I like WPF... It's not x-platform but it makes great vivid animated Windows app with little work... I did multiple production WPF apps and never had issues with perf or ease of coding... PInvoke works great when you need a quick Win32 API, but you can also use unsafe code... Managed C++ is very powerful...
I found that Win7 stayed out of the way... I hated that they removed Virtual Server support which made it harder to create domain based applications but at least it's not the Sybil they created next... I tried UWP and it sucked bad... Even the apps were lacking.. I tried the "Modern" version of WinZip and it was barely WinZip...
Wow, so it's still happening... It's not enough to work at MS and ge all the perks PLUS a six figure salary... When I was there in the 2000s, one of the admins on a team I was on stole millions in Server and SQL... It was a real common thing.. A friend gt busted after removing all the "good" HW from his lab machine and replacing it with his own "not-so-good" HW...
Even worse. he was only there a week or so and they caught him redhanded stealing a POWER STRIP...
And people used to tell me I was being unreasonable when complaining about the quality... I used to be an STE and a junior SDET in Windows... They started the process of eliminating QA in 2002, after XP SP2....
I don't agrtee with the author that testers don't run automation.. I ran TONS of automation suites provided by SDETs... I even wrote some and told management you can't fully test your own code as an SDET much less as a Windows dev...
I put off an upgrade because Win10 was killing the laptop I had it on... Every other update was a breaking change.. Sometimes my USB would go out, others the NIC would stop working, some caused endless reboots...
Yes, Windows 10 is Broken, borked, FUBAR, and many other negative things I can imagine...
The worst thing is they still need Windows to develop Azure... Putting a phone UI on my 3 LCD workstation is an insult... I MAY eventually upgrade to an expensive Svr Standard so I can put off updates...
I finally found this version but it's a preinstall from OEMs... I don't care much about Start Menus since I put everything on the task bar or use Start Run...
I just can't stand how the UI took a huge step backwards... AERO looks modern and Modern looks Crappy... It's fine for low use but my Win7 (typing on it) has windows everywhere and Aero makes finding edges easier... With Win10 you have to hit the right point on the window to grab it but it's a flat single color so I miss A LOT... Especially with Office apps...
Obviously they still aren't testing this crap internally and still having amateurs deciding on features... I had a PM that din't know how to turn the PC on... And that wasn''t the only one...
Still don't want Win10... Put off my Threadripper because of it... Well, I'm also waiting to see Vega come back... The only thing I could get out of Win10 with my usage patterns is DX12... That sucks...
The day they said that developers got shoved into the back seat... Win7 took away Virtual Server, Windows 8 created a huge mess of my workstation and now I have a phone OS that thinks I'll be talking to it.. It has made it difficult for me to work the way I do... I MAY reboot my machine once every few months, not when MS wants to give me phantom updates...
And now I have to probably get a server version or MAYBE the so-called workstation version of 10 I still haven't seen... I put off my Theadripper upgrade because I dread the experience I've had on my laptop...
No one will EVER find a way to bypass physical access, but server rooms are some of the most secure places in any company... Most people don't even know where they are...
And a remote BIOS injection would require a hook into the OS or the ability to control a reboot... servers are not a source of malware...
Now if Only I could easily buy one... MS really screwed the pooch on this... They made a decision to base the OS UI/UX on a platform with little share and few choices...
And they doubled down with Modern UI continuing though EVERYONE hated it and EVERY Adreno could do limited AERO, not to mention the latest Intel/AMD/nVidia GPUs for tablets and 2 in 1s...
I just got the Crapators Update on my laptop and the UI STILL looks like Win3.1... I RDP into and the side by side with my Win7 desktop is JUST UGLY...
Opteron is still in the number three super computer... Zen Opteron will have Secure Memory encryption and it looks like their SMT will work in servers from the beginning, unlike Intel which couldn't use HT for VMs...
Their K12 will go in the same socket as Zen which will let them have a Big.Little server config... Naples is 32 cores and there will be 16 core versions... Doom and Gloom hasn't helped the PC industry yet...
it is shit based on me having it on a laptop... I had Win 8 on my desktop and it was a NIGHTMARE... Win 10 on my laptop is even worse... I have lost work because not every app has AutoSave and Restore... Especially SQL where I do a LOT of work...
They have hosed my machine several tmes with these untested Beta updates they force on you... Dear Satya,WHY THE FUCK DID YOU FIRE ALL THE TESTERS.. ? I had already QUIT your fiefdom crap with non-technical people designing features...
If a person needs help turning their machine on they should not be able to dictate to KERNEL developers...
Maybe they should make Windows 10 not blow beta chunks all over everything.. They broke my laptop several times with updates... And the HORRID high contrast UI makes my head hurt.. I'm a developer so I'm using a PC for most of my waking hours and my productivity sucked on Win 8.1...
I RDP into my Win 10 laptop and Win7 looks like the newer UI... Windows 10 looks like the let their grade school kids design it... After pumping them for of Adderrall...

Funny... I left right after XP SP2 and so did a lot of other quality people.. It was sickening having people over you who could barely turn their PC on... Program Managers ruined so many features with fantasy requests, it's no wonder Win 10 is a huge fuster cluck...
And not only did they release the STEs, they made SDETs write AND run the automation which I found is IMPOSSIBLE...
They fired all the testers 10 years ago... I used to be one... Now CONSUMERS are beta testers... They do have automated testing but you can't catch everything with automation...
I won't be using it unless they fix that acid trip UI... I tried a Start Menu replacement but the Windows till looked like popups and the "high" contrast colors give me headaches... No way I can look at that 11 hours a day...
I have Win10 on a laptop I got last year and it has been a horrible nightmare... The only thing I have use for is the better audio and video...
Everything else sucks... The UI is an acid trip designed by a drunk Photoshopper... I just got the Anniv update and it's even worse... All the Windows look like popups.... Having no edges makes it hard to over lap windows... Ths icons are 3rd grade pencil drawings... Especially in the SysTray...
Modern apps totally blow chunks.. I tried WinZip and IHeartRadio... Ewwww... First they get rid of Silverlight rather than trying to remove the NPAPI parts and KEPT FLASH... They they take WPF and screw it up with UWP while there is no difference between a laptop and desktop and buying Nokia destroyed the phone OS...
So I'm stuck with a Phone UI on 23" LCDs...
Windows 10 SUCKS...
I came later though initially used the mainframe terminal to type in BASIC... Used more managed code than un-managed... But that doesn't mean cut and paste can't make your C# life a damn nightmare, not to mention SQL, JS and HTML...
I once saw some code where they were calling a DB to get user info in a Windows domain... The same place had SQL drawing HTML...
The worst cut and paste was a major city's reporting web site... The dev copied and pasted a whole javascript module to extend Web Form.. Which anyone knows BREAKS THE DESIGNER...
But I can say I don't check certain things like adding two known numbers...
The DB was even worse... Some of the logic in a workflow made me nauseous...
Maybe they shouldn't have chopped their own legs out from under them and everyone else when they released a $183 E6300 that was faster than the $500 PressHott... Now we are all five years in he hole because ALL OF A SUDDEN our old PCs were NOT WORTH ANYTHING, so many had to put off the new system...
At the same time, ARM was drinking their milkshake and giving people something other than WinTel to surf the web...
Hopefully, Zen will fix it by more clearly differentiating products... Who can really tell the difference between Core i3, i5, and i7...?
IOW, like Jim it's sucks donkey dikk... I RDPd into a laptop running on one of three LCDs and the difference was so striking with Aero, I couldn't take it... I can't imagine that ancient thing on my 24" LCD...
The settings panel is even worse than the phone UI...
I think I'll pass... I mean what are the chances that AutoDesk will make a Modern AutoCAD...?
They need to take Windows Core and split off the UIs... I don't want a phone UI on my desktop and it's foolish to have a desktop UI on your phone...
I can add a bunch of stuff.. I have a domain at home which means I don't want to use a Live account... I don't want the AERO transparency, I want the drop shadows and chrome edges... Looking at a window with no chrome is scary almost...
And the mixing of Phone UI setting with the Control Panel is criminal.. The Explorer window looks like a kid on drugs did it...
Why MS did you destroy my developer desktop while screaming developers, developers, developers...
I doubt Visual Studio could EVER be a Modern app just like PhotoShop, AutoCAD and too many other professional DESKTOP apps...
And people tell em everyone likes Win10... HA... The cartoon drawings, the misplaced settings, the blend of Modern an Control Panel, no chrome around any windows, not even a drop shadow to spot overlapped windowed apps...
Win10 says screw AutoCAD, AnSYS, ProE and any other DESKTOP tools... Developers, developers, developers, MY ASS...
Did anyone even look to see what the UI looks like on a 23" 1080p LCD...? It's horrible... Everything from This PC to the uneven icons vs text in Explorer sucks...
This is the first Windows that is better with no windows open... yesterday I tried to get 10240 installed on a laptop but the damn Start Menu wouldn't come up to click Settings which looks like a 2008 phone UI...
Microsoft what the hell were you thinking...?
