Netflix's $1.81 billion Q1 disappoints markets

nuclearstar

Smartflix

So I use smartflix to watch worldwide content on Netflix.

They are about to introduce their paid for service $3.99 a month or $39 a year(free beta is about to end). It has its own interface(better than netflix imo) and active developers working to counter any geoblocking that Netflix enforce.

The only issue for me is it is built on chrome which netflix only allows 720p instead of Edge's 1080p

But I think I am going to go for the Smartflix paid for service. If I didnt, then i would cancel my netflix too.

Prof Hawking to mail postage-stamp space craft to Alpha Centauri using frickin' lasers

nuclearstar

If they are going to send out more than 1 craft, maybe they can use them as relays as some of them become less viable and the candidate for the most likely crafts to reach the system thin out.

Photographer hassled by Port of Tyne for filming a sign on a wall

nuclearstar

Both sides didnt help

I see countless stories about photographers reporting these incidents. 99% of the time they have done nothing wrong in photographing from a public area. But it doesn't help their cause by not communicating in advance that they are going to be there.

If someone turned up outside my house and set up a tripod and started to film then I too would angrily confront the person and possibly call the police.

However if the photographer knocked on my door, told me that he/she was going to be filming the traffic going past my house and told me what project it was for then I would be more than satisfied with that.

He doesn't have to ask the ports permission to film there, it would just be better for everyone if he told them he was going to film there.

Samsung S7 tease suggests phone likes it hot and wet

nuclearstar

This S7 does nothing extra over my Note 4 that I want, so I will be keeping my Note 4 for a while.

The next time I upgrade it will probably be something with a rollout screen.

Windows 10 will now automatically download and install on PCs

nuclearstar

I upgraded my families computers to windows 10 as soon as it came out. Since last July I have had very few issues. None that I didnt have before. Everyone is really happy with the way it looks and feels.

I disabled as much crap as I could, all the notifications and pointless bits.

To be able to go to the windows store, download a few fun free windows games for my mum to play has bee great. Much easier than searching the web for compatible programs.

I understand peoples frustrations who are very happy with Windows 7. it is wrong for Microsoft to push 10 so much and so hard. But overall 10 has been fine for me and everyone I have installed it for. Yes there are privacy issues, but lets not kid ourselves, there are privacy issues in so many more things. I am much more concerned with what the government is trying to snoop on than Microsoft. We know Microsoft is doing it for profits, what is the government doing it for?

Star Wars: Episode VIII delayed by six months

They have done this so Disney can bully all cinema chains to only show their movie for 3 weeks again over xmas.

Star Wars Battlefront: Is this the shooter you’re looking for?

nuclearstar

I like it

If you buy it from origin or for consoles then yes its stupidly expensive.

but I got it from the usual CD key websites fro just under £30,

The first DLC is free so you get 6 maps and a bunch of fun modes.

I have been enjoying it for the last few weeks now, although there are a lack of weapons, and playing as rebels you only get to use a few types of aircraft and no land machines.

I am not buying any DLC though or doing their season pass. To me that is a ripoff. We need to change the industry thinking to stop trying to sell us the same game twice.

Virgin Media hikes broadband, phone prices by five per cent

nuclearstar

VM know full well people will ask to leave. The price rise is aimed at those that don't even bother looking at their bill. Those are the ones that will just pay it.

Those that phone up and ask to leave will be offered a discount package that will probably give you another 12 months on the same price you are paying now.

I phoned up to cancel last year, in fact I phoned to cancel my TV and phone and just keep the broadband. They offered me a discount if I kept the phone line. so my 50meg and phone costs me less than 50 meg on its own. It is all about subscriber numbers.

Facebook! You've got 48 hours to stop tracking people

Re: You get the cookie if you click

But pretty much every website tracks you why single out facebook?

Just look at this very website cookie policy

One of them puts a cookie on your machine that lets

"This tells us which sections of the site a user has visited and allows us to target them with an advert. e.g. read the Servers section, target with a Servers advert."

The cookie is on your machine for 1 month. This is regardless if you log into the register, it is activated on a site visit

nuclearstar

Windows 10 growth stalls during October

nuclearstar

I have had Windows 10 installed on several family machines for months now and my own.

Re: @ nuclearstar Unsurprisingly, it seems someone has

I went in and out of bitcoin (and litecoin) a few times over the years. The most I ever had was 8 bitcoins

But that was back when it was worth £10 per coin and that was home mining. I sold them because £80 to me then was a life saver when I was really struggling for cash, and then sold the gfx cards I used.

That was also back when it was easier to sell bitcoins just via paypal. I know they were worth over a grand at some point but we all know what hindsight is, and besides they were worth less than a dollar just a few months before that.

Now its much harder to actually sell your bitcoins for cold hard cash, you have to go through numerous different foreign exchanges and payment systems to eventually get to a bank transfer or paypal payment without having to pay a huge fee. YOu could just buy stuff with them but really there is no difference than buying it with normal money.

There are UK exchanges where you can buy bitcoins really easily, but to sell them you need to have a lot to sell and send in loads of ID. I have been monitoring the price for ages and its really too volatile for me to be interested in spending my time trying to make a profit.

nuclearstar

Re: Unsurprisingly, it seems someone has

The blockchain doesnt duplicate to everyones wallet, since you can just have a wallet imprinted on a bit of paper, you can think of it just like an account number.

But to get your current balance, you need to download the blockchain. This would take ages, for me when I found an old wallet I had on the D drive of my old laptop, I needed to redownload the whole blockchain, the quickest way I found was to download a recent snapshot of the blockchain from a torrent site, I cant remember the size at the time, probably like 25 gig. This was faster than downloading it via the bitcoin client. Then I just fired up the bitcoin client and got the latest updates to the block chain in an hour or 2 and finally saw my balance, 0.05 bitcoins :(

This is why secure online wallets are probably better for the average joe user, no need to download the blockchain as the wallet host will keep it up to date on their servers. I don't know if you can download your wallet from the host or if it has to stay with them, but if it has to stay with them then there is no reason why you cant create a new offline wallet and just send the online wallet balance to that.

I got out of all the bitcoin stuff a while ago though. I did have in total about £80 worth of bitcoins and just spent it on a new SSD on scan website.

Don't panic. Stupid smart meters are still 50 years away

nuclearstar

I like my smart meter. It means I don't have to go outside to read the values. I changed supplier recently and the new one doesnt officially support smart meters so I still have to send them the numbers. But at least I wont be cold doing it in winter.

Re: Fucking shit

I hate the new site to be honest. Its terrible, reminds me of those websites like buzzfeed.

The annoying navigation bar at the top needs to go too. And why is the page so small on my widescreen monitor, I got a widescreen so I could fit more on it, not to have white space everywhere

Samsung Galaxy Note 4: Spawn of Galaxy Alpha and a Note 3 unveiled

nuclearstar

Had my note 4 for a month too. I am not bothered with it being a small improvement over a note 3, what moron upgrades their phone every year anyway? My previous phone was a note 1, so this is a vast improvement over that.

I don't go swimming with my phone so not bothered about it not being waterproof either.

Fingerprint scanner is perfect, not had any issues with it at all.

Normal charging takes ages. Fast charge is indeed very fast. I don't know why they keep saying 50% in 30 minutes, and not 100% in 60 minutes, because mine charges to 100% in about that time when on fast charge.

Virgin Galactic vows to continue space program after 'serious anomaly'

nuclearstar

Re: Alternative propulsion?

The best thing on the horizon is probably a space elevator. I would say that would still be 30-50 years away. Unless something magical happens with carbon nanotubes in the next 5-10 years then we will all probably be OAP's by the time a relatively safe method of commercial space flight becomes available.

I would probably hope to take some sort of space flight in my retirement, so that 30-50 years would fit in to my time frame.

Doctor Who becomes an illogical, unscientific, silly soap opera in Kill The Moon

nuclearstar

I have to say this series has been incredibly boring.

As a Doctor I think Peter Capaldi is good, just the scripts are so bad that it doesnt reflect well on him.

They are going to the same places as always, 1930's earth, ect. What happened to going to amazing places on the other side of the universe far into the future. What happened to the alien ships and planets.

The moon episode was terrible. It didn't make any sense at all. I was bored and was very close to just turning it off.

I don't think Jenna Coleman will return for the next series (if there is actually going to be one). I think they need to bring back some favorites to get us interested again, Captain Jack, River, come and save Dr Who before BBC cancel the show. Of course the writing will have to be 10 times better even if they do return.

Apple iPhone 6 Plus: GORGEOUS FAT pixel density - but it's WASTED

nuclearstar

Yes but the iphone is an esablished phone, the note was a new form factor and concept. Apple does 1 phone (well 2 now) samsung does 15+ different phones.

Also, apple fanbois buy the new phone each time it comes out, my work colleague got an iphone 5 10 months ago, and now, not even needing a 6, she bought one. the iphone 5 would last another 2 years easy, but because its a new apple phone, one has to get it?

I got my note original 3 years ago, everyone said how big and stupid it was, now the same people are bying iphone6 plus's. I am looking forward to my new Note 4 with better resolution, better build quality(doesnt bend) and way more features.

Windows 7 settles as Windows XP use finally starts to slip … a bit

nuclearstar

My old laptop still uses vista, no reason to upgrade it. the laptop is over 10 years old and I put vista basic on it years ago. I use it as a kind of mini server and IRC and it has an uptime of 45 weeks. No reason at all to upgrade it. Main PC is W7 though and I expect it will be this until W9 has proved itself when it comes out.

Top Gun display for your CAR: Heads-up fighter pilot tech

nuclearstar

Re: So many things to consider.

Pilots are on autopilot most of the time anyway, except when they take off and land, and no one really starts to text while they are parking or pulling out from a junction, they normally crash because they drift lanes or run red lights.

HUD information is no different from road signs really, as long as you dont have to take your eyes complelty off the road, peripheral vision is pretty good if its close to the focusing point of your eye, its when people have to look down into their lap that they lose all sight of the road.

But this app shouldnt be able to reply to texts, unless its voice reply only.

Judge: Google owes patent troll a 1.36% cut of AdWords' BEELLIONS

A BBC-by-subscription 'would be richer', MPs told

nuclearstar

I must admit I watch a lot of BBC. I love the nature and science programs, I like the comedy, the Drama is extremely good. I actually dont watch ITV or channel 4 or any of the other non BBC Free to air packages. I have Virgin TV but I dont even watch that anymore. I think I am going to get rid of that soon.

I probably would pay for BBC, as long as they didnt put adds on there, if they put adds on then well, I will just get my content from the interwebs

Virgin Galactic's supersonic space ship in 71,000-ft record smash

Sure you won't achieve orbit, but it is probably the closest thing to being in space for normal(by normal i mean rich) people in their lifetime.

I would love to go on this flight personally, no way am I paying 250k for it though. I could just about manage it if I sold my house, then I wouldnt have anywhere to live.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3: Once, twice, three times - a Very Large Phone™

nuclearstar

My contract is up for renewal in January, so I will be swapping my Note 1 out with the Note 3.

I am still very happy with my note, its still brilliant, but the slightly larger screen size and more powerful hardware is worth the upgrade. My note 1 sometimes feels a little laggy on the latest version of the OS.

Tell me why I don't like Moon days: Bob Geldof heads into SPAAACE

nuclearstar

He is constantly in our faces about giving money to charity, I say he should auction off his own seat on this space flight. After all, what is more important, him going on a 5 minute trip into space, or food for 1000's of children in Africa. I will let Bob decide

Kiwis (finally) confirm software ban under new patent law

nuclearstar

I don't get code patents at all. They are set instructions and commands already in the public domain, weather it be in C# php or java. The commands are already there for anyone to use and put together. How can you patent something that once compiled, no one can see unless they have the source code.

Inventions are one thing because you can see all the components of an invention and copy it exactly. With a compiled program(I am in no way a "coder") I understand you cant see the exact code. So if someone wants to create a slide to unlock interface for themselves then they would have to write their own way of doing it. To me that is not copying what the other person is doing, to me that is competition.

I thought my net went down, until I noticed IRC was still chugging along as normal. Then I thought it was virgin media DNS as by the time I entered googles DNS in my system instead, it appeared to work, so i blamed virgin media, my bad :)

Only found out it was google today by reading this.

BT earmarks super-speedy 300Mbit/s broadband for 50 exchanges

nuclearstar

Pointless

This is completley pointless, what residential person needs 300mbps downstream? I have virgin media and am on the 100 meg package, it far far exceeds my requirements for download speed, and I consider myself to be a heavy internet user.

With everyone sharing home videos via facebook and huge 100meg pictures, they should now be concentrating on upgrading peoples upstream as well as bringing those stuck on lower speeds up to catch up with the rest of us.

I am only interested in improving my upstream now, sure i can download my sisters wedding video in about 5 minutes, but it took her ages to upload in the first place.

This is why we are so far behind in infrastructure, idiots making the wrong decisions and spending money in the wrong place

UK sitting on top of at least 50 years of shale gas – report

nuclearstar

Wow great, low cost gas right on our doorstep, and trillions of cubic metres of it, so we dont have to import expensive gas from Russia.

bills go down? no, bills will beat best the same as what they are now, just these companies profits will be even higher, and how many of these energy companies are foreign owned, who pay bugger all corporation tax?

UK.gov blows a fuse at smart meter stall, sets new 2020 deadline

nuclearstar

Re: Happy with mine

To be honest I don't have the gas display on at all. I am not worried too much about gas as I will have the heating on when its needed, so no I don't really have a use for the gas meter other than the readings being sent automatically.

The novelty will probably wear off, also having your rads set low in rooms you dont use doesn't make much of a difference to gas consumption(see I can tell that now I have a display). If you have multiple rooms that you dont need but use 1 room a lot then you would probably be better off using an electric heater for that single room and turning off your central heating all together.

nuclearstar

Happy with mine

I got a smart meter from Eon a few months ago, they sent a letter through the door asking if anyone wanted one. I did so I requested one and it took them less than half an hour to remove my old gas and electricity meters and replace them with the new ones. No cost to me at all and all my readings get sent automatically to the supplier a few times a month.

The meter and wireless display that is in my living room cost 16p a year to run and was of course installed and supplied for free, You dont even have to have the wireless display running if you dont want to.

Regarding energy saving, I have found that it does indeed help energy saving, for instance I found my microwave was drawing too much power and was faulty, so the meter helped me in that way. Also, I left the iron on once and only noticed when I walked into my living room and saw the display showing up as red(using lots of energy) after hunting around for a few minutes I found the iron on in the spare room, I could have left that on for days if it wasn't for the smart meter, so already have justified several years "running costs"

I really don't see any reason why anyone would object to having this installed, except maybe security concerns with the unit itself, I don't know why anyone would want to hack my smart meter though and cant see what they would get out of it.

It really has opened my eyes on what appliances cost a lot of money, boiling a full kettle takes more energy than a full washing machine cycle at 40 degrees, not what I expected.

Are you being robbed of sleep by badly designed servers?

nuclearstar

Real Point?

I saw the headline and started to read this with interest, but it soon became apparent that the "article" was really nothing useful for sysadmins at all. It just tells us stuff we already know, its not a solution, its not a tip. I didn't find it useful at all.

If anything, the article has told me that I shouldn't be using physical servers with a single OS installed onto a single physical server. Instead of telling vendors to include IPKVM as standard on their servers, you should be purchasing a set of hardware with virtualisation, which will have built in redundancy. No longer would you need to get up in the middle of the night to reboot server. just connect to the management console and check that it has migrated to a working physical server.

Google Glass will SELF-DESTRUCT if flogged on eBay

nuclearstar

Re: Overreaction?

Pretty sure that this wont stand up in court if it was on the commercial device. Just because they put stuff in their terms of sale/service, it doesn't automatically make it legal and binding.

If that was the case then I could sell a product, include a huge terms of service document and put "by buying this device, you agree to sell me your home and car for £1 whenever I want" in tiny writing in the middle of the ToS.

Ban drones taking snaps of homes, rages Google boss... That's HIS job, right?

nuclearstar

Double Standards

Pretty much double standards, google has a front picture of my house, they also have an aerial view, and when you zoom in closer, they have a 3D view from 4 different angles, bing has a crapper version of that.

I don't really care that much to be honest. If someone flies a drone in my garden and peer into my rooms, I am going to get a baseball bat and smash it to bits.

Review: Renault Zoe electric car

nuclearstar

yeah range

I was seriously considering buying one of these, I was trying to look for the range everywhere, they really make it hard to find this, its one of the most important aspects of an electric car.

That is the only annoying thing about these companies advertising electric cars, if they were all just up front and told us is a nice clear place what the range is then I would respect them a lot more.

As my daily drive is 30 miles to work and 30 miles back, this obviously isnt suitable for me. I am going to give it another 3 or 4 years. I am hoping by then that they bring out an electric car with at least 150 miles to a charge. Then and only then will it be good enough for me to have as a daily drive.

Amazon yanks SimCity download from store

nuclearstar

They are not threatening to ban, that is a rumor, they posted on twitter on their official account that they are not banning people requesting refunds.

The game however is stupid, I was one of the 1 star reviews on amazon, I havnt been able to play at all. I have been using a US VPN to activate the game because of having to wait until Friday to play in the UK is stupid. The simple fact is, they never made enough servers, every one of them is basically full now, and thats still with the whole of the gamers in the UK not even having the game released yet. If it wasnt for battlefield3 i wouldnt touch origin or EA games, I only got simcity because I have to have origin installed anyway for BF3.
