Thus the real implications of this find; the site of the world's oldest couch!

Exactly! And even when it's the big boys throwing hissy fits at each other, who wins?
Look at the Oracle/Google fracas, Google lost money defending themselves, Oracle lost and got nothing but lawyer bills, so who got the "R&D" money? Dewey, Suem, and Howe!
(But don't worry, I'm sure it'll go into proper research, such as investigating how fast the ice melts in a margarita exposed to the Carribean summer sun.)
"But it's happened to Microsoft quite often. Why show off incomplete products to the press? leave that to the developer shows where the level of understanding is higher."
But isn't that par for the course for Microsoft? When Apple unveils a new device, you can buy one immediately. When Microsoft demos a new device, it's always months/years before they have a finished product, and it's always short on what was demo'd.
I'm no fan of either company, but at least with Apple, what you see is what you get.
You might be near an idea there!
How about instead of paper, just paper pulp, and pump it into used oil wells?
Then you could come back in a decade, tap the well for natural gas, lather, rinse, repeat.
Using the "recycled carbon" instead of fossil fuels would cut down on new (more) CO2 entering the atmosphere, and since no process is 100%, would even lead to a net loss of atmospheric CO2 over time.
Ah, there's the rub, innit? Since it'd take decades (at least) to reduce CO2 levels, there'd be no immediate profit/glory for anyone doing it.... so fuggedaboutit!
I'll bet this is an even bigger success than the Kin!
Seriously, sometime in the middle of next year, I'll probably pick one up at some brick'n'mortar's bargain bin, once the hack is available to load Android or some other distro on it, so I can put it to use after I'm tired of playing with RT.
Same here. I only subscribe to my local cable company's internet service (since it was the cheapest), and get no actual "cable" on my cable.
Oddly enough, one a week, I get a circular in the mail from them, extolling their internet service, and trying to get me to sign up.
(That's right, they want me to add the only service I'm using to the list of cable services I'm using.)
'year of linux on the desktop'
That's come and gone already. Those of us that want it, have it. MS's problem is that consumers have many choices beyond desktops now, and Apple, or some form of Linux, runs on most of the alternatives.
So in typical panic mode MS is trying to expand out... by pushing a non-desktop interface on desktops? Oo-kaay...
"Chief executive Steve Ballmer is reported to have said 500 million "users" would "have" Windows 8 next year - he was speaking at the Seoul Digital Forum, in South Korea."
Are you sure he didn't say something like:
" 500 million have to use Windows 8 next year... or I lose the rest of my bonus!"?
And nobody really pays any attention to the attention whores.
(outside of arresting a couple for blocking foot traffic with a Fischer Price Teletubby playhouse.)
Seriously, going after Apple for using nasty-nasty coal genenerated power? I suppose all the protesters have monitors on all their outlets to block it from their homes, since after all, some of the electricity coming off the grid and into their homes is coal generated.
"Many "documentaries" that last for an hour, could be shown in 30 minutes if they cut out all the padding."
You've found some very informative documentaries! My last foray into watching TV ended when I realised that after watching the intro to a documentary, you could skip past all the "These are probable theories" BS, and find all the actual info in the last two minutes before the closing credits!
Uh, yeah, good luck with the e-book version of "Rebuilding Civilization" after the apocalypse.
A bit OTT, but having been through a couple of lengthy power outages due to Mother Nature throwing her weight around, a dead tree version gives you something to do while waiting for the power to come back on.
