some point down the road apiece, life is going to get very 'interesting' for them and the panic phone calls will start.

Samsung's bend blame blast: We DEMAND a Galaxy S6 Edge do-over

Mark 85

Re: I never thought that sitting on any phone was a good idea

That's all well and good and I agree with you. But people are sometimes not all that smart. I've had to replace at least one laptop because someone feel asleep with it and rolled over on it. As for the file cabinet on the server... never seen that. But one place I went to had a coffee machine on top of a server. A lady in one place had a fountain with running water on top of her tower.

I've seen phones jammed into a back pocket that by all the laws of mechanics and physics should never have fit in there to begin with. There's entirely too many people don't think. They think some government agency or some company will do the thinking and pass a law or build a product that will survive their dumbness.

Don't be stiffed by spies, stand up to Uncle Sam with your proud d**k pics – says Snowden

Mark 85

Very sad....

I find it very sad of affairs that those interviewed had no clue about who Snowden is. I do wonder if that was a random sampling or were the ones who knew who Snowden is tossed out? But I digress. It's not like this hasn't been in the news. I guess most folks are so wrapped up in themselves, everything else in the country and the world doesn't exist.

I know there's the "Me" generation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_generation) that's raised kids and have a pretty good idea that they'll turn out like their parents. It just seems appalling that no one gave a crap until "selfies" were mentioned. It's beyond disheartening to watch this country go to hell in a handbasket and all anyone would think about is "is there dinner served on this trip?"

Microsoft drops Do Not Track default from Internet Explorer

Mark 85

Re: No

The advertisers are making the assumption that since it's default, no one ever checks it. OTOH, can they positively say that the user didn't look, and said "ah... good. They checked the box for me.". Let's face it, advertisers are weasels and assume that ads add to our "user experience".... which is pure BS from where I sit.

Mark 85

While what you say is all well and good and in a perfect world it might work that way. However, those that track and ignore the "Do not track" are probably missing the "ethic's gene".

Go back a bit, to when anyplace you bought something from automatically added you to their mailing list and promptly sold it to 3-rd party folks in order to "enhance your internet experience" with spam. Some laws were passed and those things had to be "opt in" instead of "opt out" (if the "out" option was even available. So.. they marketing types promptly complied and added check boxes so you could opt-in for spam. A short time later, the boxes were "pre-checked" because they just knew you were looking forward to a inbox full of their (and their 3-rd party buddies') spam. On some sites, those check boxes are well buried.

The point is... pass some laws and advertisers, etc. will find a work around. After all they'll tell you, most people want advertising. The rational I heard one time was "the Super Bowl" experience. One helluva lot of folks watch that game here in the US just for the ads. The game is irrelevant to them.

This just isn't about ads, this about privacy. I'm sure Google ignores the "do not track" and can willingly target (in a carpet bomb sense) you with a zillion ads.

Devil

Hmm... will our votes be tracked???? Enquiring minds and all that.

Nope, not the user's but the advertisers and those who profit from them. DNT has become a joke anyway as most sites ignore it. It's just a feel good setting.... '

Mark 85

Maybe she's representing the wrong people?

Banning books... this more in line with certain Middle Eastern fanatics than the US (Yeah.. history says we've tried to, just like the Catholic Church did and others) at this point in time. What's next, burning non-believers at the stake under that familiar cry of "think of the children it will save". I would, however, be surprised she suggested banning the Quran because it might incite a jihad. (Yeah, I know but I'm making a point.) The woman is a complete and utter moron about the real world. But then again, her home turf is, after all, Berkeley.

This is the stuff that a certain German leader (avoiding Godwin's law), certain churches, certain socialist/Marxist countries and others have done.

This totally goes against everything I was taught. Maybe banning Feinstein would be a better option. I'm beyond disgusted.

Dot-com intimidation forces Indiana to undo hated anti-gay law

Mark 85

Error in the translation..

Several sources report that what they said was They'll serve anyone walking in, but not cater a LBGT wedding as they don't believe in "gay marriage"... The average response was "who'd want a pizza parlor to cater a wedding".

Conveniently, the whole thing was apparently misquoted about the time the GoFundMe was set up... So is there an intentional deception? A stupid knee-jerk? Or just plain bigotry? I think it's a stupid knee-jerk to get this pizza joint some Streisand Publicity.

All this raises an interesting conundrum though... the Indianapolis 500 and their "signature song" which was until 2014 performed by Jim Nabors... who, per many articles, is gay. Which also makes me wonder how many race team sponsors will withhold sponsorship? Either way the sponsor gets free advertising, but the team only gets the money of the sponsor's name is on the car.

But yeah, the law still stinks. Come to think of it, when I lived in Illinois and Ohio, we always avoided Indiana like the plague if we could.
