Christmas in tatters for Nottinghamshire tots after mayor tells them Santa's too busy

Xerox: Prepare to say cyan-ara, HP Inc. We're no paper tiger. We're really very serious about that hostile takeover

Mark 85

Re: I wonder why Xerox is so fixated on this HP merger.

The "master" corporate raider (Icahn) is a stock holder in both which should say something about this deal. Probably plan would be to merger, self off the profit making parts, sell off anything else they can, and make a tidy profit.

Mark 85

Re: Smaller company attempting a hostile takeover?

If the stock price is up that much (per the article) on both companies then there's some investors looking ahead and realizing this is the time to get out and still make a profit.

Copy that? We'll never join you on the Xerox side if you don't answer simple questions – HP

Mark 85

Since Icash has stock in both companies he really can't loose so maybe HP will go for hostile takeover of Xerox. Like you, I'm wondering why HP doesn't do that.

Re: DIY gone mad!

Ack.. brain fart. "I saw a post on FB while visiting him." should be "I saw a post on FB while visiting a friend.". I need more coffee before commenting.

Mark 85

Re: DIY gone mad!

I saw a post on FB while visiting him. One of those "hey you need to see this"... It was of a house that was for sale. Several rooms were covered in power sockets, various cable points, etc. Our basic response what "WTF?". They were asking a premium price for all the "improvements".

Mark 85

Re: That box of old cables

That's an awful lot of running up and down steps from the description of his wire bundles. On the other hand, once identified and then removed, there's a nice pile of cash to be made selling it to the scrap yard.

BOFH: Trying to go after IT's budget again?

Mark 85

If PHB's were to read the BOFH articles, they might get the clue not to irritate the IT folks. But for full impact (bat to the head?) they need to read the comments and understand how devious we really are at protecting ourselves.

Why can't you be a nice little computer maker and just GET IN THE TRUNK, Xerox tells HP in hostile takeover alert

Mark 85

Name one big company of late that does't have things hidden away in basement, in a closet, behind a locked door.... etc.

Mark 85

Sounds like classic Icash tactics to me: If all else fails, hostile take over time, replace the board, screw everyone inside and outside the company and PROFIT".

I doubt that the "trickster" will be around after the first year. Looks more like a product for hipsters than something practical for those hauling stuff. On the other hand, being bullet proof, it might go over well with those of a criminal mindset.

Video-editing upstart bares users' raunchy flicks to world+dog via leaky AWS bucket

Mark 85

Why?

Why are they even storing the flicks? It should be upload, convert, tweek, download, and then the server erases it. Unless the company has ulterior motives (blackmail?) there's no reason to keep them. It would also save cash on storage costs.

Questions hang over Gatwick Airport after low level drone near-miss report

Mark 85

Re: Drones

Won't work. How many people without a proper driver's license still drive? Requiring a "test" won't stop many drone user except for the one's who normally obey laws.

Perhaps banning them, might work. So might take get a drone license (rules, laws, etc.) before being able to buy one might help. But many (some? a few?) will still find a way to get one and fly it whenever and wherever they want. After all, they're "entitled".

HP to Xerox: Nope, your $33.5bn bid falls short of our valuation

Mark 85

Re: "not in the best interests of shareholders"

"Icahn might well have shares in Xerox"

According to the previous article on this he does.

There's the big problem. The HP board's statement “In reaching this determination, the board also considered the highly conditional and uncertain nature of the proposal, including the potential impact of outsized debt levels on the combined company’s stock, It pretty much says they have Icahn's strategy figured out: he'll bleed them dry and destroy whatever is left.

Nice idea but it wouldn't work. El Presidente would force a giant wall to be built between the Earth and Moon to keep the aliens out.

Apparently, from the stories above, Directors are a special breed, having been placed (by God?) in positions of responsibility without having been supplied with the tools required to do the job.

Wrong thinking. Directors are there for the profit bonuses and keeping shareholders happy. So cutting costs is a priority.

What most distressed the department was not the fact that it could have killed 5 admins, but that it was in clear breach of HSE guidelines, and most of all in breach of a new piece of legislation, Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1985, or RIDDOR. Typical civil service.

Indeed, to hell with the people, the paperwork is a nighmare for the equipment.

Judge shoots down Trump admin's efforts to allow folks to post shoddy 3D printer gun blueprints online

Mark 85

Why a 3D printed gun?

It doesn't shoot straight, or far, and will probably blow up in the shooter's face. It's more of a danger to the shooter and anyone nearby. For crying out loud, if you feel you need a gun for protection, buy a good one and not one that's some guy's idea of a proper firearm. Then take the time and spend some money and learn how to properly and safely use it as well as properly store it.

Disclaimer: I don't own a gun (but have in the past) and for the foreseeable future, won't own one either. But I understand some folks feel the need for self protection.

I enjoyed it, or something very similar. Shark, flensed, buried for 6 months, dug up, cubed.

The Vietnamese have a similar dish involving a chicken (whole), a clay pot, various spices, and a hole in the ground where it's buried for some period of time. The time varies depending on who you talk to. Then there's baluts..

I'll go get my coat and stand outside in the fresh hair and try to forget those dishes from a long time ago....

Section 230 supporters turn on it, its critics rely on it. Up is down, black is white in the crazy world of US law

Mark 85

The law of Unintended Consequences applies....

Free speech gives you rights, it's true. But that doesn't mean you can yell "Fire" in a movie theater when there is no fire. I don't think a warning like you suggest will work as it will be buried the clutter of most websites and ignored by users.

In this case, Section 230 probably seemed like a good idea at the time. Maybe it still is. Who decides what can be published and what can't be? Where is the line drawn?

Maybe a modification is needed such that things be treated on a case by case basis but then... everyone will find something to complain about. Part of the problem is, quite honestly, I believe lawyers. The neverending "you can get compensation for......" ads. Followed by lawsuits for the most trivial of things.

Hey, you've earned it: Huawei chucks workers a £219m bonus for tackling US blacklist

Mark 85

A true capitalist would have declared that the company was actually still suffering from the blacklist, despite the efforts of workers, and used that as an excuse to cut their pay rather than reward them.

However, the C-Suite would be getting large bonuses because of all their valuable service in moving the company through the "hard times".

Mark 85

Which is a pretty large bonus from what they tell us the workers are paid.

Mark 85
