Microsoft Surface Pro X: Windows on Arm usable at long last – but, boy, are you gonna pay for it

disco_stu

£200or so for an extra 128GB of SSD storage does feel as if they are going in dry..

Windows on Arm keeps low profile at IFA as Intel takes swipe at platform's compatibility problems

Re: An answer in search of a question

What Windows on ARM really needs is x64 application compatibility, I imagine the performance overhead of emulating x64 on ARM means this is going to be a non starter for a while.

Could you helpfully point out the parts which are biased? It seems to be factual reporting, there is the odd snarky comment but then it is The Register.

Re: Safari?

I use Chrome on desktop pc and on iOS, though I am currently trying to wean myself off Chrome/Google usage., It's a shame Apple stopped releasing Safari for Windows as I would probably not be using Chrome if they did.

It's the chemtrails making us forget that animals do not use screens. :D

Apple bestows first hardware upgrades in years upon neglected iPad Mini and Air lines

disco_stu

My iPad Mini2 is still going after 5 years of use, only chrome/safari usage seems to be showing its age. It might be time to upgrade, though I would probably go for a standard iPad rather than the Mini this time around.

Silent Merc, holy e-car... Mflllwhmmmp! What is that terrible sound?

disco_stu

I would be so happy to drive in a car that made the Jetsons sound - at least it would seem for a few moments I'm not living in a dysotopian future :D

Is it really that much of a surprise that the Surface Go is slow - its a dual core Pentium with the same performance as a desktop from 10 years ago.

Re: Steep drop in prices for SSD

I setup a new install of Windows 10 on a Samsung 970 SSD last month, the install was completed in less than 5 minutes, there's no way I could go back to Slow Spinning Rust given the disparity in speed.

Based on past Government IT projects it will be a shitshow if we do leave with no deal!

A lot of the overbright bike lights are designed for off road use and really aren't suitable for use with traffic as they chuck out light in all directions and not focusing the light where it needs to be..

I cycle into work pretty much all year round, it's along a canal towpath.

In the winter when commuting in the dark it has the added danger of being dazzled by oncoming bike lights, the combination of an unlit towpath with a superbright ( sometimes strobing ) lights is very disorientating.

Two's company, Three's unbowed: You Brits will pay more for MMS snaps

disco_stu

I tethered my ipad to my phone whilst I was on holiday in Italy, I got a text message within a few minutes telling me to stop tethering. This was on Three, I think you can't tether from phone to another device outside the UK.

disco_stu

I don't think I can remember the last time I sent an MMS, it has to be in the proto smartphone era when I had an N95 so about 10 years ago.

So the suits swanned off to GDPR events leaving you at the coalface? It's really more IT's problem

Re: ITs job but not IT's problem

It was a joy for me to attend a presentation on GDPR by someone at Irwin Mitchell and hear that the IT Manager (me) can't be in overall charge of GDPR :D

Streetmap loses appeal against Google Maps dominance judgement

disco_stu

I just had a look at the Streetmaps page, looks like it hasn't evolved for about 10 years.

When you do zoom into the maps they are better than the Google maps, for example better use of colours for different road types but lack of scroll wheel zoom, the small mapping window are something that should have been ditched as soon as Google Maps came out.

I'm more interested in a Nook Tablet than a Kindle Fire but I guess not much chance of seeing that on these shores.
