Microsoft cries foul over UK gaming deal blocker but it's hard to feel sorry for them

Rathernicelydone

I remember hearing Brad Smith's interview on BBC R4 and laughing at how melodramatic he was being. This dude was senior legal counsel of MS when they were subject to the largest fine in tech history for anti competitive behaviour so I found his complaints a bit rich. I have both a gaming PC and a PS5 so have no skin in the game when it comes to this takeover but MS should be focusing on making and publishing great first party games rather than attempting to buy everyone because they have few good exclusives for their platform.

BT's Wi-Fi Disc ads banned because there's no evidence the things work

Re: Standby for downvotes!

I have a terrible Vodafone supplied router (the fibre service itself is very good) so I bought the BT Whole Home discs and had them all connected via cable back to the router and my wifi is both rock solid and with good coverage. My home is not large but still required 3 for good coverage (including the bedroom in the loft) but they are reliable and worked out of the box. A pretty decent product from BT.

Vodafone: Yes, we slurp data on customers' network setups, but we do it for their own good

Rathernicelydone

Re: And that is why

I AM a Vodafone broadband customer and I have the Voda supplied router switched off because it is really crap. I have a BT Whole Home mesh wifi system all connected to the Voda router via Cat5. So dodgy slurping aside I have generally been happy with the Voda service - at least they don't traffic shape me even when I am downloading torrents at peak times.

I really enjoyed using DDG but the only issue I have with it is when searching for Shopping results. It only brings back resuts from Amazon and I actively try not to use Amazon if I can. Is there a way to make the Shopping results more varied in DDG?

Re: More of the same

Here is my consultant joke:

A farmer is tending his sheep when a car stops near him. Out comes a man wearing an M&S suit and tie and carrying a laptop. He boldly declares to the farmer: “If I can tell you how many sheep you have in your herd can I have one of your sheep”?

The farmer is intrigued and replies in the affirmative.

The man opens his laptop and works on it for a few minutes before declaring that the farmer has 134 sheep.

The farmer confirms that he has and invites him to take one.

The man grabs an animal and is walking back towards his car when the farmer says: “You are a consultant aren’t you?”.

The man turns around and says: “Yes how did you know?”.

The farmer says: “You came here uninvited, told me something I already knew and then charged me for it. Now I would like my sheepdog back”.

This also reminds me of Freelancer particularly when you enter a station and have 3D characters talking to you. For someone who prizes the narrative even more than the ability to explore Freelancer was great. This seems quite similar and for those that don't want to manage the complexities of a full on space sim it may be ideal.

Ofcom 'fair deal' action: UK mobile networks agree to slash contract charges when lock-in ends – except Three

Re: 3 aren't entirely dodgy

I also like Three’s PAYG tariff which is simple and easy to understand. The fact that you can also call abroad for the same price as in the UK (at least for the country I wish to get in touch with) is a great bonus which means I don’t have to pay extra for international calls like I needed to with Vodafone.

Re: Vodafone

I have been lucky never to have had a problem with my Vodafone Broadband service and therefore have never had to call their support people. The service itself gives me good speeds with no throttling at any time so am very happy with it. Their router is crap though which is why its wifi is off and I have BT Whole Home Wifi discs peppered around the house. Here's hoping I haven't jinxed my service and have to end up calling them...

Rathernicelydone

Re: Are you sure?

I have my mum on Three's 321 PAYG offering and it is simple to understand (3p calls including to certain international destinations, 2p text, 1p per Mb data). The website makes it easy to administer the account and the data speeds are much better than my company phone which is on O2.

While everyone coos at the promise of 5G, UK network Three asks if it can tempt you with 4G+

Rathernicelydone

Re: Upgrade?

I am on O2 which is also what GiffGaff uses - be careful with using O2 as they don't seem to have enough capacity to handle larger volume of devices. Without fail when I am at London Paddington during rush hour I cannot get any data services at all. Strong signal but no data.

Re: I'm with Vodafone

Same here. I joined Vodafone broadband whilst an employee on their trial and kept it even when I left the company. Service is generally reliable and I get a stable 60Mb download speed with little contention although perhaps that may be down to the lack of customers they have! When I have used their chat function to request changes such as outbound calls barred it has been done - there are very few things they can't do over chat. Router is completely rubbish though - I turned off the wifi and connected a 3 disc BT Whole Home Wifi for good coverage at home. Also no billing issues thank god!

BT hikes prices for third time in 18 months

Rathernicelydone

Vodafone

As a user of the Vodafone broadband service I have to say it is rock solid - no outage so never had to call their support number. A solid 60Mb download and 19Mb upload and I get this at any time of the day or night with no download limits. I have just signed up to a new contract for 18 months of the Fibre 76 product for £30 a month including line rental which I consider quite the bargain.

However their router is utterly crap with poor wifi coverage - I have Ethernet cables running off it to the rest of the house and a range extender that has much better wifi coverage than the router. Factor investment into a better router/range extender as part of any decision to move to Vodafone.

Reg slips claws across Nokia's sexy sixties handsets, fondles flagship too

Rathernicelydone

It seems Nokia's engineering is once again shining through and this can only be a good thing. Unfortunately as the author mentions you are investing in the eco system too and for £79 that may not be as much of a concern but for £500 it definitely would be. Having used WP I like the OS but if the apps I want are not available I wont invest in it.

Good move to make the licenses free particularly if they are targeting low cost handset makers as the growth is all in the emerging markets. Why it took them this long I have no idea.

Returning a laptop to PC World ruined this bloke's credit score. Today the Supreme Court ended his 15-year nightmare

Rathernicelydone

I find it completely extraordinary that HFC thought it prudent to let this matter go all the way to the supreme court for such a simple mistake. They will now have to pay their own and possibly the plaintiff's very high legal costs. I assume they were very badly advised by their lawyers and should not only fire them but sue them. If they didn't and this was due to their greed it serves them right.

TV sales PLUMMET. But no one's prepared to say what we all know

Rathernicelydone

I don't watch a lot of TV but do watch a lot of TV programmes that I have downloaded on my tablet. My 40" 1080i screen from 5 years back seems perfectly adequate for TV broadcasts (most of which seem to be in 720p anyway) and also for Blu-Ray. The TV in our room is now for communal/social watching of films, sports events etc. It has become a special occasion device for me rather than an everyday device.

As with other people on here I doubt I will replace my TV any time soon. I haven't seen 4k in action and may consider upgrading in a couple of year's time but the difference would have to be substantial. I would rather spend the money on a nice speaker set-up instead (TV speakers seem to be absolute garbage).

I have noticed that hardware seems to have outstripped software substantially. My PC is around 3 years old (an overclocked i7) and the only things I have changed is adding an SSD and a new graphics card (along with new power supply to support it). I can now play any modern game and the load times for Windows 7 and programs are astonishingly quick. I cannot see me upgrading the PC (e.g. new board/chip etc) for at least another 3 years.

Likewise my HTC One that I bought over a year ago I wont change for another year at least as every app and Android itself runs perfectly.

I once thought the hardware refresh cycle would mean significant spend continuously to keep my gadgets bang up to date but I'm sure my wallet is grateful for not having to do that!

So. Farewell then Steelie Neelie: You were WORSE than USELESS

Rathernicelydone

A bit of a hatchet job from Andrew Orlowski who's pieces I usually enjoy reading. To be honest the only thing I can recall Kroes working on is the whole mobile roaming issue and also harmonising the EU's telecoms regulation which I can't imagine is a bad thing.

I'm no expert on Net Neutrality but from the piece I gather Andrew is not happy that she didn't pursue this area more vigorously? In which case I suggest this is an area way outside her pay grade as its a global concern and her focus should be on EU wide issues.

I'm not defending Kroes but if you look at the uselessness of OFCOM than in comparison perhaps her impact isn't as useless as Andrew suggests.

I have a company phone which uses the EE network and at peak times at Paddington mobile Internet is completely unusable. Perhaps EE should focus on better peak time capacity management since it is pointless having fast Internet access if the local cell is completely saturated.

Superb game

I didn't play the original but have been playing this game and have really been enjoying it. Ended up ditching Prototype 2 for this instead. Great storyline, excellent voice acting, very satisfying combat, lots of loot (better weapons, armour, amulets as well as upgradeable weapons), puzzles that are not too difficult and great level designs. The boss battles are stunning and the game is just so damn huge...

Not sure about 95% but it a defo 90%+ game.
