Windows 7 and Server 2008 end of support: What will change on 14 January?

Ralph76

using windows 7 you are at risk?

based on this advice, can we also "retire" the 8th layer of my network (see OSI model), as it is certainly the most vulnerable and provides the biggest security issues...

TSB meltdown latest: Facepalming reaches critical mass as Brits get strangers' bank letters

Ralph76

Don't mention the war..

It is just a good job the entire world and his dog have not been spamming all 7 Billion humans on the planet with email, adverts, videos, wall posters, billboards and the rest, with news of impending GDPR guidelines.

I mean, if THAT had been the case, TSB would have no excuse whatsoever for such a shocking data leakage.

Luckily, it was only mentioned the once and I think they got away with it...

Airbus plans beds in passenger plane cargo holds

The glaring solution.

I am eagerly awaiting Airbus' announcement next week to outline their "Aeronautical roof rack" system for the transportation of my beloved personal effects as we cruise at 40,000ft in our sleep to New York....

Apple, if you want to win in education, look at what sucks about iPads

Ralph76

I continue to be surprised that the only "big name" manufacturer targeting education with their tablets is one that that has a model whereby individuals are silo'd - you get one instance of your data on each of their devices. Expecting you to buy a pad, a phone and a computer.

Education needs multiple profiles to be available on one device, the opposite of Apple...

The fact that Microsoft have not twigged to this yet boggles my brain...

A domain aware tablet, targeted to schools...... Am I the only one that sees the perfect fit?

Cryptocurrencies kill people and may kill again, says Bill Gates

Ralph76

yeah, I head that - on a documentary, on BBC2..

Ralph76

what a load of tosh

I cannot believe an, allegedly, intelligent man can be so short sighted - unless he has been misquoted of course!

So if weapons and drug manufacturers accepted water as payment, would we ban that too? or how about using magic beans as a currency..

The key here Bill, is to regulate the f***ing people SELLING it, not the currencies that are in circulation. If BAE and the like did not operate so nefariously with who they are willing to sell to, it would cut down an awful lot of issues, immediately.

Stephen Elop and the fall of Nokia revisited

Ralph76

Business Market Niche not spotted?

I was always amazed that a decent work device was not released, and allowed Apple to keep that role. Apple phones are not really designed for work based use, especially with the majority being used in a MS windows Domain based environment. It is a device that sys-admins struggle to manage correctly - although MDM is changing that now.

If Nokia had managed to provide a device that is domain aware, and managed via Group policy (with the help of Microsoft) and the historic reputation of how solid their hardware is. Coupled with the lack of data slurping, I could see Nokia carving a niche out for themselves that the others just cannot touch.

Alas, it didn't go that way, I am still waiting for a device to fill that role and make my job a lot easier, especially as GDPR looms...

Re: Your Network is broken!

We recently had a "creative spark" decide to source, order and even attempted to install a wireless printer....

despite not involving the IT dept up until he had problems, we dutifully obliged in attending the chaps desk to see how we could help...

we were met with a tirade of angry expletives describing how rubbish the printer was and that IT need to get this working NOW as there were lots of important creative things that needed to be created by this creative man, who was being dragged down by un-necessary tech problems..

we saw the problem instantly, it was not plugged in to any power source, or indeed a network/USB connection to receive any printing data.

our creative "dude"'s reply "well why should it need any cables, it is meant to be wireless!?"

Latest Windows 10 preview lets users link an Android to their PC

Chrome anyone

This sounds amazing!.... It will be so refreshing to side load an app that allows one direction sync of my browsing and tries to force me to us MS Edge..

I have had to put up with the pretty seamless 2-way sync within Chrome on my desktop and Chrome on my Android phone and indeed Android tablet.

My suggestion is Tom Hardy. He mixes the smooth get-your-knickers-off look with the hard I-could-kill-you-in-2-seconds look..

I am very surprised that the article didn't suggest it might be some kind of Internet of Everything device!

Thumb Down

Ancient Nick Knowles?

So what you are saying here is that this was the first DIY SOS: The big build?

I just dont buy it. IF 10% of the nation (at the time) attended, as far flung as Scotland (before the kingdoms united I hasten to add) this had to be a pretty big affair.

I think something more significant occured than that....

Facebook won't pull unmarked police plates page

Ralph76

Simple solution for the cops- have a big car auction and sell off all their "unmarked" cars. Next they spend their now bulging budget for cars on some nice new, un-recorded cars.

the public get some well looked after cars with a few doughnut and coffee stains and the perps are no longer one step ahead of the cops.
