A real loch mess: Navy larks sunk by a truculent torpedo

Mark 85

Re: Of course it was going to hit the boat!

Health and Safety officials would have a heart attack at the mere idea these days; I'm not even sure how he got away with it back then!

We have to remember that back then Darwin's Law was still permitted. So, model rockets, bicycles without helments, kids going off the local woods without adults, and other stuff that today would be cause for police action. Have to think of the children, right?

If you don't LARP, you'll cry: Armed fun police swoop to disarm knight-errant spotted patrolling Welsh parkland

Re: IT Angle?

I'm curious what a "bust stop" is? On the other hand, I might not want to know. Must be something that's part of British culture. Or a Monty Python thing.

Mark 85

Re: WTF ?!!

I must be blind as I'm not seeing a grenade launcher but state of the art rifles. On the other hand, a guy in armor with a sword might justify a grenade launcher.

Flame

When I met this machine, most of the card bracket had been sawed out, and the cards held in with wood screws and hot melt glue!

I ran into a few like this,. The one that was really borked had the metal shavings and filing debris from the chassis mod left inside and everything inside was coated with metal bits. From the damage and soot, I daresay the flames and sparks must have been spectacular.

Re: Sug@gestion @DCFusor

So, we're afraid to blame the educational system for failing to educate people enough to make things like this not a problem?Too long to copy the rest.

You are correct in this. Critical thinking went away starting in early 70's with the teacher's union deciding we needed more sheeple, less independence, etc. We are now reaping what has been sown. And since Darwin or really hardly any science is being taught, his law is running amok in the population.

As an American, I fear for the Republic and the Constitution. Both are under attack by both parties.

ICANN delays .org sell off after California's attorney general intervenes at last minute, tears non-profit a new one over sale

Follow the money.

Seems that no one is following the money both where it's coming from and where it's going to. So far, no one has said who is buying and no one has said who get's the cash from the sale. I have a feeling that the board of ICANN will make some serious pocket change from this deal.

I must be missing something. Are these for the laptop or boxen? I and most people I know, don't move our boxen and who needs wheels on a laptop? These must just be to prove that a fool and his/her money are soon parted.

At least someone's making out like a bandit: Scammers have pocketed $13m in Coronavirus fraud from the US this year

Mark 85

I'm getting on average, 3 phone calls a day that are probably fraudulent and the number of spam mails telling me how to get the government money, shopping deals, etc. has really jumped.

It would all stop if a) People didn't answer their phones for unknown callers and b) examine the sending addy of all email unless you know who it's from. I guess the dumbing down of folks is well in progress since critical thinking or even logic isn't taught anymore.

It's official! Space travel increases the brain size of astronauts, even when they're back on Mother Earth

Mark 85

Re: This is a spanner in the works.

Or rotating stations... no need for sci-fi.

I was hoping someone would remember those. For "reasons" the space boffins seemed to have abandoned that idea. Though I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years/decades some boffins says "let's try this big spinning station".

Rewriting the checklists: 50 years since Apollo 13 reported it 'had a problem' – and boffins saved the day

Mark 85

Re: From a time when small furry creatures from alpha centauri

Apollo 13 is a great metaphor to throw at short-sighted managers who want cut-and-dried solutions to basic problems and employ script-droids as admins.

Like those who insisted the Shuttle launch "on-time or else"? Sad situation when managers can override engineers. Luckily for Apollo, it was the engineers in charge.

I wasn't calling that an ejection trigger but "grab bar" to hang on to.

Mark 85

Re: Where on earth is that handle?

And the one's I'm familiar with have a "grab handle" in front of them about chest high. This whole thing was a comedy (all most a tragedy) of errors. Seems from here, that a whole bunch of people didn't do their job properly.

Nope. That kind of pressure won't work with them. Only profit pressure will work. Or maybe threaten the board with the requirement that they be aboard the first launch and then individually on the next several.

Similar events occur 9 months after major snowstorms shut things down for a few days. So this really isn't surprising.
