Oh no, EE! More UK mobile customers face sluggish roaming abroad

jonnycando

Just like USA

Here we usually enjoy free roaming, but often at 1xRTT or HSDPA speeds, and very limited MB. Sprint for it's part have LTE roaming agreements here and there...but you really have to have zero home signal before you can gain access to any of it. It is a fact though, that free roaming is not free, and the cost is built into your monthly rates. If we want all we can eat on any network, it seems...we will pay for it despite any assurances of "free roaming." It should have been recognized by the EU that there still ain't no free lunch, and you cannot legislate it. Somebody is going to pay regardless.

Google paying Apple BEEELLIONS to stay search top dog on iDevices, say analysts

jonnycando

No need for them to pay....

I find all other attempts at a search engine wanting for various reasons...so Google it is. I'd use it even if they weren't paying to be default. And well, even they have come up lacking once in a while, but less often than oh....say....Bing. Which is from microsoft, which makes it dead on arrival.

How Apple exploded Europe's crony capitalism

jonnycando

There are always gonna be people in it for themselves....but on the average capitalism is the best way to go....at least that way everyone can be in it for themselves, or not. Choice is good. Steve Jobs did upset the apple cart and focus on the delight of the end user. But he is gone, and likely his vision with him. But as many people as there are in this world, there will be another one along any second...but he might not work for Apple!

Verizon is gonna axe its 'unlimited' data hogs

jonnycando

Hmmm, shades of well....typical behavior

Verizon does it's damnedest to get rid of EVERY customer at some time or another. After sulking away, and finding you a better deal, maybe even one where unlimited really is not limited in any fashion they beg you to come back....What? Come back and be abused some more? I want Verizon bankrupted and I don't care how it happens. I want it now!

Microsoft's cmd.exe deposed by PowerShell in Windows 10 preview

jonnycando
Meh

Ambivalent?

Well, I have been computing since the command line was all there was. Not a power user just an early user. I have long since abandoned Windows but had I dog in this fight, I'd probably not squawk too much if powershell becomes the default command line utility. So long as it has the usual and expected capabilities of command.com, errr....cmd.exe....and works as expected there....any new functionality should be welcome I reckon. I should be a bit surprised that Microsoft lets users have any form of command line in this day and age. Oh well, I'll stay with Linux I guess. But if there's a reason to use any OS, being able to get under the hood is a prerequisite for me.

Brave telco giants kill threat of decent internet service in rural North Carolina

jonnycando

I think...

the problem here is how current law is written. Where commercial interests ought to have preference in supplying a service, let's say; It should also be understood that unless and until that commercial provider comes in and expresses the willingness and is awarded the necessary public convenience franchise, that either the local government being of the people and by the people and for the people, might provide that service...or a local public service cooperative may obtain the franchise.

Of course current law is not nearly so useful, but laws can be changed....if folks will get their dander up and come running into the streets demanding their rights.

'Google tax' already being avoided, says Australian Tax Office

jonnycando

Well, we are talking about taxes,

and where taxes are concerned if there's a way to dodge them, they will be dodged. However, as to the availability of loopholes, it is the government entity that writes the tax code that make those loopholes available, on purpose, or by failing to foresee the ways accountants may devise to dodge said tax!

Sick of Southern Rail? There's a crowdfunding site for that

jonnycando

I work for a railroad

In the US actually. And in freight to boot. But in times of terrific business, the carrier will blame us for six months or so for there not being enough of us, and then proceed to hire. If the trains are crowded there need to be more trains, and more of all crafts hired to run them. Simple math. As for on time performance...well service design is not my specialty.

Google doesn’t care who makes Android phones. Or who it pisses off

jonnycando
Coat

At the risk of entering a walled garden.....

It's the bloatware that I have detested to the point that I would make every effort to root every Android phone I've had. Or possibly wipe it and install Cyanogenmod. But that puts you on the bleeding edge, and sometimes you end up with a phone that CM has no OS for. So I reckon for the near future, I'll stick with Googles own Nexus line. I'll get the latest Android version and at least several updates, and minimal bloat. And if I want to try CM or some other, it's a fairly trivial task.

Burger-slinger Wendy’s admits: Cash-till data breach hit 1 in 20 outlets

If the firmware in POS devices was unique and not based on any existing OS. And it's communications protocol ought to be unique as well. Thus standard malware's could installed since the device would not understand anything not written in its own language. Oh but malcontents would reverse engineer them and see what them go. Guess we'll just have to use cash from now on.
