Facebook decides space isn't its final frontier after all

Mark 85
Devil

What!!! No Facebook from space???

I'm appalled... aghast even... Here we were led to believe that soon the whole world would be sharing cat pics, cute doggie videos, pictures of lunch and selfies in order to make the world a better place Now we find out that Zuck won't allow the world to share in all this because there's no profit. Imagine that.

TERROR in ORBIT: Dodgy rocket burp biffs International Space Station off track

I'd be thinking twice about getting into a capsule who's engines fired "unexpectedly". One might end up on the way to some place far, far, away instead of home. I do hope they sort out the cause and can correct it.

Tech giants gang up on Obama over encryption key demands

Mark 85

This is the same Obama or a twin?

One of them just directed all the federal sysadmins to implement HTTPS because encryption and security are "good"....??????? Oh wait.. good for government, not for the people. Got it.. nevermind.

How about this...

Instead of the trash/bin/skip... send them back to the manufacturer. If they get enough coming back, it might be a wake-up call. I'd suggest bypassing their mail room and shipping them to the CEO's home address if that's available.

It does seem to be another case of smoke and mirrors. If we were able to follow the money, it's probably coming from some IoT firm that wants to sell it junk as "no power connection" i.e.: wall socket/mains needed.

Armchair cyber-army vandalizes Uncle Sam's Army.mil website

Mark 85

Nice.....

Two thoughts come to mind....

1) Exactly what are they saying? The English is so bad it makes no sense. Maybe they meant: "Your commanders are training you to die fighting?" or "Your commanders are training us to die fighting."?????

2) If they're so damn passionate, why aren't they in their army instead of behind a computer? Sorry, a computer posting or hack isn't going to win any wars, kids.

Russia copies EU commissars with own right to be forgotten law

Re: Eye for one?

As to the rights and wrongs of the British Empire, that history has no bearing on Putins action now.

While you are correct, have you ever noticed that when any political, racial, ethical topic is brought up about any country or any leader, that the excesses of the poster's country are brought up? I'm not sure if it's to remind others of their past guilts or to make the current poster be in the "right".

We can't correct the wrongs done in the past, only try not to do wrong in the present. I, personally, cannot think of any country that doesn't have a closet full of skeletons or questionable behaviors in their past and many are still doing questionable things.. including my own.

Mark 85

Re: How about a "Right to NOT be forgotten"...

Hmm... it's quite possible that Putin might end up being airbrushed out once his reign is over. It depends on how the rest of his political career goes and how the person to takes over when he's finally out that will determine this.

Life is full of good stuff, you know! Plus, medical science is rapidly progressing towards eternal life, and you might miss out by just a couple of years!!!

I realize you used the troll icon, but why would anyone want eternal life? One has to be careful what they wish for. I say this because the Nanny State is increasing it's powers. Don't do this.. do this... think of <fill in blank>, we need to keep you safe so... On and on... pretty soon, one won't be able to take a crap without the toilet reporting analysis to some agency.

Re: This is why we can't have nice things!

Ah... the old either "you are with us or against us" diatribe. Pity that there's little rational discussion.

Mark 85

Re: Ross McKitrick? Seriously?

I wish you were right, but around this Forum.. if your not on one side or the other, you are fair game both sides. Free thinking isn't tolerated on this topic.

Mark 85

Re: This is why we can't have nice things!

Don't sweat it. Thomas Karl will be out of a job soon once the Congress Change Deniers get a hold of this. Some of us will be rational (those of us in the middle ground who feel there's too much BS on both sides) and then the Deniers and True Believers will do battle. Will that work?

Mark 85

Re: Old, old news

That's true... it's old tech but updated. It monitors automatically with no need to blow into a tube.

A certain relative had to have one installed and promptly figured out how to bypass it. A simple can of compressed air.

Mark 85

Slippery Slope Indeed....

While I think it's an interesting concept, there's the law of unintended consequences as well as human inanity.

Mouthwash, possibly aftershaves, perfumes... lots of products with alcohol in them. How does the car know that driver is sober if they're the designated driver with a load of drunken friends? The skin sensor tech is problem with gloves and some skin conditions.

Let's not forget that impaired drivers are not always using alcohol... there's assorted legal and illegal pharmaceuticals that are just as bad as alcohol.

The human inanity part is politicos... you trip the sensors, the plod gets sent for your "intending to drive while intoxicated". Your insurance company will be notified. Maybe others.

It might be better to just push on the autonomous cars although I'm not fond of that idea either since they can monitored and abused by "security" and LEA's.

I think you're onto something. It could have been the Norks or a script kiddie, but since the US Government was the target, it has to be a big nation state that did it. We wouldn't want the government to be a laughing stock now, would we?

Not at you Kkaptain but at those who know who they are:

We're all going to die sooner or later. I put my time in Vietnam. Everyday since I left that hellhole has been a gift. F*** the terrorists and the politicos, and the 5-eyes. You want me? Then kill me. I can deal with that. But don't take my freedoms to make bad choices, good choices, and enjoy the sunrises away because you're scared shitless.

Mark 85

Re: NI

I believe that most people would have soldiered on. What I saw was an immediate pandering and scare mongering from politicos and media. For days on end... over and over the images of the planes flying in and media and politicians telling us we weren't "safe" and needed protecting.

The best thing the politicos could have done would to been said "F*** you terrorists.. we're going to go about our lives and ignore you.". But then again, there's a lot of commentards here about who feel that protection and security trump freedom's.

The terrorists are helping the politicians and the three letter agencies win. It's all about power and money....

Wikileaks publishes TiSA: A secret trade pact between US, Europe and others for big biz pals

Mark 85

Re: mainstream media

Go a step further and you'll soon realize that they aren't pandering to those who are thoughtful, curious, and concerned readers. They pander to the lowest common denominator. IF they were to push stories such as this, they would still be ignored in favor of "celebrity circus" news. Ok.. and sports also.

Mark 85

Re: It seems everyone has missed the main point

Well... you hit the nail.."protection'. The only "protection" wanted is corporate bottom line. A good example is the latest from Disney and their IT Staff. Canned about 150 or more IT types and brought in H-1B visa types. Seems the visa law has a loophole about not firing your staff to import cheap labor.

So why should this be any different? "Protection" of the workers and citizens is a myth as this treaty, the hints about the upcoming one, the visa laws and as the Snowden revelations have shown regarding what's being collected on all of us.

Latest Snowden leak: NSA can snoop internet to catch 'hackers' – no warrants needed

Mark 85
Thumb Down

Ok.. they got a mandate to "catch hackers"....

so how many have they caught? How many attacks have thwarted.? There's the two biggie questions. This crap is sold to the public that it will "make us safer" but cyberwise, I feel no safer now than 10 years ago. The baddies are still out there and their numbers are growing. Why haven't there been statements from those who want these slurps enacted and kept up selling it to us by tales of successes? Seems all we ever hear is, "yeah, we knew about them".... and no action.

Mark 85

Re: Whatever happened to 'respect'???

This truly has become a vicious circle. Customers call, you don't answer immediately, they call someone else. Respect all the way around in needed both from the contractor/tradesman, etc. to the customers.

I always get kudos for not picking in the middle of a conversation. My voicemail says simply: "I'm with a customer right now. Please leave a voicemail and when I get back you I will give you the same attention I'm giving this customer which is, my full, undivided attention."

Those that have no patience for this message (and there have been a few who think they are minor dieties) don't get called back. Mutual respect is a two-way street

Mark 85

Whatever happened to 'respect'???

Don't parents teach that to their sprog anymore? Once upon a time, parents taught children how to show respect for where they were. If in a classroom, respect the teacher and the others in the room. In a theater, respect the other patrons. I could go on but you get the idea.

Re: Democracy

I'm wishing I could upvote that more than once. I think the concept of "mandate" is that they listen to contributors and lobbyists and NOT to the people. Nor do I think that this situation will be get any better in the near future in any of our countries.

Re: Why is there an AC trying to derail the comments?

It's just a troll. Pity that we can't call in an airstrike on it.

Mark 85

Well.. as we know, Assange is an attention-freak. This will stir up lots of undesirable attention and probably ensure that he remains in embassy. I would imagine that if it is leaked to Wikileaks that Assange will be wanted by a whole lot more countries than those that want him now.*

*Smarmy aside.. why any country would want him is beyond me. They probably should just ignore him. He won't go away but he could end up irrelevant.

And yes, this is pure and simple blackmail. Is there really anyone naïve and stupid enough to believe that this would be the only time they use it? Or that if they're successful, another company wouldn't try to use it? Hell.. if anyone of us tried this, they'd lock us way.

The crap will surely hit the rotating air movement device when the devices won't work with unless connect to a network with internet access. Meantime, I'll continue to play Luddite with IoS/T and try to ignore it.

IF (and it's a pretty big if) we believe certain Congress Critters, yes... it's a start. Senator Ron Wyden has been very vocal about these things and he's slowly convincing others to see the light (so to speak). At least for now with this bit of legislation, they just can't slurp everything but have to get a warrant for the data metadata from the Telco.

Couple sues estate agent who sold them her mum's snake-infested house

Re: US Home inspection..

Ah.. different states, different rules on the inspection... gotta' love it. However, the seller usually has to sign off that there are "no known defects or issues" as such. This usually includes things like mold, rot, bad systems, varmit infestations, etc. If they sign off, and it's later determined that they lied, they can be held liable for civil action. In this case, the inspector should also be pulled into the lawsuit as those are the kinds of things they're supposed to look for in most states.

Exactly. If they want it bad enough, they will take it. If not on some phone/laptop, email forwarding, etc. then the old-fashioned way... print it out and tuck it in the briefcase.

I worked at one place that checked briefcases at the door. One enterprising lad, stuff envelopes with what he wanted and addressed them to a PO Box. He then dropped them into the corporate mail system. Sometimes he put the postage, other times, the company automatically did. He was caught when an envelope accidentally came open in the mailroom.
