Fun fact: GPS uses 10 bits to store the week. That means it runs out... oh heck – April 6, 2019

Renault has recently released a patch for their R-Link satnavs to fix this, and it was applicable to my wide’s car which is not even 4y old.

But at least Renault offers a web-based satnav update service. Audi asks 300€ for each SD card update for my car! No wonder Carolay and Android Auto are so popular...

Smartwatches: I hate to say ‘I told you so’. But I told you so.

Re: MS Band

I totally agree. Applying the article logic to phones would mean that smartphones would never have been successful. It took a long while (I had an early Windows Mobile phone which was terrible), but it eventually became commodity. I would not burry smart watches yet.

Nokia Lumia 625: Quality budget 4G phone ... but where's UK's budget 4G?

The Lumia 820 has come down in price, at approx the same price as this new 625. The 820 should be a tad faster but possibly with a shorter battery life. Not too sure about any build-quality difference, though.

Apple beckons fanbois back into its golden era... of, er, 2010

Great! This explains what I experienced a couple of days ago on my iPad 1 stuck on iOS 5. I will try installing a few apps that were no longer available on iOS 6...

Compatibility?

Although Android softs run in a VM, I understand there are all sort of software compatibility issues on devices not running on ARM CPUs. That's what I gather from the feedback on the Razr-I and some cheap chinese slabs.

Microsoft said to be building Apple TV adversary

Re: Yeah, but...

I actually find the Apple TV (1st gen) great and even managed to convince some of my relatives to buy one.

Great to listen to one's iTunes music library, to watch one's slideshows and it has a decent VOD service (cheaper than my cable operator service, and much simpler to use).

Admittedly, it is not the right box to use to watch ripped videos and downloaded MKVs, but I doubt that's what MicroSoft intends to deliver.

Slideshow: A History of Intel x86 in 20 CPUs

Having had a very early clone of the PC/XT (Olivetti something, running with a 8088 CPU) in the late 80s, after having had fun with a ZX81 and then an MSX, I also have great souvenirs of 4-colour graphics and silent games (no sound card included).

I actually had an EGA graphics card (640*350 in 16 colors!), but no software I had could use its potential.

I also had Windows 1.0 disks but cannot really say I managed to use it. The first really usable version of Windows was 2.1 and then there were only a very limited number of software that made use of it, Aldus Pagemaker being one of the few ones.

My next PC was a 486 33MHz with 8MB of RAM! It was actually more powerful than the diskless Sun workstation I was using at University. With a DOS Extender, I could already use up to 4GB of virtual memory for my image processing courses... Those were the days...

LG Vu 5in Android phone-tablet review

Having an iPad (4:3 screen) as well as an iPhone 4s and a BB PlayBook (3:2 and 16:9 screens), I find the former aspect ratio better suited to browsing, photos and apps in general.

Now that, does not mean that I think this Vu is a very practical phone. But coming from an Xperia X10 mini, I guess it's normal to find most current smartphones too big.

Retailer leaks iPad Mini price list starting at £200

A 8GB Cellular Mini iPad would be a nice, affordable compromise between the iPad 3G/4G and the iPhone.

I loved the BlackBerry PlayBook form factor but the lack of cellular connectivity defeated a bit the purpose of the small size. There is now a PlayBook 4G but its battery life and wireless sensitivity do not seem great. If I had not an iPad 3G already, I'd be very tempted by this new model.

Battery life

A smaller SIII with otherwise the same specs would have had a pitiful battery life.

Cables

Don't forget to keep 10% of the budget (or even more) for the super high-grade low-loss cables. How about 8000$ for phono interconnects? http://www.mitcables.com/available-in-stores/audio-interconnects/oracle-ma-x-phono-interconnect.html

Re: 7GB vs 25GB

Yes, that's the main reason I installed SkyDrive next to DropBox on my iPad.

Plus, the photo sharing is dead simple and the slideshow view is quite nice. Might use this to share galleries when Apple pulls the plug on MobileMe.

OLED to take 0.02% of TV sales through 2014

What about FULL LED?

Moved to a 46" LCD screen with edge LED backlighting and I must admit I am disappointed by the obvious clouding effect. LED brings lower power consumption hence slimmer tellies but is a step backwards in image quality in my opinion.

FULL LED and OLED have been promised for long but do not seem to be able to materialise at a decent price.
