I daresay that marketing, startups, and quite a few large companies pushing for IPOs are not going to want to hear this. But when he's right, he's right.
Spot on Linus. I raise a toast to you.

At least you guys on that side of the pond have a choice... <grumble><kicks cat><mutter><sputter> Where I am, we have 1 true broadband ISP and they're crap (Charter). There's one Telco with dead dog slow DSL (if you can get it by being close enough to an "office") or wireless (AT&T or Verizon). After looking at the charges and random connectivity issues, the "wireless" isn't an option for a desktop user.
Hell... I live here and I don't want to travel anymore due to this crap. TSA, Customs, etc. all seem to go out of their way to life more of a bitch than it already is. I do believe things are going to get worse before they get better (for some value of "better"). With the local cops looking to pull over anyone for any infraction (cash for their city/countyselves), the grossly abused Forfeiture Laws (again enriching someone) why would I want to go out and face that?
Hell, I assume everything I do on Net is recorded somewhere, at the least by the ISP and then available for any government agency that wants the details. I won't even get into those same ISP's and other corporates gathering everything they can and selling it to the highest bidder.
It's a cesspool, these days.... it really is.

My apologies to everyone not in this country. We have some great people here and wonderful things to see, but our government has been taking Gestapo, Stasi, and KBG lessons for the last few decades and that has got us where we are today.
It's the role of managers (from the most junior, to the most senior) to understand and identify the difference between the good and poor performers, between productive and unproductive work - but most can't, of course.
Actually, I think many can. But when it's about the manager's job and bonus.. well... logic and reality go out the window.
A wise man decades ago told me: "The primary job of management is the preservation of management's jobs.". It was true then and still true today.
You moron, if you didn't vote for Clinton, you voted for Trump by throwing it away to an (unfortunately) useless "third party."
This is bullshit. I live in state that historically votes for the Dems.... good, bad, and the ugly whatever. By voting 3rd party, it makes a statement. Also under the rules, for any 3rd party to get Federal funding they must attract a certain percentage of the vote. IF one of them ever gets that funding, they might start fielding respectable and able candidates. Or at a minimum, break the Dem/Repub stranglehold.
In this day and age, if we want change (not the political BS change of this and all previous elections) we have to game the system by their rules.
> I don't think it's the IT people at the coal face.
Where do you see me laying the blame at the feet of the poor bastards left to work from an untenable position towards impossible goals?
You didn't. I was adding to the point that in spite of where the blame gets laid (that it's those in the trenches fault). Management is root of all insanity.
But you're content with a total lack of auditing, even in critical infrastructure systems, and a legal system actively hostile towards every best practice there is in engineering.
I don't think it's the IT people at the coal face. It's corporate culture and profit motive running things. We can't share where there's lawyers in the water waiting to file lawsuits.
IT started out with "sharing" and discussing but the lawyers and greed have killed that. Pretty sad situation overall that you can't call someone and say "hey, I see a problem in your code"... and they will spread the word. Nope, liability and IP must be protected and minimized. The only reason there's bug bounties is for being able to say "we're doing something".
There is that, Trevor. But the way things have sliding down the muddy slope, a well-educated and well-rounded, able to think for themselves workforce and hence electorate, isn't what the powers that be want.
The dumbing down of America is well underway. Have look at Common Curriculum in the schools for an example. The result is people who want pap of which reality tv is a good example. Documentaries? Nope. Anything that might be science? Nope. The powers that be want a managed population.
why do Lardyarse Americans wish to transport themselves at high speed from one side of the country to the other whilst missing out the middle bit.
Who says we do except those are trying to build it? I'm one who'd prefer to look out a window see the scenery be it car, train, or airplane. (Though TSA and the lines don't make flying worth it anymore, nor do the airlines with their cattle planes.)
Then again, there are those to whom the scenery wouldn't matter nor the hassles with TSA. Even riding in a car, they stick their noses into their electronic equipment and ignore everything anyway. So maybe there is a market.
We've given up flying for this very reason. Full stop. My lady has a prosthetic leg and numerous joint replacements. She gets pulled out every freakin' time. She'll them that she can't do some things they want her to like raise her hands over her head (shoulder replacements) and then they try to force her arms to move where they can't. They'll fiddle with her prosthetic for awhile, discover the battery (it's microprocessor leg) and try to confiscate it because.. bombs.
Fucking morons running amok is what they are.
I can only speak for traffic violations in the state I'm in... cop pulls you over and writes ticket. Arguing with the cop is noted. Cop consults little book and writes in fine amount on ticket. Variables... being pleasant and admitting you screwed up to the cop may induce him/her to reduce the "term" of the violation.. say from 30 over the speed limit to 20. Plead guilty on the ticket and mail in fine. You'll get a check back by the amount the fine was reduced for paying by mail.
Yeah... I was doing about 80 in a 55 mph zone. Told the cop I was guilty as hell. He put down 70 with a fine of $150. I sent off the ticket and check and got a refund of $50. I ate the points for the ticket but what the heck...
You can get your lies from the NYT every sngle day.
Given that it's politics and any politician who's lips are moving is lying.. go right to the source... Think about the Bowling Green Massacre, "approval polls are wrong" among others. What I'm seeing is the ferocity of them defending themselves. Yeah... the MSM is full of shit but then, so is every politician on either side of the aisle.
I think we'd be surprised at how many people think that social media and the Internet, etc. is forever. I have a friend who's Instagram account got hacked and the hacker/script kiddie wiped out everything. When she finally got control back, Instagram had diddly-squat that they could restore. She was rather upset as all her precious photos were gone. Back-up... she heard of it vaguely somewhere..... but still deleted the photos from her PC after uploading...
I'm not sure about the current brood on military senior officers, but every person in the US military takes the oath to "defend and protect the Constitution"... not to blindly follow the President or protect/defend him personally. I daresay that if any of the old breed of military are in charge anywhere, such a thing would result in forcefully evicting the resident of the White House.
There was a rumor that we came close to this in the not too distant past but I'm pretty sure it was wishful thinking on the part of those telling the tale.
It ain't over until it's over. They haven't appealed yet.
The big difference seems to be who's email. In MS's case, it's a non-US citizen and apparently that email has stayed in the Ireland DC. They (MS) most likely don't want to irritate other governments and be banished. In Google's case, it's a US citizen and apparently the emails were in the US once....
Moral: Don't move the damn emails or data from country to country.....
I do remember freedom, privacy, the promise of a good life, etc. Most younger than me, don't take these things seriously as they've not seen them. Or at least been old enough to appreciate them when they did.
Yes, I've heard some of the drivel on AM Radio that passes for "talk radio". Same for Fox and the other networks as all of them have an agenda and shouty people.
Pity that we've sunk this low. This not the USA that I went to war for back in the 60's.....
