But if the did that, there wouldn't be anyone in government office (elected) nor anyone owning and running large corporations.

Retaliation and manipulation are probably easier now with the Internet and with "social media" and then the news orgs (including El Reg) getting stories off other social media (like Twitter and Facebook).
I would suspect that it's easier to do in the "free" and "democratic" countries than in places like Russia, China, etc. where the news and even the Internet are controlled.
Everyone spies on everyone and it's overly simplistic to write china off as copycats.
It's not just weapons. They copy damned near anything and everything and then sell it to the world. Their law says only native Chinese can coyright and they will only enforce native Chinese copyright. Everyone else is ignored. Even now, there is fighting going on internally as the Chinese copyright/patent laws are not being enforced and companies are stealing from each other.
Education does have a large role in this and the US is failing at it. There's been more than a few articles about companies trying to hire (entry level and even will train those they hire) machinists. Sadly, most of the kids who apply can't pass the math part. Many can barely read the tests. But the lucky few who can pass and get hired are making pretty darn good money and as they acquire new skills will move the pay chain.
Don't worry, he'll be donating the profits from those businesses to the U.S. Government. He said so when he was inaugurated.
You seriously believe that? Rule 1 says: "Anytime an elected official or political wannabee is moving their lips... they're lying.".
He may have said it, but I'll believe if/when he does it. Then again, I always look to Rule #1 no matter the political affiliation of the speaker.
The party involved is blaming their loss of the election on their highly unethical behaviour being revealed at the point in the democratic process where people can hold them to account, not that they were engaged in highly unethical behaviour. Which is actually the problem?
The problem is any form of democracy. Voting is based on public opinion of the candidates and manipulating the voters goes back a long way. Implied dirty dealings are worse than actual dirty dealings many times. Remember the old joke about the reporter asking the candidate "Do you still beat your wife?". It's tough to disprove some things that never happened.
Is there an answer? Who knows but I expect that this type of warfare and dirty campaigning will continue and possibly get worse. Those dealing in it had best be careful since it's possible the backlash could destroy them.
Smart TV + Smart Fridges will take a knock too, once consumers realize how Samsung / Philips Ad serving & slurping isn't in their best interests.
I take the dim view on this.. the average consumer won't have a clue how much serving and slurping is going on. They'll more pissed about the thing borks during an update or is phoning home while they're trying to watch whatever reality show is the hit of the day.
What is he thinking? Why profit of course. The problem is there's more and more of these types of marketing types and companies. In the next few years it'll probably be pretty hard to find anything that's not IoT crap.
Not only bad security, more complexity and general shit for brains in the software, etc.... there's the bandwidth with all them phoning home and telling the manufacturer everything the product knows about you. We pay for their data collection and their fuck-ups not only with the additional cost of the product but for the bandwidth and any headaches that occur due to the general stupidity of those making and selling them.
I think I need an adult beverage and a lie down... if the fridge will let me have one and the couch won't object to my presence.
Good article in the link. It's the kind of thing that makes one go "hmmm....." I suspect Adams is on to something and given Trump's past, it's probably right. Go big and then back off, but he is playing the left vs. right and that puts him in the firmly in the crosshairs of both sides. I think a large bag of popcorn is needed for this... and maybe a few adult beverages. It's going to be a long haul.......
some spamming entity will 'friend' a zillion people, and next thing you know, that automated spamming happy birthday message becomes a vector for getting away with spam-vertisements.
Or more likely.. malvertsing... "Congratulations... send me 2 bitcoins or your data is history"......
Are you mad? Well, that will stop you getting into the USA in future. Apparently the want ALL your Social Media account details. Only those with something to hide don't have these accounts.
It might happen that some of citizens might be escorted to the door then for not having a Social Media Account. I guess we're all expected to take an interest in 1) cats 2) what everyone had for dinner 3) reality TV. I'm sure there's others that should be on the list of "must reads"....
Meh.... so kick me out but just let me land someplace that will let me be.
Well... there is the Glowforge which has been advertising itself as a "3D Laser Printer"... but it's a cutter not a printer. They don't require an outside vent as they have a "filter"... which I doubt would filter the gases generated by cutting. Some plastics and materials do produce toxic substances that need to be vented lest they build up. MDF comes to mind as formaldehyde (IRRC) is generated.
I have a laser cutter and use it regularly and it's vented outside even though I don't cut plastics or MDF. The smoke alone from some woods is reason enough.
"Usually" there are certain things a President should not delegate to others. I daresay security briefings are one of them. I'm sure there's been some Presidents who did it at least once or twice during their term in office but not as a matter of policy like this.
Trump has commented in the past that he's a delegator.. and that will work for many things. The Security Council briefings though? Look at the ones deleted from membership... Director of National Intelligence and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It is even more confusing when the Director of the Office of Management and Budget ahs been removed from membership but is invited to every meeting.
Very strange happenings... I hope you are right and he knows what he's doing. And let's not drag "look at who else did X" as just because someone else did it, doesn't make it right.
The incident reports form NASA pointed out a lot of failings including this. The electronics and electrical systems didn't have conformal coating on many electrified bits, wire debris from building out the capsule was present in the areas of the terminal strips. The next capsule had major attention given to these areas also
I guess we haven't fully hit that mark yet. MSM is carrying reports (on the front page equivalent) that Mama June is coming back to TV. Thank <$DEITY> I've got the cable TV turned off.
Disclaimer... I really have no idea who these "people" (if they can be called that) are other than what pops up on the news sources I read. What I see of the headlines makes me want to crawl into a very deep hole and pull the hole in after me.
You and your like who compare Trump or any other sitting politician to Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, or Lennon need
OMG... John Lennon? If you meant Lenin....
None of our 1st world 'leaders' has led millions on death marches.
Unless you're being specific to the current bunch, I think Stalin and Mao (missing from the list) could be considered "1st World".
As for the rest of your post.. pretty much spot on. Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it.
It also convinces users by saying something along the lines (to the computer)... "Either work or you'll be a boat anchor". The look as I've walked away is priceless.
Sidenote.. I had a poster in the lab/shop with a voodoo priest on it with the words: "Computer fixed. No chickens needed to be killed... this time". I retired, left the sign and from friends still there, the poster is still hanging in it's spot.
With Trump, is he bluffing and are you willing to call his bluff? I think not. Hence the deterrence holds.
In a way, Trump reminds of Nixon. Is he nuts? Is he drunk? Bluffing? Or deadly serious? No one knew. Kissinger was more "rational" but the Nixon administration for many of us was viewed as being an unknown on how far he'd go if pushed. Trump has already set the stage for this with his pre-inauguration briefings and the press being abuzz about "Well why can't I use the nukes?" statements.
