Lapider les corneilles! French Patriot Act faces growing opposition

Mark 85

Re: Lowest Denominator, not even "common"

If so it could make privacy protections in the EU a race to the bottom.

Indeed it already is. What I see is "legalizing" what's already being done. The cases making the media were/are, at least from the media reports, variations of old-fashioned police work. They get a tip (usually an FB post) on someone and then investigate.

I would think that if they want these invasive acts to be approved by the general public, a bit of PR would be involved. Such as, we found via the data collection..... But they don't.

UN: E-waste's 42 million tonnes represents 'valuable' (and ‘toxic’) urban mine

Mark 85

This whole thing about e-waste is interesting and seems to be fraught with scare tactics. I see they're lumping different appliances including vacuum cleaners and laundry appliances into the mix. By the time, say a washer is stripped of the steel and motor, which they do, there's not much left in the way of electronic componentry. Even toasters are now tossed into the scrap metal pile for melting down and re-use.

Given what they're calling "e-waste", it looks to me like they're trying to inflate the numbers....

Mark 85

Re: "11.8 million tonnes from washing machines"

Compared to anything else, I would think that a lump of concrete in an old washing machine is a relatively minor issue.

Re: Lucky Man

Usually? I really don't think so. Go do some research and tell us again that this is "usually" the case? And back that up with data.

Mark 85

Re: He did not commit the other crime

Can't the cop run after the suspect rather than just shooting them?

Seriously? You've never seen the local cops in the US then. Most, of them couldn't even run into Dunkin' Donuts for a freebie. They'd need the drive-up.

Mark 85

Re: He did not commit the other crime

Can the police not be trained to shoot at his lower leg, AIR, the cop fired about 8 shots.

The short answer is "no".

The long answer is reasons....

Police and military are trained to aim for the "center of mass"... i.e.: the chest. Hitting a leg of someone running is tough and increases the chance of a richochet.

The other problem is training. In the military, marksmanship is practiced, maybe not as often as it should be, but it is practiced. Cops... budgets don't allow for it. When there is training, it's paper targets (static) at close range and limited in the amount of live fire.

Shooting and hitting a target isn't as easy as the movies make it. Both perps and cops can expend a pile of rounds and never hit anything. The whole mess is exactly that, a mess.

Apple will cut down 36,000 acres of forest in 'conservation scheme'

Mark 85

Re: How Green is my Apple @dorsetknob

Go do a little research first before shooting yourself in the foot. Paper products come from trees raised for that purpose and are replanted. Then go research recycling and see what's generated by the process because to recycle, the paper has to be bleached and re-processed. Once done, get back to us. Recycling really isn't "green" no matter what you learned from Sesame Street. The enegy input and the waste products are worse cutting and turning fresh trees into paper.

Mark 85

Re: Trees are a crop

Have an upvote for logic about paper and trees. New paper generates less toxins than recycling (dioxins amongst others) and it's renewable which should make the Greens feel better except for the fanatics who think that cutting down any tree (even a dead one) is bad.

Lawyer: Cops dropped robbery case rather than detail FBI's StingRay phone snoop gizmo

Mark 85

Re: Loophole

The crims don't have to pay attention. Their attorneys do and you can bet your bippy they are paying attention. I don't think this is first case dropped and it won't be the last. I wonder like others, where will the line be drawn? A single murderer? Serial killer? Massive terrorist attack?

The problem is, this will soon be common knowledge, if it's not already. So how long will the FBI, etc. play this game? Or will just pull the equipment back and tell the local police to go screw themselves?

Ah questions and more questions with every new reveal....

Tale of 2 cyber-confabs: Govts, nerds on one side. Shock hotel room searches on the other

Mark 85

What else did one expect?

Governments want the control of their citizens and non-citizens. Doesn't matter which government as they all want this control. The voice of dissent for privacy and security are ignored and not heard by the governments nor businesses.

Perhaps, someday, when enough businesses have had their customer base stolen and enough customers turn away from the internet like it's a bad part of town...maybe. But until that day, we as users of the internet and online customers are f**ked. And lack of privacy AND security will get worse before it gets better.

That's right: FBI agents can't pretend to be ISP repairmen to search homes without a warrant

Mark 85

One might hope that this will send a signal and perhaps even the warrantless online searches will be ruled as unconstitutional. But I doubt it. Those are hidden by weasel words such as "metadata"... "finding the terrorists", etc. They're not physical. Yet, there's a gray area. We'd all like to see cyber-criminals stopped but there's that line that's been stomped on repeatedly.

I saw one "plan" (youtube) where the booster would separate, flip and fire the engine(s) for a retro burn. They just have to get it going fast enough to start dropping and heading back the way they came. As the earth rotates (600 mph I believe at the Cape), it'll shorten the distance by some miles, not many, but it makes it closer). After retro, the thing flips again on the way down to touchdown at point of launch. Rather complex if you ask me, but I'm not a rocket scientist.

So it will be proclaimed that the community's wishes are for the board members to increase their staff, hold more meetings in exotic places, have the latest in luxury cars and accommodations. US Navy's LOCUST DRONE CANNON is like death SWARMED up

Mark 85

Re: Reading this has chilled me to the core…

Now that you've bashed the hell out of the US, how about doing the same for others? Such as the Deash? Taliban? Guerrilla warfare has changed the way wars are fought. Go back to WWII (actually go back as far as you'd like) and look at the way it was fought by both sides. Not just the military against military but the guerillas vs. military. The sad part is it's not just one country at fault here, it's all of them. It's the natural progression of warfare and those would do evil.

The by product of this is civilian casualties. Lots of them since WWII on both sides of the battle line. How does one prevent civilian casualties? Allow the enemy to move in amongst them and use civilians as sort of armor? I'm sure the civilians like that idea. NOT. Non-combatants have suffered since the first war way back in time. It was customary for the victor to slay all civilians when a town was taken.

I'm not condoning. Just explaining that this is nothing new in warfare. Warfare is brutal and many times the victors suffer just as much as the losers. The face of warfare is changing and will continue to change.

Learn from history instead of repeating it.

I'm of the opinion that they don't believe their own tripe. But the Marketing Department thinks that the customers believe it. You really have to ask this? How about it's because he has the same self-serviing personality (asshat) that brings out the hate of Jobs, Gates, Ballmer, etc. here in the comments. Any story about Wikileaks releases also has comments from the asshat about how great he is and what he's doing for the for the world.. Which may be why sites like cryptome tend to get overlooked.

Re: Moving "Up"

I believe you are spot on. But the logic behind this isn't logical. In the academic world you move by getting advanced degrees and each move is more specialized. Sadly, a generalist who has a world view of things and knows that if Team "A" do "X", then something will crash for Team "B" is out of favor because they can point the finger, affix the blame, and solve the problem. The specialist lose out on that glory. It's business politics at it's best (or worst) and comes from the worlds of academia and government. I'm usually surprised that business work at all sometimes.
