Windows 10 grabs 22 per cent desktop market share in a year

Teiwaz

Re: hey I'm a "0.0015%"-er

As a 'Linux user I'd like to know what websites are counted. Facebook and twitter no doubt among them. I'd probably be fairly confident if I said I visited none with anything approaching regularity, occasional or less.

El reg users as representative - not likely. Since these figure include mobiles, smart Tvs and game consoles, it's too big a sample to declare on 'desktop'.

What's this fuss over 'Desktop Linux' anyway, 'Window Manager Linux' has always been more than sufficient for my needs, right back to FVWM.

Windows 10 still free, even the Anniversary Update, if you're crass

Pokemon Gone? - If only...

I know a few into it, I know plenty who don't see the point. I've been told I'm a grumpy guy who just doesn't get it, but I just don't want to as I have an obsessive personality. I have enough to contend with keeping the ones I have in check.

Mickey Mouse Club had Mickey Mouse security: Disney's Playdom forum pours out passwords

Teiwaz

Re: I spend to much time on the internet.....

"..when I saw "Disney's Playdom" I just thought of princess themed dungeon with a dominatrix dress as Elsa from Frozen."

- Disappointed? Thankfully, several Deviant Artists have already knocked up a few attempts on the concept (I'm actually only surprised there aren't more). No links 'cause definitely NSFW.

Re: I am in a world of shit

I remember the Tv show too. It was #2* on my list of annoying unwatchable excrement by the time I was 8.

*Just after 'Why Don't You'. (and if it was after 'Why Don't You', it was a really bad telly day - no VHS back then either).

"We've gone on holiday by mistake."

The classic line from Withnail & I, called to mind by this 'mistake'. Clearly on both occasions not a mistake, a lack of forethought, intelligence, but not a mistake.

Re: Drone Delivery? Sign me up!

additional for a uk delivery company beginning with 'Y' with delivery staff who only fill in the time on their mostly green delivery cards if you're not there, leaving you to guess who the missed delivery was for, if it was for the address at all, and where the package is now.

Teiwaz

I can see that becoming a common enough occurrence for Amazon Warehouse/despatch and cat rescue centres.

Just because humans wander about in a fog of their own thoughts doesn't mean other animals are as unwary, especially cats.

Shouldn't Advertising Standards not force them to remove 'Pro' from the product title? This doesn't sound like a professional product any more.

Re: Also a name change-

'Puzzled...'

I wouldn't say Desktop 'Linux is a success, but there is plenty of interest in 'Linux in the desktop for those that like it, but seemingly little interest from Microsoft in Windows Phone - If they had a shred of decency, they'd bin the project and buy up all the remaining handsets so poor sods don't buy a dead duck.

Milk IN the teapot: Innovation or abomination?

Re: Warm the pot!

"Remember many 'acquired taste' teas don't have milk at all."

Three points.

- I quite like Earl Grey or Lady Grey with milk...

- I draw the line at 'those fruit teas', never ever add milk to those...

- I'm a black coffee fanatic mostly, so, my taste buds are pretty well desensitized.

My coat, 'cause, might as well be prepared...

Cyberpunks might not be crooks but they're really very rude

Teiwaz

Re: That's it?

Falling standards, yes, it's been creeping in, has anybody been keeping tabs when it'll reach idiocracy levels or are we there already, 'and I've just been too wrapped up in myself to notice?' as Arthur Dent once put it.

As to 'cyberpunk', does seem light on the cyber, or was he just too 'punk' to bother about the capslock issue? Certainly not 'cyber' enough to take note of his spellchecker.

Exclusive transcript: WikiLeaks reveals ass call from a zoo

Teiwaz

Transcript 'sort of' reminded me of a cartoon in a book of 'classic British Seaside postcards' in which the dialogue reads 'Mummy, Mummy, Daddy must have swallowed an elephant, 'cause I can see its trunk sticking out.'

When I read 'ass call' and 'from a zoo' I was expecting harassment calls from the narrower end of the US gene pool.

Australian Banks ask permission to form anti-Apple cartel

Teiwaz

"Other cartels are, when openly formed, like those for hardware standards"

- We don't have nearly enough of those...Apples idea of standards is something you get when you 'buy into' apple. No guarantee it won't be altered at their whim. The Banks clearly aren't happy with apple as the gatekeeper for this technology considering 35-40% of their customers are using it (possibly higher when you factor in the slightly higher disposable income of many apple users).

Teiwaz

It's either one large special interest group or another.

You could argue Apple is trojan horsing here. 35-40% is enough to snowball through a certain amount of ubiquity for apple pay, as there already is for itunes.

"What are those "liberal media" you speak of? Inquiring minds, etc."

Teiwaz

the liberal media's encouragment...

What is a liberal media, I thought most Americans got their news from Fox.

Meanwhile, on the east side of the pond, it's not all tea and unstraightened teeth, we know the difference between 'another' self-serving career shark whose playing the game of politics and a loose canon likely to thoughtlessly upset the wrong applecart.

Some applecarts could do with overturning, the system no longer serves the greater good, but not blindly and without thought in pursuit of media attention.

Iraqi government finally bans debunked bomb-finding dowsing rods

Teiwaz

Re: "dowsing"

"Would the success at dowsing in any way be related to walking up and down the area in question and looking down?"

- Well, if you were going to do it that way, it'd be more logical to divide the area into small squares with bits of string and actually get on your hands and knees and search properly. Walking up and down looking down is just trusting to luck.

I had some success in the past with a pair of dowsing rods (just bent coat hangers), I've found lost items, including my fathers signet ring lost in the garden (quit quickly as I recall). It's not the tool, it's the human connection to his environment and the universe.

Clearly in this case it's a rip.

Re: why no linkage love? 'Bing' isn't a thing

"No we don't. That's not a thing." - Did you 'google' 'bing it' to check (or even duckduck it?)

OffBeatMammal - Thinks it is, seemingly. He named himself well.

Had it been in common parlance, it wouldn't have drawn my attention. There are few URLs with 'bingit' in the title (probably owned or sponsored by MS), but I doubt even inside Microsoft many use 'bing it'.

Teiwaz

Re: why no linkage love? 'Bing'?

As if 'google' wasn't endemic enough, now we have 'Bing'...

- 'Bing my way round the internet' Sounds like something that moral folklore tells us will give you hairy palms or a way of using the internet by playing Pinball.

The Right thing

ChromeOS doesn't have the advantage of being ubiquitous yet, Android does.

I'd expect the take up of Chromebooks would be far higher had they been androidbooks. People know android, they know what to expect as are familiar with it on their phones. The percentage bothered to run 'doctored' versions must be minimal compared to the larger group who would use what is pre-installed.

Of course there'd be still some returns, some people expect devices with a laptop design to run windows programs.

Re: sandporn? Rule 34

"Teiwaz seems to have understood that."

(unaccountably chuffed) Yup!, thought that was obvious (hedgeporn, sandporn), I didn't understand Rule34 though, perhaps it's mistaken reference and the first google on the topic 'anything that exists, will have porn on it' - what, including coffee tables* and dead rabbits?

* well in my case maybe, if it wasn't for the requirement to appear not a complete deviant ecchi hentai and possible danger to society.

'War is good for business'? - So it's not the Rules Acquisition then?

Ah, this one https://rule34.paheal.net/ - granted, I didn't uncover the entire rabbit corpse to check at the time (as I recall it was all I could do not to vomit).

A dead rabbit - So maybe not.

Free Windows 10 upgrade: Time is running out – should you do it?

Teiwaz

Re: Windows8.2=10 is a fraud and a scam!

Agreed

"Rumour has it, that the "Windows 10 Anniversary Edition", due on August 2nd, has a minimum RAM requirement of 2GB, which will kill off most older netbooks"

- Obligatory, 'won't kill my netbook off, it's running Ubuntu'. With netbooks, you at least have options, damn all option on the tablets though (and before anybody poo poos unity, I mostly use i3, but there's no i3buntu).

Teiwaz

All new CPUs will ONLY run Win 10....?

That 900lb gorilla you're seeing must be a result of drinking too much screen cleaner fluid.

Are you sure you are not confused with boot lock-down perpetrated by some OEMs (those with their heads far up the MS alimentary canal)? Or Windows7 not being sold pre-installed any more. Not the same as CPUs at all. Last machine I bought little over a year ago from a small OEM had options for a choice of OS pre-installed for a price or nothing on it all. I didn't pay over the odds either (at least I didn't think so).

If you don't like mass-market shenanigans, don't buy mass-market.

Teiwaz

Re: I solved all this years ago by getting an iMac

"I just installed OpenSUSE onto my machines."

- I'm going to get that post framed for the novelty value. OpenSuse'? are you sure you didn't mean to write 'Mint' (might be easy to get them confused, they both have greenish themes).

I'm not one-sided, I've Ubuntu on one machine and Archlinux on another. I'm just astonished somebody decided on something other than Mint (and not for SystemD issues), as if that is the only workable 'Linux distro.

Re: Windows8.2=10 is a fraud and a scam!

"Simple fact is that with Windows10 the updates keep coming. At some point they will need to update the kernel in a way you will need new drivers. Tough luck, if your hardware is not supported any more."

- As Londo Mollari might put it "To you, this is less nefarious?". Above sounds nefarious enough, at any time, without notice (if you are not keeping track of update details, which most users don't) any peripheral can suddenly stop working or your entire computer.

Unlikely, (but maybe), not so much a shot to the foot as to the head. It sounds like updates will be like a game of Russian roulette.

I don't like Mondays, Pokemon, Twitter or Facebook – Sir Bob Geldof

Teiwaz

There has always been meaningless obsession and overhype.

I remember LiveAid. You really couldn't avoid hearing about it for months. After several weeks of the pre-concert hype, I had my first reaction to over-advertising and decided to ignore it.

Yeah Bob, Facebook, twitter, pokemon-go are the same, While pokemon will go away eventually like your overhyped 1980's concert, and your abyssmal comunication style, Facebook and it's ilk will try to stay in your face. Just ignore it, if all you use is an old nokia, that shouldn't be too hard.

Between the gov trying to sell you medical history, to the Beeb trying to grab the opportunity, we just have to wait until Brexit then we'll be reclassified as serfs?

Nintendo to investors: Pokémon Go won't make money come

Teiwaz

Not the only thing over-inflated.

Most Pokemon-go-ers will get fed up once the novelty runs out, band wagon slows down, the challenge goes up and the pokemon get harder to catch. That'll leave the hardcore nutcasesfans to actually keep going and maybe laying out money.

Any sign of Nintendos new console yet?
