I still remember when I was a software developer, one of the first tests we ran on any software was the piano test - pretend you are playing a very lively melody on the keyboard and hit as many random keys as you can... if the software managed to survive without deleting the whole database or crashing the OS (Win95 at the time), it was deemed worthy for further testing...

Amazon's ad-hoc Ring, Echo mesh network can mooch off your neighbors' Wi-Fi if needed – and it's opt-out

Free lunch?

I have been mildly entertained by people complaining about providers using their "this, that or the other" in order to make profit, but the same people not complaining about the free or heavily discounted services they receive... For all of them, I have this to say: There is no such thing as free lunch! If you don't want to get burnt, don't play with fire!

So Amazon uses some of your bandwidth to form a private mesh network... SO WHAT? If you don't like it, don't buy an Amazon device!

And if you think that in this current day and age you are NOT monitored constantly, then think again... Whoever wants to monitor you or spy on you will not need an Amazon device or a mesh network, there are way more easier ways to do this...

So get real, stop wining and live your lives.

It could be 'five to ten years' before the world finally drags itself away from IPv4

Then DON'T!!! This site is full of comments from people who have no idea what they are talking about... and their comments are generally sh*t.

Re: Virgin works like a charm

I agree with almost everything you said, apart from the second part of point 1. If you use the SH3 in modem mode, the only thing you loose is the sh*tty wi-fi feature, the speed works as it should. It did have a problem in the beginning with high latency levels, which messed up the experience for the gamers, but speed-wise it is top-notch. This issue is fixed now so overall a top service. I pay for the 200Mb/s and get 220Mb/s almost constantly (I use Samknows monitoring box so I do know that the speed is constant).

I think that the more customers an ISP has the higher number of complaints they will have. The survey does not say anything about if this persentages are out of their total sample or out of the sample of a given provider. But again, it is an Andrew Orlowski article, so what else could you expect?

Re: You do not need to NAT!

...While Linux does support IPv6 addressing fully, MS only permits a single IPv6 address to be statically assigned....

Which version of MS are you using? 3.11? Because the ones I'm using allow me to assign as many IPv6 addresses as I want statically.

As for legacy devices not supporting IPv6, all you need to do is add a NAT64 device somewhere on your network and voila, problem solved. Or even better - use one other device commonly known as the "Rubbish bin".

VMware flings vCenter Server away from Windows, if you want

Re: Not distributed as a VM

You don't need a windows machine to deploy the vCSA, it is quite happy with a scripted deploy under linux.

As for the chicken/egg problem, it seems that none of you have heard of HA or FT, no problem running a redundant appliance on a second host. And with the latest version you also have linked mode, so running multiple appliances in parallel is an option if you so desire.

Crims set up fake companies to hoard and sell IPv4 addresses

kpanchev

Have you thought that it might be because if you need an IP address for your own private use, they need to give you a network? The smallest network has 4 IP addresses from which you can use 2. If they just give you one IP address, it will be on a network with other IPs and thus accessible from other users. Surely you don't want this, do you? (Unless you are running a public server, then you can do with 1 IP accessible from everyone)

Re: Bria

Why would anyone pay for an app to do SIP calls, when there are shitload of them around for free? And don't forget, for SIP calling you need to set up additional account and pay for it, it does not come from your mobile service, it has a different number and although very good it is not ready for the general Joe, especially if the forementioned Joe is an American (no offence, but this is my experience with people from over the pond)

BT: Let us scrap ordinary phone lines. You've all got great internet, right?

kpanchev

Re: It says "provision on request"...

"...You aren't actually forced to - BT (Openreach) are quite happy to provide just the wire bit to any ISP that wants it...."

The problem is that I am not an ISP, I am just an end user who does not want or need a landline, but I don't have the option to "not request" it...

kpanchev

It says "provision on request"...

Well, as I read the Ofcom document, it states that BT should provide tepephone service "on request". So if I don't request the phone but only the internet provision, why am I forced to buy it? Because of this I will never subscribe to any dsl service that forces me to pay for something I do not require...

On another note, I am no lawyer, but I do see a case here for people taking BT to court for making them buy a product they don't want... the same banks are paying back for unwanted PPI...

Re: Just use WhatsApp and Skype

....and you are missing the point completely... I would like to see you using WhatsUp and Skype when you go abroad and you have no internet access or it costs you an arm and a leg... and then get calls to your skype from a normal mobile or landline (which costs a lot more than a standard mobile) to add to the cost of data traffic needed for the incoming call...

Why IP telephony is about more than just saving money

kpanchev

As usual, businesses need to discover the wheel and the hot water... again.

I have ditched my landline back in 2005 and that was the best decision I have ever made. I am fortunate though that I get my internet access through cable and not DSL, but for the businesses that is not an issue.

There is another problem for them though, and that is the general availability of tech trained people. At the moment a specialist that knows their stuff is very difficult to come to, even if they have done all the training and have all the fancy certificates to show (believe me, I work in the education system and know how these certificates are obtained). On the other front as a contractor I have seen far too many "specialists" that have absolutely no idea what they are doing...

So my two pence: get the right staff (train the right staff) and start saving shedloads of money.

Re: Idiot misses the point... on purpose?

@ Hans 1, I have had an android phone for the last 5 or 6 years, and I have upgraded pretty regularly, in fact, on my GS2 I used to do upgrades to the latest version of the OS every day.... CyanogenMod for you.

"Android phones are crap because they sync everything to the cloud ..." Only if you like to do this, you can run it completely offline, or you can run it with Google cloud, or any other third party cloud, or if you want, your own private cloud.

Your BB10 phone is pretty secure, nobody has yet managed to root it.... Maybe because it is not worth it rooting the total of ten BB10 phones out there...
