Our Vulture strokes Dell's ROBUST 15 INCHER: Inspiron 15 Core i7

NeverYouMind

I bought this exact model (7537) recently as I want to replace my 5yo Samsung laptop that had seen me through Uni.

Really like it so far, bit of a hefty thing but I don't mind it really. The main criteria I wanted it for was at least an Haswell i5, 8GB and 1080p display. Only downside (or upside) was that to get the 8GB RAM & the 1080p display I had to pick the i7 option. There still doesn't seem to be many laptops out there that will do it at the price I wanted. Every fricking laptop seems to be perennially stuck with that stupid 1366x768 resolution. My 5yo laptop already had 1280x800!

Plus after having checked the Owners Manual on Dell's site I found I can upgrade the HDD to an SSD at a later stage. Can't really do that on most Ultrabook-style laptops unless you pick it at time of purchase.

Only downsides for me personally is that the track pad can be a bit stupid and not always picking up or registering 2-finger scrolls and the Intel Wi-Fi on-board can be a bit hesitant at times to connect to Wi-Fi even though it looks like it has done. Still having to get used to the keyboard being shifted to the left due to the extra number pad which I didn't have on my previous one.

Otherwise it's a smashing bit of kit for the price and will easily last me another 3-5 years I plan on keeping it.

India orders 7.5 million Microsoft cloud services

Happy

Live@Edu...

...Is surprisingly good. My Uni switched from internal MS Exchange to L@E and most students much prefer it.

I like the fact that its based on MS Exchange rather than the Hotmail backend (even though you log in through a Hotmail frontend).

Chinese whispers point to Huawei bid for Motorola

Coffee/keyboard

Twas expected

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Google kept the patents, gave Moto an unlimited licence to use them and flogged the business off. Would make the most sense afterall.

Providing Moto's encrypted phones / walkie-talkie business unit are kept in US-hands (like Congress or the FTC would probably order), then I doubt Congress would block Google's sale of Moto to Huawei.

If Moto was essentially Google's preferred choice to do Android handsets then it would definately piss off the likes of Samsung or HTC.

Apple shoots for Premier League soccer streaming rights

Meh

Ahhh...

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the Premier League decide to create a 'new' set of broadcast rights markets that are specifically for these style of set-top boxes (like the AppleTV, Google TV, Xbox & PS3 too) just so they can milk out an extra £500m+ out of these companies.

But on the other hand, if it means less games are set to be shown on Sky Sports then by all means do it, for me that will be Sky's punishment for taking half of Formula 1 behind a paywall.

A rapid first hands-on: Nokia’s Windows phones

NeverYouMind
Meh

I do like the looks and spec of the Lumia 800 and will probably buy one as a replacement of my now 3yr old HTC TyTN2 but it's royally annoyed me that they didn't release any info on the Nokia 'Ace' which would have been the top of the line one with a portrait keyboard.

How hard is it for companies in the phone manufacturing business to release well designed, solidly built and well spec'd phones?!? Is Apple the only one that can do it?

I don't want an iPhone cos everyone and their dog has one, I don't want an Android (as to me, it's a more modern version of Windows Mobile 6.x, where you can customised the s**t out of it), I want a WP7 cos it looks good and is reasonable powerful and more suited to me.

I may work in IT but it doesn't mean I want a full-on techie phone like Android or a super simplistic one like Apple :/

1m iPad 3s being built this quarter, says analyst

Facepalm

Never quite understand these analysts.

All they bleeding want is the share price to go up so they make money and the last Apple prediction they all did was the equivalent of pigs learning to fly with all the iPhone 5 rumours abound.

Why the hell should we believe them this time around?

One of the biggest bunch of numpties going.
