Re: how else does she keep her waist so trim and her feminine bulges so pointy?

And she certainly looked trim and very pointy.

Easily the best of the season, acting wise if not quite story wise. Capaldi was on fire as an angry Timelord, he really let the darkness of the character show. Coupled with Maisie William's Ashildir looking terrified it summed up a terrific 45 minute episode.

I have never been a fan of the impossible girl, but I have to admit that last night, as she died, I did hope for one second that the Doctor would save her. Seems that was not to be and Clara will join Adric as one of the shows dead and truly dead (although didn't Adric come back in one of the Big Finish productions?).

VPNs

I presumed that if I used a VPN to access web sites the IP address provided by the VPN would be logged not mine. For example, VPN turns on as soon as I connect to the internet. It gives me a IP address from London or Manchester even though I am in the Highlands. If I then do a google search, with the VPN turned on, doesn't google record that search as coming from the VPNs IP address (and therefore location)?

Confused - help please

I hope you will all allow a very basic question from someone who doesn’t know too much about the differences between AMD and Intel processors.

I have always bought Intel model chips for my PCs. I am a believer in the model which states that you buy the most expensive processor and motherboard and then build your machine around those components, I have never bought or knowing used a PC with an AMD processor chip inside it (and I doubt that I would be able to tell if I did. I have nothing against AMD but that is the way it has worked out for me. We use Intel machines at work, I use an Intel desktop at home and on the go I have an i5 laptop and an Intel Atom tablet.

Ever since I have had MS Vista I have used a gadget which showed me the loading on each processor (not for any other reason than I thought it looked good). When using these gadgets, I noticed that on a dual core machine it showed 4 processors. On the system tab in settings it showed two processors but 4 processors with hyper threading. I had no reason to believe otherwise so I always expected that an AMD chip would do the same (i.e. if it had 4 processors, I would see eight cores due to hyper threading.

Is this article saying that on an AMD processor, if it states 8 cores, the gadget I use would report 8 processors? Do Intel hyper-threads=AMD cores or have I missed the point of this entirely?

I know that this is probably a dumb question but that is how it seems to read to me. Could someone try and explain in plain English for me?

Example:

Is a 4 4.0 GHz core Intel i5 (for example) = 8 core 4.0 GHz AMD

I know this is a bit of a TL:DR but any help would be much appreciated.

Honest Question

Since it seems to be pretty much accepted that Microsoft (and others) all have agreements with NSA and other three initial US Gov Agencies, maybe we should give them credit for being open and honest about slurping, recording and forwarding your info straight into the "take" rather than waiting for the info to be sucked up an NSA / GCHQ fibre trap ;-)

No warning from phone?

I don't have an iPhone nor do the people I live with so I have a question. Doesn't the iPhone warn you when you are burning through your data quickly?

My phone has a built in app which keeps track of what you have used, how you are using it (which app is using exactly how much data) and when the data cap is refreshed. It even allows me to restrict data use either when I get near my limit or all the time. The info is pretty unmissable and details exactly how much I have left and for how long.

If the iPhone doesn't have this baked into iOS, are there not free apps that would do this for you or even premium apps that would do even more?

Switch to dual booting - SME advice requested

Hi everyone,

I have recently set up my laptop as a dual boot machine running Win 10 and Mint 17.2. Everything is working fine but I am seeking a bit of SME advice from you all to help ease my transition into regular Linux user. I hope you don't mind me posting here, some of the Linux forums seem awash with people waiting to jump on the noob and overload him with sudo this and tar that and don’t you know this, etc.

Mu primary reason for installing Mint is because of the privacy concerns around Windows. It's not that I have a big secret to hide, just that I don't think that my correspondence, web browsing, shopping and everything else should be made available to any company or a group of companies. I have no plans to abandon Windows completely but would like the choice of using Mint when I require a bit more privacy.

So I am here with a few questions that I am hoping that you all, as subject matter experts, can help with or at least point in the right direction.

1. Windows and Mint are both installed on the same physical disk. Does the Micros ft EULA allow them to look at non-Microsoft parts of the disk? i.e. Can they use the EULA to read letters thatI have written in Open Office on Mint?

2. As a total Linux noob, do any of you have suggestions for Linux software equivalents? Open Office is not bad at all but are there equivalents for software like Auto Cad, Media Players, Torrent Client, e Book readers? I am aware that Google employs similar data-collection methods as Microsoft – should I reject Chromium and run with the supposedly less secure Firefox or am I a small enough needle to be forever disregarded?

4. Ad blockers. Do I need one? Do I need any sort of malicious software removal tool? I don't believe that Linux (and Macs, and iPhones, and ietc.) are immune to the talents of a dedicated group.

5. One Drive. I have a lot on there. Is this accessible from Linux?

Like I said, I am a complete newbie. Any and all help appreciated. Thank you in advance even if the advice is RTFM. If the advice is RTFM can you please point out where the F the F-ing M is???

Thank You.

Re: I am not sure of the law in various parts of the world where microsoft operate

"Given that, in many cases, this is likely to fill the hard drive and stop the computer working it is no better than a virus and MS will have to pay for this bigtime."

Not really. Yes there will be a small amount of users who use a small drive or small partition for the OS who will have issues. I guess they will have to be extra vigilant or adjust sizes to suit. Unless someone is ghosting the OS drive every night and retaining copies (why???), I cant imagine this would be an issue. Mr Average will have a store bought Win7 or Win 8 pc and I doubt that there will be many who cannot spare 3GB of storage space. I doubt they would even notice the increase in footprint.

The significant issue here is that this download (which is effectively forced on you) may cause you to exceed an ISP download cap which in some cases may cause a financial or speed penalty to your connection.

Sure, you can set your connection to metered and Windows 10 is pretty effective at detecting metered connections but those not using wireless who have a metered connection will have a problem here.

Apple TV -

Hi everyone,

Does anyone here own an Apple TV? My friend is considering buying one but I have a couple of concerns though that I haven’t been able to fully answer through research on the net. Hopefully someone here can give me a few pointers. She will be using this in place of, not alongside, a terrestrial TV service (viewing probably 6+ hours Monday-Friday and 12+ Saturday / Sunday. I’m not really looking for advice on whether Apple TV is better or worse than Roku (or similar devices), I’m looking for advice on the legal & technical side.

She believes that by using the ATV, she will no longer need a TV licence. Is that correct? She is planning on blanking off the TV aerial connector on the wall as a way of proving that she will not be watching live broadcasts but surely she still could through services like iPlayer?

She would be using her iPhone as a hotspot to provide the connectivity for the ATV. Is this realistic? Are there truly uncapped or very large data plans for mobiles which are not unrealistically expensive?

Thanks,

Windows 8.1 Update: Throws desktop drones a bone but still as TOUCHY as ever

Re: Windows 8 was built for one reason only

Exactly, horses for courses.

Use Metro or TIFKAM on touchscreen devices, especially handhelds. Makes alot of sense.

Use the desktop for desktop oriented software (like games) but also in my case Office 2013 and VS2013.

The only problem is that I have to use middleware to achieve this. Start8 boots me to desktop which is where I want to be on my Win 8 desktop. If the next major update of windows (8.2) allows me to remove Start8, all the better.

Re: Can I quietly end it all?

Hi Refugee from Windows,

I am going to take a pount here that you haven't actually bought or used a brand new Win 8 machine then? I say this because I have two machines running 8.1 plus a few others running falvous as various as Raspian to Win 7). On buying the laptop with Win 8 preinstalled (Sony Vaio), I was up and running within 20 minutes (note that there wasn't any hours spent where the machine chewed through multiple reboots). The download and installation of Office 2013 took about another 20 minutes and the install of VS2013 via DVD took about another 40 minutes. Total: 1 Hr 20 Mins. The upgrade to Win 8.1 was via the store with no problems whatsoever. I think there were two reboots in total during that phase (getting the updates required before the upgrade to 8.1 required a reboot) then one reboot on install.

Also bought a Win 8.1 pro disk for the desktop running 7. Popped it in the machnine and was complete within 30 minutes. Single reboot.

On both machines the installation of stardock start8 took about 2 minutes. I boot to a nice desktop environment with a start menu in about 10 seconds (on a bad day).

I probably should mention that while the desktop is pretty high specced the Sony Vaio isn't. I can run XP in a VM if I wished but thats what compatability mode is for.

So, I call BS mate. You just haven't tried it have you?

Steven Roper: "That you can only install software from Microsoft's app store"

"to be constantly pushed towards unwanted cloud storage, and to constantly monitored, logged and spied on is unacceptable regardless of what the interface looks like."

What a load of rubbish. I am running AutoCAD, Steam, Office Pro, Project and Visio. None of these were purchased from the app store. In so far as being spied on, you can turn that off at installation or via the control panel. If you want to worry about being spied on then worry about Homeland Security and GCHQ.

Stop spreading FUD. Have you even tried Win 8? Is your objection to the login because you were using an illegal copy of the disk and licence key?

tabman

Re: I believe it

You don't have to wait for Windows 8.2. There are a myriad of applications (some free and some cost money - about $5 or £3) that will bring you to the desktop from boot. You never have to use TIFKAM. It is all there on the start menu.

tabman

Re: Any movement so far in migration has been to Windows 7 rather than 8 or 8.1

Why would you do that? I run Win 8.1 with Start8 on my desktop and my laptop. The desktop start-up time using fast boot is approx. 5 seconds from POST. The laptop is slightly slower.

I bought Win 8.1 for the desktop (the laptop, being a touchscreen Sony Vaio, came with it) specifically for the quicker start-up, better disk management tools (partitioning has been improved since Windows 7 and also the ability to clear and reallocate space) and because I actually prefer the straight edged windows rather than the curvy XP, Vista and Win 7 type.

Bring on the down votes for someone who speaks up for Win 8. It may not be fashionable to like it but I'm not a sheep and I make up my own mind. Many people here have obviously not tried it given some of the comments.

Re: Start Icon != Start Menu. This the problem.

But, run any of the replacement programs (StartUI, etc) and windows key = start menu.

Guess what Win Key + D does.....The Desktop. The Win 7 desktop. With the added security and other "under the bonnet" tweaks that actually makes Win 8 an excellent OS for tablet, laptop and desktop.

Now if you are smart enough to use "sudo apt get" then you should just be able to carry out the StartUI (or any of the others) trick.

What are you afraid of? That you would have to admit that with WIN 8 everything does just work, if you want the Win 7 experience then go get it.

Your answer kind of underscores what you mention when you say "Ever notice how easy it is to tell someone has never used the OS they are trying to defend"

I am missing an FM reciever (but I don't have much hope for getting one these days anyway), I hate that my DRM music is checked every so often, I hate that some music gets streamed even though I have (apparently) downloaded. I can't find a DLNA app which works well, I dont have iPlayer, 4OD, STV Player, 5 On Demand. No flash was a pain but as sites become HTML 5 compliant this is getting less annoying. Battery life is shocking (17hrs in standby) in comparison to my friends iPhone and Nexus 4. Podcast support within the OS is not available so I'm stuck with a 3rd Party App which is buggy and doesn't keep my casts updated.

Note: I haven't switched to droid yet, but plan to as soon as my current contract closes (or I may just buy my way out of it).

Now have a nexus 7 on droid, with a highly customisable UI and a good set of apps (once rooted). I can categorically state that my next phone will also be a droid for the same reasons that I love my nexus7. As for apple, the UI is dated, app store full of fart apps and the form factor really doesn't do it for me.
