Cisco Jasper IoT bod: Smart home? Nah. Farm pest control – that's a cool use case

Mark 85

Re: He has a point

I understand the automatic watering controller based on soil moisture content sensors part of the project but I fail to understand where the internet comes into the equation.

What I see in my area from talking to orchard owners when buying fruit is that the watering stuff has no access to the Internet but only to the LAN. It records watering times, has alarms say if a valve was on to water a specific tree but the sensor either fails to read moisture or valve fails to close, etc. While these owners are pretty sharp on things, some of the LAN stuff they leave up to a specific contracting company who's specialty is this.

Re: The curse of "Blue" security

Is this some psychobabble that a marketeer monkey came up with during a PowerPoint presentation, where it was decided that "blue" induces feelings of confidence?

Think "Blue Plate Special"* or "Blue Light Special"* or "Big Blue (IBM)"... and then there's the perception that any device with a blue LED is very high tech. So yeah... marketing psychobabble.

Deployment of drones in countries they are not at war with and also against non-military targets?

The simple answer is Humans.

As long as there's humans and warfare, there will be mistakes. Hopefully, those incidents of non-military targets getting hit are on the decline as the pilots, etc. get some experience. The same goes for having troops in combat and aircraft over the battlefield. War is hell and very confusing as well as stressful. Been there, seen these things go to hell in a handbasket.

Ad men hope blocking has stalled as sites guilt users into switching off

All this makes me wonder if the next ad model will be like a captcha. Watch these X-number of ads, answer some questions about the ads and you can enter the site.

Mark 85

Oh the hypocricy in this...

Internet Advertising Bureau trade group draws from this is that ad-blocking has hit a plateau as users mull the moral implications of blitzing ads from their PCs and phones.

Moral implications they say. Yet they say nothing about their morals. Sorry, my adblocker and No-Script stays as does my growing HOSTS file which is at almost 13,000 lines. I'd rather miss something on a website than go in unarmored.

Amazon goes to court to stop US murder cops turning Echoes into Big Brother house spies

Mark 85

Re: Warrantless mass surveillance is one thing...

Third, honouring a warrant to assist with a murder investigation will not magically set a precedent whereby everyone's privacy can be legally violated ...

Actually, here in the States, it can. The US law and enforcement, etc. has much basis on precedent. On the upside, if the court forces Amazon to do so, then the only place this precedent can be used is Alabama. Unless, of course, it gets appealed upwards to the Federal level. Then all bets are off.

I was authorized to trash my employer's network, sysadmin tells court

Mark 85

He could have just said "Screw it" and left his resignation on the desk as he walked out the door. Add to that, refusal to train his replacement. No problem. This would have the choice for me (I've done it) and probably almost all of us.

He could have done the deletes, etc. and claimed "oops"... Crap does happen, but the key here is "intentional".

But to have done both is pretty damning. I can see where this might go either way at the appeals court depending on the "contract" but I'd bet on them upholding the conviction. Sadly, the law in the US makes no provision for the "extenuating circumstances" of the employer's toxic workplace.

We have a Yorkie who's basically an inside dog. Yet, she will kill any mouse that gets into the house and doesn't fall for one the old-fashioned traps, She then bringa me the corpse for her reward. She wasn't taught this.. she just does it. No playing with mouse, no chewing it up. Just a very efficient and happy little mouse killer.

Get this: Tech industry thinks journos are too mean. TOO MEAN?!

Mark 85

I find the ITIF's stance interesting. The press's job is to report the news.. good and bad. They seem to think it's more about reporting marketing and PR junk. Well... the industry has matured. PR and Marketing don't run things and those of us in the trenches need to know what's really happening. If it's the bad stuff, then maybe, just maybe, the industry needs to clean up its act and fix problems instead of blowing them off until something major happens and gets reported.

It's not all unicorns and butterflies or dreams in the sky. It's security, privacy, workerbees getting used and abused while the C-suits count their money. It's products that blow up or the IoS. Marketing hype and PR platitudes don't cut it.

Hey.... ITIF... it's time you guys got a grip.

So the messages got interrupted by "relevant links" and were a failure as to relevance and just about anything else. The problem for FB is that this hits them in the revenue stream... ads that everyone ignores. The second problem is that it tells users... err.... Most may realize that FB slurps everything but this points it out to them in a way they probably won't like much.

EU privacy gurus peer at Windows 10, still don't like what they see

Mark 85

Kudos to the EU. A phhhhtttt.. to the US.

Well, this is another fine mess they're handing us. If the EU gets want they want in the way of privacy, I say more power to them. However, what happens in the EU won't happen anywhere else. Here in the US, we'll still be slurped until MS knows more about us than our families and with the blessing of the government.

Pretty sad in many ways, that all we are is a resource to be monetized. Not a customer, but money in the bank for MS if they can get all the data they want. I have doubts that the US will ever take a stand against them or anyone else in this issue. But, at least someone is trying.

Re: "How did so many idiots get into positions of power?"

Clearly someone is doing it wrong.

Obviously, the Israelis as they have not followed the US and UK model of procurement. Or maybe it's not "procurement" per se, but departmental empire building and job security?

I do admire some of the stuff the Israelis do such as this as it's just a lot more efficient and cost effective. Other countries (US? UK?) could learn a lot from them. I'll stay out of the politics, etc. for this discussion.

I do believe that if the procurement departments were cut down, the savings would be reflected in budgets and hopefully, the cost per unit would drop since Joe Contractor/Builder would have less people to deal with.
