OPM data breach: Looking at you, China! National Intelligence head stares out Beijing

Mark 85

Re: He's 'avin a giraffe

I find it amazing that in other high profile attacks (the ones that make the media), they can establish rather quickly ("quickly" for some value of governmentspeak) but when the government's house is broken into, they don't know. Is the government IT that bad? No logs? No intruder protection? Basically a wide open front door with no one giving a crap? This seems like bad policy, not politics, but incompetence of those in charge of IT (and not the individual department heads of say.. OPM). But then, we've seen a lot of bad policy made whereas in this case, any policy would have been better than none.

Mark 85

Nice thoughts. But if you've followed McCain, he'll not do the rational thing when he vent and make a scene suitable for a soundbite.

Google helps Brit crims polish their image – but what about the innocent

Mark 85

Google might or might not be making a point

But, if they won't discuss, either in general terms or specific instances, we have no way of knowing. In the cases presented in the article, there might be valid reasons for the takedown request and not necessarily the perps. It's a pity that they are not a bit more open on this. Currently, it looks like just more game playing from Google.

Apple pulls Civil War games in Confederate flag takedown

Mark 85

This new "political correctness" for games, etc.is a bit scary. In the scale models arena, some guys have been beaten to a bloody pulp (verbally) for putting the swastika on German tanks, planes, and ships. and then when they remove it, another group will beat them verbally for not being historically accurate. I imagine this is about to spread into other areas for this flag. The big question is: who or what is next? Paintings in art museums?

BTW, it's good, IMO, that the flag is pulled from State capitols, etc...

Yahoo! displaces Ask in Oracle's Java update crapware parade

Mark 85

So now Yahoo! is volunteering (paying) to replace Ask as the most useless search engine? I'm not sure if this is pathetic or just more of the downhill slide to oblivion.

As the US realises it's been PWNED, when will OPM heads roll?

Mark 85

Well.. it's possible (remotely possibe... I'm going for cynical value) that the NSA did the hack and one of their leakers is leaking the files. Perhaps this whole thing was/is to make a point that we can attack but not defend? Penetration testing that ran amok anyone?

No matter who broke in....let the heads roll and put them on spikes at the White House gates. The problem is, it's a huge problem that starts with the Executive and Legislative branches (priorities and funding) and filters down. Right now, there's probably some poor schmuck with a sysadmin title who's quietly updating his resume because he knows that crap rolls downhill and he's at the bottom of it even though he was powerless to implement anything.

Re: Probably a token fee...

Agencies and departments generally don't talk to each other. To do so would mean loss of status and power and most importantly, budget. Hell, the army, the navy, and air force don't talk to each and they're in the same agency/department.

Universal only to the States.... 999 is or was the prefix for Joliet in Illinois at the time. For along time, if you dialed 999 in Chicago, that number would dispatch a tow truck Might still be but I don't know for certain.

Apparently they had a heck of time sorting it out so it would be easy to remember and also didn't conflict with all the phone systems that were around at the time.. area codes and prefixes.

Mark 85

Those phones (long ago) with the disk you turned with your finger where different in the Anglo-American world and Europe. The shortest distance to turn the disk was 9 in the Anglo-American world and 0 in Europe. Fast and easy to find even in the dark. Or was it the oppiset way, damn if I can remember.

Login creds for US agencies found scrawled on the web's toilet walls

In many ways, I hope there isn't a second leaker for his sake or that he/she is now so far underground* that any of the 5-eyes won't be able to find him/her. All the wrath and frustration will be vented on the second one.

The question is, "is anyone surprised at this"? I wouldn't be surprised if every leader (including the US "leader" - for some value of leader) was being snooped by allies.

Re: Sue them under the DMCA?

Ah.. I'm in the US. We can sue but fat chance the case will ever be heard. Given the way all the governments are acting.. bad assumption on my part. My bad and I'll go stand in the corner.

Mark 85

Re: Sue them under the DMCA?

Won't happen. Any lawsuit filed against the government or one of it's agencies has to be "approved" by the government before it can go to court. There's not been many, if any, that have been "approved" over the years.

There's something to be said for typewriter's, paper, and old style mainframes with dedicated terminals and dedicated networks.

Which, I guess, is something I don't really comprehend... why give everyone in every office, government or private, internet access? That is just begging from problems, from wasting time to a large attack surface.

The time-wasting is something that probably can't be controlled. Before computers there was the water-cooler, after computers but before internet access was common there was Solitare.

That's entirely possible. There's lots of people in tech who don't understand the basic tech. For most, the operational theory behind the processor is the FM* Theory of Operation.

How about this... I, for one, don't trust any individual government at this point in time. Since the UN is a multi-country thing, I trust them even less as they are more secretive and old-boy-club type of thing.

Simple really, the politics of academia apply. Assange™ celebrates third year in Ecuadorian embassy broom closet

Mark 85

Re: Truer words were never spoken --- "EIT"

Why would they need an extradition request when they just use extraordinary rendition.. /facepalm

Don't be paranoid about this... It's logical they won't use "extraordinary rendition" to make him disappear. He's very high profile. If he disappeared, there would be too much probring from supporters/press/etc.

Mark 85

Two sides to the police watching...

This is a high profile case. The fact that Assange seems to love his publicity doesn't help. My sense is that the police are there for two reasons:

1) to pick him up if and when he comes out.

2) to protect the embassy and him.

If they weren't there and he walked out, where's he going to go? Anywhere he lands, he'll pop up in the news again if nothing else to make some pronouncement about another leak being published. If he doesn't want to be tracked and found, he has to be very quiet.

Also, if the police weren't there, there are those who would probably try to do him harm. He's angered a lot of people over the years and I'm sure someone would try with possible death or injury to embassy personnel.

So yes, this is a win-win for Julian. He's safe and secure from those against him and he has ready made soapbox for whenever he wishes to say something.

Taylor Swift boycotts Apple Music over no-pay-for-plays shocker

Mark 85

Re: Usual Apple greed

I dion't know how it works over on the right side of the pond, but here on the left, something like that is a 'loss leader". The store takes the hit but sells something else at a higher price and uses, shall we say, creative accounting for advertising expenses. They generate higher traffic and have more of those infamous impulse buys (especially if they bring their kids). The farmer/distributer still sells the carrots to the store at the same price.

Mark 85

Re: Usual Apple greed

Should we be surprised by it? Or maybe we're just jaded because of the industry wide acceptance of these practices which really only benefit the lawyers.

While I see people standing up for her position, I also wonder how many actually buy music and not pirate it.

Disclaimer: I buy CD's when I want music or turn on the radio. I don't pirate anything.... I believe the artists should be paid and I also believe that the music execs are bunch of crooks who'd cheat their grandmother out of her pension if they could. Come to think of it, there's way too many execs in the IT field who would do the same thing to their grandmother. I think I fall into the "jaded cynic" category.

Why is it that women are consistently paid less than men?

Mark 85

Re: Something missing

Quotas are never a good thing. You don't get the best people for the job, just someone who matches the quota.

Have you ever been a victim of this discrimination? I have and it's not funny. There was a running joke back in the 70's here in States when they tried to implement racial quotas that the ideal candidate for any job was a black woman who was over 50 and a veteran of the Spanish-American War. No other qualifications needed.

Mark 85

Re: Something missing

Ah... comparing apples to oranges today or looking for political correctness are we? Political correctness has nothing to do with truth and usually vice-versa.

I guess next, you'll be telling us that hamburger flippers here in the States are worth the $15 minimum wage they're screaming about.
