Clearly, most of us are NOT like him and that's a good thing. Yes, most of us would love to make even portion of that and then go enjoy life and our friends and families. Him and is ilk are only interested in the amassing of wealth and really don't give a rat's ass about anyone else on the planet. I'll take my life instead of his, thank you.

Switch survives three hours of beer spray, fails after twelve
Re: "Land that thing now, while I'm still in the mood to let you !"
Yep.. been there too. We merged with a bigger company and their network folks came in and rewired/reconfigured everything. Then hit the power switch on the main router to connect us with the main office. Five minutes later, the screams from the processing people and the call center started as suddenly the local mainframe and servers weren't connecting. Seems someone forgot to change the IP on the local mainframe which was already in use by the main office. The router not having the correct info, routed everything that supposed to go to mainframe to the main office machine.
Two years later, they pulled the same bit when re-working the network and local servers.... The guy doing the DNS/DHCP, IP configuration, etc. wasn't around much longer after that.
Re: Football is football
Meh... 61 comments at this point and most seem to be arguing over what to call the came. Same game just different terms. One has to remember that the USA and the UK are divided by a common language.
On that note, most us who live here in the States and read UK publication, I would hope that we grasp the difference between "football" and "football" much like we know the differences is spelling of certain words that require "u" over there. Seems the argument is amongst you lads in the UK.. so could you take it outside... ?

After Civis Analytics worked on the Healthcare.gov website, it emerged that personal data was being sent to “to advertising and Web analytics sites”, including Google.
This is perhaps the most "interesting" tidbit. What was/is being sent and what's being done with it? Was it test data or live data from real people?

I'd much rather see a Trump/Palin ticket. At least that would be funny.
Only during the election process. After that, not so much. Actually I think which "hopefuls" get the nod on the either side, the election should be entertaining. After that.... I don't want to think about it.

Sorry, that won't work. I will happily embed metadata in an image or provide attribution via caption or whatever but I won't let you spy on my visitors.
That's a bit naïve... Google, any advertisers, all track your users. And those are just the well-known trackers.

E-cigarettes help save lives, says Royal College of Physicians
Several issues here....
The first is a biggie.. taxes. In most states (in the US), they can't be taxed like cigars, cigarettes because the tax laws specifically use the word "tobacco" and not "tobacco derivatives' or something similar. Government wants it's pound of flesh from us.
Profits and big tobacco/big pharma... unless they can figure out how to monetize e-cigs, they're not going to give up their markets willingly. They can and will commission studies to prove how bad e-cigs are. There's no e-cig industry giant who can do this.
Which brings us to the last point.. lobbying. There's no big manufacturer or supplier with the budget to lobby. So guess who gets the lawmaker's attention.
Both myself and my lady have converted from cigs to e-cigs. We breathe and feel better. Anecdotal, but that's our position. And yes, we're drug addicts... nicotine and caffeine.

Re: It takes a special sort of person...
Since when does one's philosophy need to interfere with one's expertise in a tech field or vice versa? I've met more than nutcase working in engineering and/or IT. Some are really far out there in beliefs but as far as their tech/engineering skills, they were second to none.
One should never dismiss those who threaten or attack. Instead one should seek to understand their thinking. That is way to defeat them. Read some of the classics on warfare and politics. "Know thy enemy" is a very true statement.

The case for ethical ad-blocking
Re: First questions first
Ads are like content. There's a choice. What the ad companies want is forced viewing. Imagine the hell that would be raised if, say, FB wanted a mandate that FB is your homepage on your browser and you WILL look at it? Or a TV network got a mandate that your TV had to tune to their network for X hours a day. Sorry ad guys, I'll tell you the same thing I'd tell any other company that demands a mandate.... FO.
Re: When is ad-blocking ethical?
It's very ethical in my mind. If the ads did not deliver malware, if they weren't full of Flash - noise - blinking lights, I'd let them through. But given the circumstances of malware alone, they get blocked just like certain sites. Since the ad agencies and the websites that run the ads won't police themselves, we have to do it for them and best way is to block and destroy the revenue stream.

Re: "curated information"
The absence almost complete of American's is enough to cause some head scratching as well. Are they all really super keen to pay tax?
As BumpyCat points out, there's lots of tax shelters here in the States. That is unless you're something like a drug lord or have a need to launder money then it's a different game. Also, USA types are less likely to use Panama for moving money just because that would really attract attention due to the politics.

@Meldreth -- Re: Utterly unacceptable
True... but for one thing... they breed and multiply and that alone spreads the vileness. Many people here in the States have had years of the NEA and other groups pounding things into our heads that it's their job and parents shouldn't interfere. Well, schools have failed and parents don't know or understand how to pick up the slack.
And... then there's the anonymous part of using the Internet. No one knows whether you're a dog or just an ass.

F-35's dodgy software in the spotlight again
@lglethal -- Re: Now: Slower, less maneuverable and with an all new blue screen heads up display
I don't know if you're old enough but do remember or hear about the F-4 in Vietnam? The first versions had no guns. They suffered serious losses to the NVAF. Once they got guns, the odds were better. Since that time, all US fighters have had a gun and while missiles might get credit for most of the kills, I'd rather be in plane with a gun... just in case.
Re: Just trust US. We've been flying by the seat of our pants for a long time
Wow... I thought I was cynical.
Things will get interesting hopefully soon. Seems they did a "fly-off" war game of kill or be killed (think "top gun" only more intense as these were all vetern pilots) between the F-15 and the F-22. The F-22 cleaned up with no losses. There's one pending between the F-35 and the F-22. My money will be on the F-22.

So fine... if that's what the industry leaders want, then give it to them with follow-ons. For every graduate, we take away 2 H1Bs. And yes, there's all those laid off "old people" in their 40's and above... perhaps a quota even though I'm against quotas. Or maybe a minimum IT wage?
Damn... those companies might just have to pay people what they are actually worth.
We can turn out more graduates. Will they have any proficiency or skillsets? Or aspire to be PHB's?
Google can't hold back this malware running riot in its Play store
Re: What chance ordinary users to stay safe?
I daresay that we all will be (or should be) watching the MS store since that's the way they're headed with Win10. I can see where the malware writers would love to get into that as it's a one-stop drop with potentially a very large return. It won't just be home users but corporates as well.

Re: Turd Cruise
Too bad we don't have a "none of the above" choice, which if it gets a majority of the votes causes a new election to be held with new candidates.
Until Congress can be convinced that there's more money to be made and put in their pockets by this, it won't happen. The other problem is, most of the ones in there now would fall into the "none of the above" category and they wouldn't want that to happen...

Maybe I'm being old-fashioned in some way, but why go for almost a billion like they planned? Most folks I know would be happy and content with a just few million. Do the miscreants have obscene expenses?
The other thought comes to mind is maybe miscreants such as this are state actors channeling the funds into their government's coffers since governments do love money coming in.
