Et tu, Brute? Then fail, Caesars: When it's hotel staff, not the hackers, invading folks' privacy

ZPO

Re: Caesars have proven themselves incompetent

It is highly unlikely that firearms are banned by policy in the hotel space. Firearms are banned from the floors of casinos (at least they were last time I was there). There are thousands of people quite legally carrying concealed firearms in Las Vegas on a daily basis. Spoiler alert - nobody gets hurt.

People forcing their way into hotel rooms while not wearing obvious uniforms and presenting legitimate identification (verified with the front desk) are going to get shot at some point. It will be an interesting court case when that happens. The policies needs to be modified. Hopefully the video of hotel "security" doing a lot more than a visual check will result in actual change instead of a couple BS press releases.

Voicemails of:

Hello, this is the doctors office. The health department requires you to come in to discuss the results of your STD tests...

This is Detective Smith at the police department. We need to schedule an appointment to interview you about these child abuse allegations...

Should fix the problem with listening to Voicemails on speaker rather quickly.

US websites block netizens in Europe: Why are they ghosting EU? It's not you, it's GDPR

ZPO

Why bother?

Do the US newspapers derive enough revenue from web site visit or located in the EU to make GDPR compliance profitable? If not, then just block the EU from access and carry on.

The EU can make decrees for their subjects. The rest of the world can do the cost benefit analysis and make their own decisions.

ZTE now stands for 'zero tech exports' – US govt slaps 7-year ban on biz

ZPO

Re: "...ZTE...cut off....from American manufacturers."

Selling products through shady middleman to avoid export controls/bans/sanctions will get found out eventually. Then the US side of the transactions gets visited by LWGs (Lawyers With Guns - ie FBI agents - they look so spiffy in their blue windbreakers). Depending on where the equipment is transiting, the other side of the transaction may get visited by men wearing balaclavas and NVGs.

On the US side, the end game is federal criminal charges against individuals. Those instantly pierce the corporate veil and everyone wants to flip and trade up for a deal. On the foreign side, the local government gets some US aid to ensure prosecution and the offenders end up in a prison that is a few rungs down the ladder from hell on earth.

For most tech executives, that doesn't sound like much fun.

Net neutrality advocates freak out as lobbyists pull rug from California's draft net neutrality law

In today's news, Californians realized their fine upstanding congresscritters have campaigns to run, "speaking fees" to collect, and "fact finding missions" that require travel to exotic locations. All paid for by lobbyists and interest groups.

In other words... those congresscritters are taking care of their true constituents. The ones that keep them in office to peddle influence and line their pockets.

This sounds like a perfect opportunity for a plucky startup. Artists register and provide ownership information. Plucky startup submits that information in the format required by multiple the copyright office and any other source used by media companies. Only 2 options for satellite internet

There are only two options for satellite internet in the US. Hughesnet and Excede. Unless these other ISPs intend to recreate all the space and ground infrastructure, they will be reselling services from one of those two.

Given the number of subscribers involved, I expect it will overload the Ka spot beam for that area on the HTS birds used by each provider.

Austinites outraged as Google Fiber tears up Texas capital

ZPO

Having built a fiber network in Austin....

The city government agencies were the main impediment to both speed of completion and good construction practices. Random city inspectors would come up with requirements out of thin air.

The population of Austin is also a problem. Far too many California transplants and other liberals. They will whine and pitch a fit about anything that offends their delicate sensibilities or intrudes on their soy-based vegan yoga chakra energy alignment or whatever they're attached to this week.

Stockholders...

If I'm a stockholder, I want to know that the best qualified candidate who applied for a given position is extended an offer 100% of the time. I don't care what color their skin is, how the pray (or if they pray), who they love, where they were born, or how their plumbing is configured. All I care about is the qualifications and abilities of staff to efficiently generate revenue and thus profit. That is equality...

This sounds like Affirmative Action and quota systems all over again. In the US, there is a good body of law rejecting quota based programs and differing standards based on race/creed/color/sex/etc - https://www.doi.gov/pmb/eeo/cases/reverse .

Americans massively back call for more police body camera tech

ZPO

Re: Wearing the cameras is only part of the solution

Ownership, control, and release authority of the footage is probably the biggest issue with law enforcement field video (dash cams and body cams). Presently, in most jurisdictions, the field video is owned and controlled by the police department. Footage that doesn't fully support or exonerate a LEO's actions won't be released except by court order. I'm certain the police unions will scream bloody murder if the footage is held by an outside organization not under the direct control of the law enforcement agency.

We had similar issues with connection speed via satellite in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Posters have already mentioned using a squid caching proxy which is spot on. Additionally, that squid cache, with properly tuned TCP settings, will greatly help the XP machines with small receive windows (RWIN). Google "Bandwidth Delay Product" for more information. If I recall correctly, psc.edu has some of the best collected information.

Another item that makes a world of difference is placing a couple caching DNS servers on the local network. Given how chatty Windows machines are with DNS queries, moving those off the satellite network and on to a local caching DNS server makes a world of difference.

Finally, configure all the machines to download their Windows updates via the squid cache. Simply setting the "Internet Options" to use the cache doesn't do it. There were a couple of additional settings that had to be entered via the command line to make Windows Update use the cache.

Once these three items were implemented, it was a night and day difference on the satellite connection. While it still wasn't a terrestrial multi-megabit DSL-like experience, things flowed much more smoothly and perceived speed was up by around a factor of 8-10.

Cellular architectures not great for TV: study

ZPO

How much did they pay the department of obvious studies for this?

This is a study that might as well have said that fire is hot and ice is cold. A single stream broadcast at the multi-KW level is going to cover a much larger area with a single transmission. This iisn't rocket science. It is how the networks are built with different goals in mind.

Top US Senator to Apple, Google: 'Curb your spy planes'

ZPO

Schumer thinks this is new???

Given how much he blathers on aviation issues he doesn't understand, I think he heard "plane" and thought he needed to say something.

Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quads (DOQQs) have been available from the US Geologic Survey (USGS) for years. Some states/counties allow you to download them for free. Otherwise they can be readily purchased on DVD. They have more than enough resolution for a slightly trained imagery analyst to pick out and target critical infrastructure.

My county, like Anonymous Bosch's (above), also does full aerial photogrammetry sweeps every five years. This is quite common though the frequency varies by state/county/city. Such sweeps are already used to locate structures built without permits. My county is going through the process now and sending out inspectors.

I find it much more likely that Google, Apple, and other would simply license the existing photogrammetry datasets rather than refly everywhere. In certain targeted areas not already covered by LIDAR or other 3D aerial mapping, they might do selective area coverage.

Hanging's too good for 'em - so what do you suggest?

LWOP Plus More.....

If the goal is to avoid executions, then LWOP (Life WithOut Parole) is a required starting point. It has the same effect of ensuring they do not reoffend against the population at large. Assuming a desire to prevent permanent physical damage in case a conviction is later overturned, several options present themselves. At all times, prisoners on an LWOP sentence must be able to request an approved method of suicide. I have a feeling many may opt out early. Failing that...

1) Make the prison population in general and the LWOP inmates in particular self-supporting.

- Farming their own food and raising livestock.

- Building prison furnishings, sewing uniforms, etc.

- Building new prison facilities.

2) Make the prison population useful to society

- Prison industry - The classic US "making license plates" is just the starting point.

- Public service projects - Bring back the chain gangs.

3) Make prison an undesirable destination - Take the lead from Sheriff Joe Arpaio

- No air conditioning

- Tents outside surrounded by fences and barbed wire

- No TV, no tobacco, no gym equipment.

- The only way to get privileges such as increased and better rations is through work.

- Minimum 12hr daily work day. Seven days a week.

Cut the costs, make them useful, make prison suck severely.
