Browsers could face two regimes in Europe as UK law set to diverge from EU

"In Brexit Headcase Land, the rest of the world is going to put in huge amounts of expensive work to comply with the UK's new shiny different-for-the-sake-of-being-different regulations."

I dont see where that is said though. Just because it will be less difficult in the UK doesnt mean they wont comply with EU regs if the EU is their market (just like all trade must meet the importing countries regs). So unless that is somehow wrong the rest of your comment is irrelevant.

Sounds like it will mostly make things easier domestically which is why we wanted to leave the EU. As I said in an earlier comment this isnt some breakaway make our own rules brexit win just as its not really something worth noting from the EU side. Seems fairly tame and almost pointless in my opinion.

They cared when cutting off the UK would plunge them into immediate recession. Thats why their own banks were begging the EU not to do something really stupid after their bid to 'woo' the banks failed to our amusement.

codejunky Silver badge

Meh

Usual bed wetting aside as far as the UK companies go they will either comply with GDPR for EU access or if they are domestic and or rest of the world they will have slightly less restriction. This doesnt sound like some fantastic getting away from EU rules but remainers are right to point out the EU are little children who might threaten adequacy rules just as they punish NI out of spite.

Looking at the EU in all its magnificence is anyone under the illusion they wouldnt blow another foot off to 'win'? If they did revoke adequacy the EU probably realises the UK has little reason to hold on to other regulations. And as they fear the UK being competitive if unchained by EU rules it might make them think twice.

Only if we are lucky. Since most people just hit accept but have to put up with the bureaucratic 'tick box' exercise of annoying people it would be considered an improvement. Almost like those days longed for where the internet was free of the infestations of clipboard wielders and other bansturbation fetishists.

Do people remember the days when you could go online and go to the page you wanted to see. That it would come up and you start interacting with it. Before they littered it with an annoying banner you ignored at the bottom of the screen. Before the annoying banner people ignored had to be interacted with first. When the internet was free of most government involvement and we laughed at China for their 'great firewall'. Before organisations like the EU imposed rules that some US companies didnt bother complying with and so shutting the EU off from direct viewing.

"The premise of using another country as a "deterrent" is racist."

How is it racist to expect our borders to be respected? That our immigration process be respected? It doesnt matter where they are from if they are criminal aka illegally breaching the borders. We dont have an open borders policy.

"That it happens to be a poorer blacker country"

That agrees, shockingly for money. They are willing to do so which is possibly why Denmark and the EU looked at Rwanda too for the same purposes.

"which feeds into the colonial mindset of seeing poorer blacker countries as resources to be exploited"

That is where it seems to fall into the woke rabbit hole of uselessness. Should we not be willing to do business with poor black countries because *woke*? That sounds kinds racist just because they are poorer and darker than we are. I'm sure is entirely coincidental /s.

Thats ok we all have our favorite sources and they cant be right all the time either. But unless some stunning new piece of information comes out the French seem to have been caught unprepared and its causing a big enough problem that light is being shone on the incident. If it didnt cause so much disruption the media probably wouldnt have said much and the politicians wouldnt have highlighted the lack of staff.

Whatever happened has buggered up plans for lots of people. The cynic in me wonders if the French intentionally did it to then suggest we rejoin (as they have) but rationally I just expect it was a simple screw up that wouldnt have been noticed if the impact wasnt so bad.

"So any accusations of underfunding infrastructures or understaffing on the French side appear to be without merit. Meanwhile, on the UK side..."

Hmm. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/jul/23/dover-travel-chaos-border-gridlock-brexit

Look at the dreamy article, its not the French yadda yadda so on. And yet with desperation to support that argument look at the end of the article-

A regional government official for Nord-Pas-de-Calais said in a statement on Friday evening that French officials had “of course anticipated the increased traffic levels” and put in place “an appropriate level of staffing”.

He said a “technical incident” at the Channel tunnel meant French border police had not been at full operating capacity in Dover until 8.45am on Friday, an hour later than planned, by which time long delays had built up.

Even the desperate cant cover up that the French police were not running at capacity no matter how they try to minimise the blame on the French. Apparently this was the French being prepared and anticipating the work! This is the rosy spectacle picture.

Even when it talks about adding more capacity at Dover this gem is mentioned-

The port said the extra booths would be “installed before the summer getaway weekend” of 22-24 July, but conceded their operation would depend on French “resourcing levels, and we know resourcing around Europe … is tight”.

Even the guardian cant put a positive spin on this. Now look elsewhere-

https://www.connexionfrance.com/article/French-news/French-authorities-say-technical-issue-led-to-Dover-staff-shortages

“We are deeply frustrated that the resource at the French border overnight and early this morning has been woefully inadequate to meet our predicted demand and even more deeply regret the consequences that will now be felt by so many,” a statement issued by the Port reads.

Re: A hack

@AC

"As a Brexiteer all answers are easy, but as a free marketeer I'm sure you understand that what happens is that first you pay a business or organisation for goods or services and secondly they give you the finished product or service."

Yup. So we offer more money for them to do the service they should already be doing but instead of stopping such illegal migration their ships shadow the boats to help them cross into English waters. However as the French seemed more complicit in allowing the crossings while taking UK money the UK refused to pay for a lack of service. As a free marketeer or not surely you expect the other half to fulfil their obligations or you dont reward them with your money.

"At the very least the customer needs to show willing with a down payment. "

Which we already do. That was additional money.

"They couldn't actually get to their place of work because of the traffic queues building up as Dover doesn't have the space to operate at such a scale after Brexit."

Oh wow! Just imagine if the French booths were actually manned in the first place! Do you think maybe that might make a difference instead of manning the booths AFTER the problem built up? The situation only improving AFTER the French decided to provide enough manpower to open the booths they already have!

Are you claiming brexit made the French incompetent? Lazy? Stupid? Because if the problem is too many vehicles to process for all the booths then you could potentially be right, but thats not what happened. Not enough booths were open to process the traffic, the booths already exist and did at the time. Brexit not the problem. Under-staffing by the French was.

Re: A hack

@AC

"Only the UK don't actually pay,"

You may need to read your source to understand why the payment was withheld. Because the French didnt do their part so why pay them.

"Pushing back migrants out of UK waters instead of rescuing them is illegal by the way."

Back into French waters where they came. Where they can be picked up by the French which our border force communicate with. But again it demonstrates why the UK withheld payment to the French not doing enough.

"And finally on to more mundane matters (this weekend in Dover), Simon Calder is right about everything travel related. But I guess the British government decided it's cheaper to blame the French instead of building more passport booths."

Except the solution to the backlog was for the French to decide to actually man the booths that already exist. Because the booths wernt fully manned in the first place. If they aint there they cant do the work! Shocking!

Re: A hack

@GNU SedGawk

"It is nakedly racist as the purpose of sending people to Rwanda is explicitly colonial in its imagery and intent."

Eh? Is this just woke words for fun?

"It fundamentally rests as a "deterrent""

Yes. To deter criminals from trying to skip the asylum process and jump to the front of the queue while people following the legal asylum process are impacted.

"The law of England/Wales requires a person be physically present to make an claim"

Which they can enter the country legally (e.g. by travel or student visa). Smuggling through the many European countries illegally to risk crossing the channel to get to the UK should not put them at the front of the queue.

"if we wanted to stop them coming we'd tactically put infrastructure in France"

Dont we pay the French for this?

"and allow the application to be made remotely, so a physical presence is no longer required."

Why? We would only do that if we wanted people to be applying from abroad. Surely its our choice not to? And these people are in a safe country already.

codejunky Silver badge

Re: A hack

@GNU SedGawk

"No. People think its disgusting behaviour which is nakedly racist in its use of an African Country explicitly both as a punishment, and as a "dumping ground" for "undesirables"."

Why is it as a punishment or even racist? Illegal (hence criminal) immigration by people smuggling into the country, avoiding any asylum application to enter the country, being sent somewhere suitable for processing. And you might be right about undesirables as criminals who dont wish to be processed by claiming asylum travel these routes.

"It's not remotely illegal to put ones life at risk crossing the worlds busiest shipping lane in a laughably unseaworthy vessel, in order to demand that country abide by the treaties it signed."

It is absolutely illegal. And the UK is abiding by its treaties. In fact the UK could automatically reject just applications as it is only obliged to consider asylum applications.

"Refoulement is the practice of forcibly returning refugees or asylum seekers to a country where they are liable to be subjected to persecution. It is illegal under international law."

So they need returning to France? But they dont want to be there, they broke the law to enter a country illegally at great risk to their lives. They are criminals by that point so if they wish for the UK to hear their application at that point they shouldnt be allowed to jump the queue over those legally requesting asylum.

"The lawyer added that the agency was concerned about the risk of "serious, irreparable harm" caused to refugees sent to Rwanda, emphasising the body "in no way endorses the UK-Rwandan arrangement".```"

Maybe this will promote the use of legal means instead of illegally entering the country.

Assuming your not trolling (I do have a pet AC troll that follows me) the UK actually pays the French to meet their legal responsibilities of stopping illegal immigration and safety in the channel. Failure would be French inadequacy. However I do agree with that comment as we cant seem to send the illegals to Rwanda for some stupid excuse nor have a border force willing to push back boats as they should to protect our border.

Erm, read the comment? The one your replying to which I have answered.

"What exactly constitutes murder has been hotly debated for a very, very long time and isn't going to be resolved by you or I on here"

Exactly. Its something even medical professionals cant answer and so the democratic right to elect officials to represent the views of the population and the populations views on mothers vs babies right to freedom of choice and right to life. Instead of dictated by a court that didnt have the right at all to misinterpret the constitution to push their agenda regardless of our opinion of right or wrong on this hotly contested debate.

"But one thing is certain: by removing the right at federal level"

They didnt, solved. They removed the authoritarian bastardization of the constitution which did remove rights at a state level.

I agree. I expect it will blow over fairly well, most states will allow abortion or allow crossing state lines (officially or not) for abortions and any outliers will be happy with their choice bar those who wish the opposite (as it was before).

FYI: My personal views on abortion are relatively pro. There is a solid argument of contraception before it gets that far and also there is a solid argument over equal rights for parents and how men should have more say. But my opinion isnt the same as the next and across cultural and religious lines there will be a wide variety of opinion even just across states.

"They don't want one in Ireland, and they (DUP) don't want the one in the Irish Sea - BUT until you get one of those borders accepted Brexit will never be completed."

Rep Ireland has the choice of a border in Ireland or a border in Ireland. This is where the sovereignty bit of them not being in the position to automatically dictate to the UK but having to come to agreements for UK cooperation. Personally I think its an issue for the Irish to decide but the EU need to be told where to shove it first (as they are trying to inflict harm to NI).

"Honestly, don't you have better things to do than troll."

You are complaining about my comment pointing out your worthless response to my comment as trolling. Maybe if your response had something in it making it not a troll in itself then maybe I would have responded better? But I am guessing you had nothing better to do than troll.

"Can you kindly explain how removing personal choice granted at a federal level and turning it over to religiously-motivated nutjobs at state level is increasing personal freedom."

Thats what you think happened? I guess if your particularly in favour of the specific authoritarian diktat then I guess you might hold that view, but what happens if the next diktat is against your opinion/morality?

What actually happened was the constitution was intentionally abused to claim it supported federal authoritarian control over a topic it had no control over. This was then used to bypass the US governmental system to dictate the law even against the democratic beliefs of the very voting people. The US was intentionally set up to try and limit this kind of federal overreach and the serious breach has now been undone.

That means an increase in freedom, because the federal government does not get to dictate something it has no right to dictate.

Now lets imagine someone gets into power that is an actual nutjob (as you fear in your comment), they would be able to take the abuse of power and consent of the people to accept the abuse of power to abuse things further! If a nutjob is in charge of a single state they do not get to screw up the entire US. This is why when the left talked about packing the supreme court anyone not far left pointed out this opens up for more of the same in future, especially if someone else gets in who is a nutjob.

"You can't, because it is, to use an intellectual word, Bollocks."

Here is an interesting question- at what point is a clump of fertilised cells can be called life? At what point is it murder? At what stage do we consider abortion for personal choice? None of these questions I can answer and in the medical profession they still cant answer. So for you to think you have the absolutist certainty of truth and any question of your almighty intelligence is bollocks doesnt work in your favour.

See, when you post a comment with some actual content you get a better reply. Even if you dont like what is said.

"Do you seriously believe that serious criminals will be risking their lives to cross the English Channel in a dinghy"

Yes. Because legal asylum may not be available to murderers/rapists/etc.

"These are desperate people, risking their lives for a better, safer life."

As I said, fleeing the hellhole of the third world known as France. And to get to France passing through those other backward hellholes of Europe. The UK must be a freaking paradise.

"They shouldn't have to. Nobody should have to do such a thing, but when it comes to the life of your partner and children, what would you not do?"

Your right. Dont stay in a safe country. Dont apply for asylum in a safe rich country but instead (your description is better life) become an economic migrant but break the law to enter the country of your choice. Risking the lives of women and children (so much for equality) is obviously worth it to leave rich countries in Europe to get to the one they want to reach. Cant say I would do that to my family.

"Would you stand by and see them tortured and killed"

Have you highlighted these atrocities by the French? Maybe the human rights organisations need to know that the various European countries including France (where they travel from) is torturing and killing them.

"That's what most of these people are trying to seek, not a life as a serious criminal"

Instead of applying for asylum like other asylum seekers they intend to travel through Europe and illegally breach the UK borders. Some of who will be doing due to their criminal background. Since no official statistics are kept on such here are some examples from a quick search-

https://www.migrationwatchuk.org/news/2021/04/12/victims-of-the-uks-failure-to-enforce-its-borders

"As for the risk of serious criminals entering the UK, I suspect considerably more just walk in normally or live here already."

That doesnt work. If your business can only survive by your staff buying your product you will lose money and collapse. "It's odd how people praise technology for realising people from the mundane, but whine like a 2 year old when their nicely paid job gets offloaded to a bot or another country."

Why? Both make perfect sense. The short termism and (understandably) selfish desire not to change vs the overall benefit that improves peoples lives? Just as luddites loo concerned about their self interest but the advancements making everyone better off.

"And yes it does help and saved millions, but it's easy to forget all those millions and millions that died due to "progress"."

Or died due to lack of progress. Which is visible around the world in the poorer countries.

"Disease became rampant in the cities due to poor sanitation, poor working and cramped living conditions. Millions were injured or died through industrial accidents."

Just like slums of peasants who are in absolute poverty instead of relatively comfortable relative poverty. The freeing up of labour so people could actually train to be medical professionals, construction professionals and so on which alleviated those very problems. And providing enough free time for people to volunteer to go drill a well for those absolutely poor in the world.

"Unless there is a safety net, poverty and its associated issues could become rampant."

A safety net that cannot actually exist at all full stop without exception unless there is sufficient advancement to make people rich enough to provide a safety net. Otherwise all those actually poor people could be saved at the flick of a wand.

@nematoad

"As elsergiovolador says above who will they sell all this stuff to if no-one has a job?"

If amazon relies on its own staff to buy its products to stay in business it will certainly fail. Just as automation has improved agriculture and manufacturing this is just another improvement which benefits us all. Especially those who are mistreated working the job.
