Re: 13 months in Bracknell?

I actually found HP to be quite a nice company to work for. But that was a few years ago.

Re: But... it is the USA...

Name me a state that doesn't allow guns. There isn't one. The 2nd Amendment has that one pretty well covered (and no, NYC is not a state).

Secondly, you absolutely can use lethal force in defense of property, in many states. Castle Doctrine, Stand Your Ground, and Make My Day laws make this possible.

Ofcom: UK broadband speed on the up as punters' packages swell

br0die

Precisely. Which is why telecoms should be public, or at least heavily subsidised.

br0die

actual vs. advertised? Seems pretty straight forward to me.

br0die

Exactly! That is the problem in this country. BT is public? Fine, then we can petition the gov for better coverage and speed. Private from the start? Fine, there will be lots of companies who can compete for our business. But this situation where a private company was handed the public infrastructure (both BT and Telewest/VM) is a terrible situation, where only the corps win.

My area is notorious for bad internet, because unless you are on fibre, you have to use the exchange from the town to the west or the town to the north, we don't have our own. Our local Con MP was elected partly on the grounds that he promised better broadband. Now he was elected, he says "derp, actually the ISPs are all private companies, I can't tell them what to do..". So much for that. Capitalism = retarded.

This article, tl;dr

tl;dr: "People with decent speeds will be getting better speeds. People with 90s-era speeds still stuck with 90s speeds."

br0die
Mushroom

Oh fuck off

This is all well and good, giving people who already have fibre higher speed.

What about us that are stuck on the end of a 6-mile length of copper? Us that get 1mbps on a good day, but usually .3-.5?

All I ever see in the news is BT rolling out fibre to all and sundry (when really, they are "rolling out" to the exchanges, after which only 40% of those get it to their cab. Those people usually already had fibre from Virgin). Virgin increases their speeds, so it is possible to get over 100mbps if you wanna pay for it. Guess what? I would gladly pay for it. But there is no high-speed broadband anywhere on the horizon for people in my area, a communications not-spot in the middle of a city full of fibre.

Maybe focus on getting everyone up to something like 5mbps before you try and play catch-up with the rest of the West, climbing to three figures.

Study finds piracy withering against legal alternatives

br0die

"In the 60's, nobody cared if you tape recorded a new song on the radio. When VCR's came out, people regularly recorded their favorite movie. Again, nobody cared. The recording industry said that these copies were low quality and they didn't care. "

Not entirely true, see "Home Taping is Killing Music".

Thumb Up

Works for me

I think this method is appropriate. I would not want to buy a game (considering what they cost these days, and the amount of bad games that have come out) without trying it out first. Thankfully, the structure of modern (PC) games is perfect for this model. The pirated copy usually only allows you to play the single player part anyway, because getting on a server to play MP involves some kind of key checking or otherwise phoning home. In this way, if the game is good the person will likely buy it to be able to access multiplayer (which with today's games is 80% of the gameplay anyway), and if it is rubbish they will get rid of it and that will be that. The latest FPS games only have a campaign mode that lasts the weekend, then it is on to multiplayer for months, if not years. Seems like a fair deal to me.

@Ian

Do not dub either. Look how awful Trollhunter became after they dubbed that.

Also, do you refer to "Let the Right One In"? I did not realise they Hollywood'ed that one.

It is true though, all these foreign films I know and love (see: The Experiment, an awesome German movie mimicking the Stanford Prison experiment) are being remade in Hollywood. It is such a shame, because they often do not live up to the original, and all this because people are unwilling to read subs.

Re: The film

As a Norwegian, I implore you;

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, don't watch the dubbed version. At least not the first time (watch it later, and laugh). The dubbing is so ridiculous it ruins the film entirely. Not only are the voice actors ridiculous and the voices totally mismatched, but it misses out (sometimes key) information.

Some British friends watched this version with me, and I had to ask them to pause it every ten minutes to explain what was meant by the often directly-translated dialogue.

Yes, both my parents and my grand parents are tech literate. Just as they know how to use a mobile phone they know how to order plane tickets online. There is no excuse not to learn this stuff now, it is everyday life.

You go a long way to assuming I am reliant on Facebook and twitter, which are a whole other ballgame and not really relevant to this discussion (incidentally, I have a Facebook that I sometimes look at. twitter, well to this day I am not sure what it is for, and why people use it).

I also function completely fine without these things (I can set up camp/build a shelter, forage for food and find water in the forest), but there is no need to in every day life.

Why do you sleep on a bed? Is it necessary? Why not resort to the floor? It is, after all, a luxury and not necessary.

I say don't push it on them. They will either realise soon enough that they are being left behind, or they will just get left behind and nothing of value is lost. Society will shape itself to the adaptation to technology regardless of a few stubborn mules. Maybe sometime in the future, dole cheques will need to be claimed online and deposited directly to an online bank account. That will get them learning the internet.

I also like how he is branded a pedophile and put on the register for attempting to have sex with a "child". This "child" will be able to legally have sex in less than a year. Not defending him at all, but at the very least the wording should be a little different, both legally and journalistically. If 15-16 is the difference between child and adult, then who is an "adolescent" or "young adult"?

@MrCheese

This does not change the fact it's not my job to police your pets. The excuse that "they have their own lives" does not hold. If it did, I could keep a pet elephant, and if it crushed your car I would use the same excuse, since he likes to walk around on his own and I can't keep it trapped in the house, poor thing.

If *you* can't control your pet, *you* should not have one. You are not a special case because of your choice of pet.

br0die

Moreover, it explains the expression/phenomenon "crazy cat lady", and why there is no "crazy [x] lady" for all other values of x.

br0die

Agreed. It annoys me a little that cat owners are exempt from responsibility of their pets (this seems to be unique to this pet, as all other pets need to be accounted for by their owner). I used to have a lot of issues with cats fouling my garden. Other people (cat owners) response was usually along the lines of doing things to cat-proof my garden (put up a better fence, leave lion poo around, fill a bottle with water etc.) But why is it my prerogative to keep your pets out? Should it not be your responsibility to keep your pets away from my garden?

I have a German Shepherd now, so cats in the garden are not such a problem anymore, but I do worry what the legal implications are if he kills or maims a cat in our own garden (he likes to play, only, his idea of playing can be a bit rough).

Goldeneye 007: Reloaded

br0die
Meh

I was initially excited on seeing this. Goldeneye remains one of my fondest memories of childhood and was one of the first FPS's I ever played. I still play it now, on an emulator.

It is a shame, then, that it will not come out on the PC (I always wanted this, so that I could react to threats at my real speed, as opposed to how the quick the joystick will let me). More disappointing is that the music has not been kept in and that the gadgets are gone. Cannot really comment on the voice actors, since the original didn't have speech (one of the few things people really disliked about it). I think they could have done this really well, if they had approached it a little differently. Honestly I do not mind that the story and levels are the same. I would have liked to simply play through the original game, but with modern graphics, sound, and on a PC. Sadly this will not happen, it would seem.

Also, for that price, no way.

Best Buy to shutter all UK megastores

br0die

It is a nice store, and the staff are helpful (certainly more so than the PC World further over in Cribbs) but neither of those things really matter to me much. I was excited at the aspect of Best Buy in the UK since, having lived in the US, I thought it would provide an alternative to PC World (store) and Ebuyer (online ordering), in other words, the low cost of ebuyer without having to use mailorder. But I was wrong. Everything in Best Buy costs the same as everywhere else, and the selection is the same as in PC World. So, Best Buy does not really provide anything different (except maybe a more helpful staff to customers who aren't technical). I can see why this venture went sour.
