Can Microsoft's U-turn stop the Xbox 360 becoming another XP?

Captain DaFt

Re: PS4 all the way for me. There are still too many problems with the Xbone

" There is nothing to stop them implemting this after launch and after they got my money. "

Unfortunately, the same applies to Sony, doesn't it? Sell you the unit, then change it to work the way they want it to afterwards.

That's why I'm waiting a couple of years to see who does what, before I buy, (The latest, hottest game ain't really a must-have for me.)

In the meantime, I'm settling for new desktop.

Wannabe Dell owner Icahn's buyout blueprint blasted by board bods

Captain DaFt

Nice vicious circle there

Ichan buys more shares to gain leverage, but his reputation cause the share value to drop, which means he needs to buy more shares, which will eventually leave him with controlling interest in a company that's worthless, because he now controls it.

What I'd like to see happen:

Then Mr. Dell buys him out for a pittance, taking the company private as he originally intended, and its value rebounds dramatically. Icahn sues, and is laughed out of court, saddled with even more expenses.

Microsoft caves on Xbox One DRM and used-game controls

Captain DaFt

Well, halfway there

Now if MS would just address the issue of the "always watching and listening" aspect of the beastly little box.

COLD BALLS OF FLAME light up International Space Station

Captain DaFt

Re: x(r) @ Grikath

"I really don't get how a reaction that not only extracts half of the potential energy of a reaction, but produces poisons to boot can lead to "more efficient combustion engines" through this mechanism."

The biggest waste product of modern internal combustion engines is heat. If we could figure out how to use "cold flame" in them, more energy would be used to move the vehicle, rather than uselessly heating up things.

The end goal *is* to efficiently and completely convert fuel to energy, but at the lower "cold flame" temperatures, producing less waste heat.

HP PCs 'n' printers boss steps down, replaced by Aussie

Captain DaFt

Re: Damn hype cycle

"The Lenovos and HPs of the world sell plenty of garbage hardware to Best Buy and the like"

And there's a large part of the problem there. Average Joe buys those, Finds that they're crap, and go buys a tablet, and wonders why the desktop/laptop makers are even still in business.

Now add Win 8 to the mix, and he's even less likely to buy a desktop/laptop since it looks like a tablet when it's running, but doesn't work like he's used to, since he's gotten used to Apple and Android.

SCO vs. IBM battle resumes over ownership of Unix

Captain DaFt

Re: Corporations are people, my friend!

"Haven't you been paying attention? The SCOTUS (Supreme Court) says corporations are people. Sociopathic people focused on nothing but making money."

Actually, although that's technically the case, if you look at that ruling, interpreted correctly. it would outlaw corporations! (Follow me here)

A. People create and own a corporation.

B. Corporations are legal entities that the SCOTUS gave human rights.

C. Slavery is illegal. (You may not own another person.)

D. Since forming a corporation creates an entity with human rights, stockholders are technically slave owners.

E. Therefore, forming a corporation is an act that facilitates slavery, and is illegal.

Disclaimer: No, I'm not serious, just pointing out how absurd that "Corporations are people" ruling actually is.

Remember that lawyer that claimed he could drive in the carpool lane because he had a briefcase full of corporate paperwork and thus was legally carpooling? Judge didn't see it that way. Ah, here's the story:

http://www.marinscope.com/news_pointer/news/article_a9168c46-5a93-11e2-abaf-0019bb2963f4.html

Captain DaFt

Like P. Lee said

Corporations are nothing but papers filed in a court somewhere, a legal fiction designed for profit.

Anyone that thinks there's something to be gained from one, no matter how defunct it is, merely has to contact the owners and strike a deal with them.

Now the *big* question, who, besides the lawyers hired, stands to profit from this, and how? (Money, IP, FUD, LULZ?)

Sony allows hacking of its unloved SmartWatch

Captain DaFt

Sorry Sony

But like a feral cat, every time I think you're friendly, you suddenly turn on me.

That's why I'm not getting a PS4, and couldn't care less about your watch.

The last time you "opened up" a device, you dumped it as soon as it had a following.

I remember Aibo, and you didn't earn any brownie points with me for being less evil than MS this time.

Nearly-transparent screen adds solar charge to phones

Captain DaFt

Hands up, who leaves their phone lying around in the open sun?

Except for the few brief minutes per use, mine's either in my pocket, or in the charging station. It doesn't see much daylight, not even close to enough to top off a charge.

Now a portable charging station, with a separate solar panel that could be placed in a window, that might be useful.

Microsoft to open Windows Stores inside 600 Best Buy locations

Captain DaFt

" their jobs will be to provide demos and help customers understand how to work with Microsoft products – er, that is, "to let them see how Microsoft technology can enhance their lives."

I can just picture how this gem of an idea was born:

Ballmer (Holding chair): "I'm sick to death of all the screeching about how Win 8 is unintuitive and hard to use, DO SOMETHING!!"

Underling(Choosing his words carefully): "Well... we could put people in the stores to show the customers how, er, easy, dynamic, and intuitive Win8 really is.. "

Ballmer: "You ninny, our customers already love the features we've put in Win 8!"

Underling: "I uh, meant the people that are supposed to er, actually buy and use the system, not the media corps."

Ballmer: "... The who? That's marketings job isn't it? Go down and see what they can do with your idea. Take the handbasket, it's faster."

Captain DaFt
Facepalm

It's a pity

I was actually leaning toward getting an Xbone up until they announced their plans for it.

As for PS4... well all they've got to show so far is a controller, a fuzzy rectangle, and some video mock-ups of games it might have.

Wii U? Nope, why would I want a game system tethered to a tablet with lousy battery life? Not to mention, the only reason I have a Wii ws that it played the games I wanted, and the Wii U doesn't. (I know, I know; "Coming soon", but they said that for months with the 3DS, and then.. "Japanese market only."

So what's left? Steam?

Conclusion: None of the new systems look appealing, my PC is getting long in the tooth, so the obvious choice is to find a decent desktop running Win 7. Any recommendations? (Eadon need not apply)

Re: Manufacturer & Mobile operator : @Ledswinger

Jobs' brilliance was due to his focus on esthetics and user interface, leaving the *how* to the grunts.

There are many stories of something being submitted to him, He'd play with it, then deamand, "Why doesn't it do this? Why can't I do that?"

When they'd tell him, "It doesn't work that way." or "that's not secure." , he'd throw it at them and demand that they bring it back when it "worked right".

Guess what? They brought it back meeting his demanding criteria, and still kept it mostly secure.

Jobs wasn't a computer genius, he was a people genius, in that he knew what the average joe on the street expected from a device.

Captain DaFt

Re: does tend to prove the point

"A Linux kernel probably isn't any safer if put in the hands of an idiot user than Windows"

People tend to forget, or don't know, that the NT kernel for windows actually has very robust security built in.

NT, Linux, BSD, whatever, the security of the kernel doesn't mean a hill of beans if what's layered on top of it ignores or circiumvents that security.

Captain DaFt

Re: Déjà vu

"Seriously, you think that a very small number of infections by a dangerous trojan and a few other virus is the same as Win98's thousands upon thousands of infections"

And you're forgetting that Win 98 only had a few, small infections at first as well.

It took several years for it to get to the point that there were thousands and thousands of infections. We're still in the early days of Android.

And as for Android's defenses? It alerts you to what permissions an app is asking for, and the only control you have at present is "yes or no" to all.

Android really needs a fine grained permissions control for apps, which it will at best only get a partial version, because Google needs its data.

Captain DaFt

Déjà vu

Remember Windows 98?

Popular, ran all the software, and about as secure as a two hundred thousand dollar mortage given to a crack addict.

I hate to say it, but Android's beginning to look the same.

Re: '....his blog Learning by shipping.'

Sinofsky and Win 8 shipping? I've been surfing tumblr too much. This is what came to me first when I read that:

1. shipping

A term used to describe fan fictions that take previously created characters and put them as a pair. It usually refers to romantic relationships, but it can refer platonic ones as well. (Just think of "shipping" as short for "relationSHIP".)

Sinofsky and Win 8 shipping?... EWWW! I'm off to bleach my brain now!

Motorola shows off tattoo and swallowable password hardware

Captain DaFt

Seems excessive

Why stick-on tattoos and pills? It seems an authenticator rfid card, or one built into a ring or bracelet would work just as well.

With the card, pull out and swipe, with the jewellery, a scanner built into the keyboard or touchscreen would read it automatically.

Of course, in any event, you'd still need a logon request prompt to pop up, otherwise what's to keep some dodgy site from requesting an auto logon just to harvest passwords?

(And even then there'd still be the problem of the "click it to make it go away" lack of mentality.)

Re: Captain DaFt: Easiest takedown ever!

I agree, it accomplished nothing, aside from getting a few more idiots on a list.
