Telstra costed fibre to the premises before it was Telstra

Fluffy Bunny

Re: ADSL happened

An interesting point. I rolled out several building sized networks in the early 90's. It was hideously expensive and only something you'd do in those days for secure networks. So ADSL allowed the telcos to roll out high speed networks (up to 21 MBPS is no slouch) without all that expensive recabling.

Technology improvements (principally economies of scale, but also genuine improvements such as connectors that don't cost $8 per fibre) In other words ADSL was a great filler until it became cost-effective to do a general fibre roll-out.

My only objection to the NBN remains the fact that the taxpayer is funding this, instead of the customers.

Re: Oh Australia

Actually, this is a misunderstanding. Telstra was rolling out large amounts of copper to it's backbone service.

2015 hottest ever. Except for 2010. And 1997. Oh, and let's not forget the medieval warm period, or the Roman warm period, or the Minoan warm period. Don't worry your pretty little head about that, we have the very best scientists rewriting history to remove those inconvenient truths.

And be very careful not to tell anyone that we're just in the latest of the interglacials, and a rather weak one at that.

Re: False premise leads to false results

Interestingly, quantum physicists don't accept quantum physics. That isn't to say that they don't accept quantum mechanics. It has made far too many accurate predictions to not be true. But they don't accept the exact same quantum mechanics. There is a tremendous amount of churn in the field, with everybody developing their own specific improvements.

The same applies to relativity. The field is tremendously useful, but it is also very active with everybody providing their own unique contribution. Again, many accurate predictions demonstrate the worth of the theory. Gravitational lensing, and such.

And this is where climate science demonstrates that it isn't actually a science. Although it has made many "predictions" (actually they call them projections because they aren't good enough to call predictions), none of them has come true. Only in climate science do they average garbage and expect to get gold out.

Anybody that points out the failure to predict anything is shouted down. The worst insult is "not the right sort of climate scientist". There are two fatal, false, predictions:

1) computer models all predict far too much warming - two, three, even more, times what is actually found on a long-term basis

2) none of the climate scientists predicted the pause, which has lasted for 18 years an 8 months now.

Finally, in a real science, failed theories are modified in the light of new evidence. Only in climate science is the data modified to fit the theories.

Re: re: I still don't understand the irrational fear of nuclear power though.

"just bury it in the ground so it poisons our children" storage systems. That's not irrational though

If you just run it through a fast breeder reactor, it solves most of your problems:

1) you can now use 100% of the uranium, instead of the 1% that is U235

2) there is no need to store 99% of the uranium because it is no longer highly radioactive waste, but burnt through to the end of it's cycle and therefore not very radioactive.

Not at all irrational.

"The regulators don't just put out a level that is *impossible* to meet."

Actually they do. Europe has long had much lower levels for various radiation, chemical exposures, etc. I don't think the objective science supports that. And look at the stupidities of the US EPA regulations lately.

"Don't blame the regulators for the Volkswagen Group breaking the law and cheating. You can blame them for a number of other things, but not that."

Actually, I'm not entirely sure that VW are cheating. The regulations are quite clear: set up the vehicle under test exactly this way. Run the test. What happens after that isn't covered. In other words, VW complied with the requirements of the test. Nothing in the regulations says the machine always has to work that way.

Fluffy Bunny

Re: they killed it

No, Labor killed it. In two ways: creating an obscene monopoly to do a job that could have been done much better with a simple subsidy on ISPs; and by overspeccing the deployment

The vast majority of the cost to run a connection to the home is in the last mile. That is where the connection is split from a local node into a cable for each residence. Replacing perfectly good copper, which already runs at 24 BPS in most cases, with fiber, and the customer then only buying a 25MBPS service, is a complete waste of money. Instead, Labor decided to deploy a 100MBPS service to everybody, 95% of whom didn't want it. And 100% of whom weren't paying for it.

Imbeciles!

Tax "Deeming Rate"

My suggestion is a "Deeming Rate" on money sent overseas. Just like with retirees, whose money is "deemed" to earn income at a certain rate, and benefits are calculated on that deemed rate - even if they deliberately kept it in a low-income account to avoid this.

So, subsidiary of multi-national company x, that send $y billion to Ireland/Singapore/etc which pays at a minimal tax rate, will be deemed to owe tax at the $A rate. Any shortfall will be owed to the Australian tax collectors.

Just my humble suggestion.

"would this protect me, err, him from this 3 strikes malarkey?"

It's a little known fact of law, that it isn't illegal to commit a crime, only to get caught doing so. So, for instance if I were to go through a red light on my girlfriend's bycicle, there would be no penalty. On the other hand, if I were to do it in my Ferarri, everybody on the road would be texting my licence plate to old plod.

Oh, and if you were to say it's against the law to text while driving... well the law can be blind to certain infractions if it wants. After all, it's only a minor little text, whereas if I were to text while driving my Ferarri... the walls of the gaol would be crumbling down before I was let out.

Why would you bother? It has already been demonstrated, very effectively, that the world is not warming from CO2 emissions. It can't, CO2 has a tiny effect on keeping warmth in the atmosphere. A much bigger impact is the upwards convection of warm air at the equators taking heat away and allowing it to cool in the upper atmosphere.

The rabbit-proof fence ran right through Australia, from north to south. It worked so long as the governments paid for stockmen to patrol it, keeping it in good order, but more importantly stopping rabbits from burrowing underneath it. Eventually, rabbits did get through and governments were less willing to deal with a problem that had simply become endemic (the rabbit-trap salesmen would typically visit a farm twice - once to drop off a breeding pair of bunnies, a few weeks later to point out the problem the farmer may not have noticed and offer a few traps at a really good price).

However the toad-proof fence is different because it is used on a much more localised scale - each farmer would fence off his own dam. Secondly, and a key difference, it would still work in an area that has been infested because it denies the toads the ability to breed.

Re: @skelband

"So what we *need* to do is to "

No, it isn't. Reducing our consumption will only work so far, and at enourmous cost to our poor. Every year you read about how poor citizens in the UK and Europe are freezing to death in their homes because they can't afford to heat them.

A much better approach would be to extend our use of nuclear fission and develop new sources, such as fusion and satelite-solar that will increase our energy supply at an affordable rate.

"or actually do something about the problem?"

This is a big one. What, exactly, is the problem? Is it global warming, because I can show you graphs that show the planet hasn't warmed in 18 years. From real data, not that "homogenised" fudge they spout constantly in the media. Global warming hasn't been a problem for so long that the term had to be replaced with "climate change" - a good one, that because that's exactly what climates do - change.

Or is the problem more closely related to a political/religious argument to force us down a particularly hard green path that would see tens of millions die from cold because they couldn't heat their homes?
