its the same meaning of counterfeit as damaged iPhone screens that have had the damaged glass removed and replaced to the same spec as the original screen, in many cases its done by the same suppliers to apple, but get stolen by ICE because they have an apple logo on them and are not being delivered to apple.

Re: @Martin - Why is insecurity 'inevitable'?

The bean counters should be packed onto the B ark.....

They just dont see the benefit of getting a job done right to start with. they have a choice.. they pay someone competent to develop a network interface for said bit kit. To do the job properly its going to cost say 7 figures. They pay up and then the products works perfectly and never has a problem, no security issues.

next time around, said bean counters nephew says " you can just throw wifi module you can buy off the shelf for 50p each from some Chinese distributor with a few lines of code and a 3p write once micro controller from the same distributor, I can write your code for a few quid, plus I will feed some of that fee back to you....,

which one gets the job? which one should get the job?

the thing is, 2 years down the line, some info-sec bod finds a gapeing hole in the security . they withdraw the product off the market, modernise the case, buy a different network module, release the same product again, but bump the price, sell the same product to the same customers (with a little discount)

now which one will the bean counter go with?

Re: Had it the other way around...

I was sent to a certain nuclear plant to perform Y2K checks on their servers...

I was part of the team that went to all the nuclear sites rolling out the new desktop computers.with 3 weeks before we were supposed to be hitting to road with truck loads of kit, manglement still had not worked out a plan of backing up everyone's local data. Originally it was to be backed up over the network to our own folders on the Novell network, but after half a dozen tests and lots of screaming from the server guys about the volume of traffic being sent up and down the country.

so a meeting was held to ask everyone on the team for ideas. the problem was the massive number of different computers with different hardware, the computers had to remain intact, so ripping hard drives out was out the question.

I came up with the idea of installing novell netware on desktop computers (you couldn't install netware on a laptop) then just plugging the client into it with a crossover cable, throw a floppy disk in with a bat file to search out and copy all files for supported packages, and then copying the data to the local server. plug in the new computer, run a different bat file to drag the data back on to the new computer. everyone was given a date to back up their own data for non supported software. in most cases it took lass than 20 minutes to transfer data over to the new machine....

roll-out went well and no nuclear sites went tits up....

Arthur:

How much?

Mr. Prosser:

None at all.

I am almost certain that a helicopter could suffer no damage at all if it was to make contact with a drone... the most vulnerable part of a helicopter has to be the tail rotor and i believe most police helicopters have a fenestron to limit noise, but will also protect it from bird strike or small drones...

pɹɐʍoɔ snoɯʎuouɐ

Re: Mac mini SSD

M2 socket? That would be SO sweet!

that's as likely to happen as Steven Avery getting a fair trial......

Apple recently have been baking boards with ram and SSD direct on the main board so is not possible to change or upgrade. so the 120gb SSD is nothing more than a drive for the OS and everything else needs to be saved somewhere safe off the computer because if it breaks and you take it to apple to fix, you get a factory reset computer, even if the drive did not need to be wiped. and a hole in your wallet where the price of a new machine was....

Re: Habitability

the majority of scientists are in no way religious, and scientists will not accept anything as fact without evidence. so to say "Scientists hold a religious belief (unsupported by evidence) that life began in primordial seas" is just not true.

an experiment back in the 1950's by Stanley Miller and Harold Urey where they mixed a chemical solution of methane, ammonia, hydrogen and water in a flask, which is what the earths early atmosphere and seas were theorised was made up from. They subjected it to an electrical charge and the results was they produced organic compounds including amino acids in the flask. As amino acids are the building blocks of DNA it suggests that this is how life began.

this is enough for most scientists to accept that that this is how life most probably started and with no theories that have been demonstrated to indicate otherwise it is reasonable.

If any evidence to the contrary is ever presented then, be sure that because of how science works, scientists will adjust what they accept to be true.

Do the boffins watch a given star for a long time or just randomly say every couple of weeks/months?

they record data continuously over a long period time at section of space, then they trawl through that data looking at the intensity of the stars. they look for dips in intensity and for repetition of them. large short period planets show up first, but over time they find the smaller and multiple planets, and now moons....

its takes more years to study the data than it does to record it....

simple. Just assume every bit of information you put on the internet is public.

I guess you don't understand what a status symbol is. but one thing it is not is something that is "special".

every chav may have an iPhone because it is a status symbol among chavs, but dont think the chavs go and buy them from the crapple store, its an overpriced contract, that gets defaulted on and a payg sim installed in it...

and lets face it, the iphone has always been a premium priced product. anyone who was going out to buy one, it would make little difference if it was £1000 or £800. The price of other handsets is not ever going to come into it.

" The people who spend that much aren't looking for a six-fold increase in utility, they're looking for a six-fold increase in self-image. "

Thats not entirely true.

Take the recently released Samsung Note 9 and if you can tell the difference between that and a Note 8 from a glance as somebody walks past, then you must have eyes like a balled eagle. The people who spend money for self image will pay for brands like apple, and they make sure the visible stuff like the over priced headphones they use with it are in view. The MacBook is under the arm, NOT in any sort of protective case, unless that case has a very big expensive looking logo on it...

Most people do not use anywhere close to a fraction of all the features on a flagship device, that's a given, but once you have used a flagship phone for a while, try using something on the budget end and you soon start to notice the differences. That said, upgrading every year is ridiculous, and those that do are in it for the show off reasons.

there are technologies that you could use to make something that could make a bullet head off in a direction of your choosing that wont blow your own hand to bits and could be lethal to who you aim it at, but the cost of materials and machines would be so high that if you needed a cheap un traceable gun, you could get one at a fraction of the price.
