Yahoo! May! Buy! Tumblr! For! One! BEELLION! Bucks!

Captain DaFt

Damn you autocomplete!

That was supposed to be "throes" not "throws"!

Captain DaFt

It's sad, really.

Can't Yahoo! just figure out how to fix what they have first?

(It should be easy, just quit doing what they did to break it in the first place.)

Instead, they're going terminal, and smashing everything around them in their death throws.

How smart does your desk phone need to be?

Captain DaFt

Sitting at the desk in the office, IM, e-mail, voip, and visual chat on the computer, a cellphone for when you're away from the desk. Office phones have become a bit redundant these days.

*But*, a big, important looking phone covered with bells and whistles is still a status symbol among office types, even if it's rarely used.

Or, they could just compare his digital copies to the originals he copied, the "white noise" would stand out like a sore thumb, and while decrypting it (or even proving it *was* encrypted data would be problematic, just it's existence would flag an "AHA! We were right all along!" reaction.

Re: David, you missed the point

Doesn't matter about the milling machine, anyone determined enough could just use a drill, files, a dremel, or even an exacto knife set and carve their own from ABS stock. Voila! Xray proof pistol. (I wouldn't fire it, though.)

It's not like a gun is some super-sophisticated piece of arcane machinery, people have been cobbling together homemade firearms since gunpowder was introduced to the western world from Asia. (just google "zip gun", "pipe gun" or "prison gun" to see a world of home made ordinance.)

Amazon by Yahoo! or Ask Jeeves

Or, Hell, LinusTorvalds to IBM or SGI!

"The customers for a $100 no-brand Android device aren't in the market for an iPad, or a Win8 tablet, or an Asus Transformer."

Right, they're in the market for a cheap portable that little Timmy and Suzy can use for school and play.

And that's what should be worrying the Hell out of MS and Apple, an entire generation growing up on Android. Last week I installed F-droid on my "no name" netbook.

Who told me about it? A twelve year old running it on his! He also had hacked it to run Google Play, gave me the warm fuzzies for the future.

Unfortunately, if global warming is correct, England can expect more of the same, and worse!

Deep ocean currents have continued climbing while the air temperatures have stalled. This has lead to a slowdown in ocean currents, like the Gulf stream, which keeps England warm.*

Worse, with the moderating effects diminished, the weather becomes more severe as more heat is left to be carried to the poles from the tropics via atmosphere.

Net effect: England gets colder, with more storms as global temperatures rise.

*England is at the same latitude as Siberia, without the Gulf stream, it'd have the same temperatures.

Captain DaFt

I'm not as old as you, but in my lifetime, I've seen Summer temperatures change from highs in the hundreds (f) being rare heat waves to normal highs for weeks; alligators, which only lived in states south of here, have established populations here now to the point that they're common roadkill in the coastal area. And yes, the palm trees that once only existed far south of here, now flourish, while some once common trees have virtually vanished.

Global warming may not be a thing, but in regional warming in southern New England states is definitely real.

PC floggers scavenge for crumbs as Apple hoovers up profits

Captain DaFt

The formula is simple

All you have to do to sell a PC Is:

Make it well, nobody wants a noisy, flimsy piece of crap.

Make it attractive. Nobody wants it if it looks like crap, and that includes gaudy, blinged out cases as well as dull, "we're all clones" boxes.

Make it accessible. If I can't find it, I can't buy it, now, can I?

This goes for both online and traditional outlets. If I have to wander a maze of webpages on your site just find it, fuck it, I'll go elsewhere, but if your closest retail outlit is only in select major metropolis' it won't be there.

Make it affordable. No, I don't mean cheap, I mean make it at least appear to be value for the money spent. I'll pay a reasonable premium for a quality machine.

Now see? That's not so hard!

Steve Jobs figured it out... Hell! Even I can figure it out, why can't you? What? Bottom line? Haven't you noticed yet that if you're only aiming for the bottom, you'll get there?

OK, I'm done ranting now... for now.

Not a fan of either Apple or MS, but I agree with you that at least Apple knows the difference between computers and tablets.

But... I can see where it'd make sense for them (to them) to use ARM on their computers, runs cooler, longer battery life, cheaper, and more control over processor design than Intel's offerings.

Re: Licensing?

Wait... What? MS has a roadmap?

Then why have they been chasing everyone else's tail lights to figure out where to go for the past dozen years?

Captain DaFt

Licensing?

When IBM dropped support for OS/2, there were enough businesses still using it that EcomStation licenced the rights to continue support under their name, and today it's still ticking away, almost forgotten, but still providing valuable infrastructure.

Surely, MS wouldn't turn down a revenue stream from licensing it to a third party willing to support XP?
