Begone, Demon Internet: Vodafone to shutter old-school pioneer ISP
Re: Wild West Days
His contracts with his customers were fulfilled. He owed them nothing more.
If I was running an ISP like demon around the time the big telecoms companies (with their networks, money, and other infrastrucure) started to sniff around at the thought of becoming ISPs, I'd have sold out for the fattest cheque too.

Re: I guess it's a good time
I only just read your comment, and couldn't work out the context of the quote, and did even click on the wiggly arrow (technical term) to see the parent post, and scratched my head when I couldn't see where the original poster wrote about Firefox start menus, and started to question my sanity, and got reminded to take my pills, and then did so, then did so again, just to be sure, and I can see double rainbows, and now I just read your follow up post, and now i realise i'm not actually any more insane than usual, so instead, now I can laugh at you............

Re: ZFS and rotating snapshots
I live by snapshots.(though mainly on ufs not zfs)
Amongst other things, I always do a diff of a file I've been editing to make sure I've not accidentally made typos, or injected some weird characters.
No longer do rogue problems crop up that can be traced to a spurious ^Z in the source code!
All the admins fault
You should never assume that files in the users storage area follow your naming convention, however common it might be in your area of work.
As others have said, it could be .template, or the users initials.

When I was in Israel, I was tasked with removing a small spider from the room. I calmly pushed a piece of paper under him, and as I was about to pick it up to throw out of the window, the bastard jumped, almost hitting my face (I was bending down at the time)
That really gave me the willies. Apparently we have them over here too, but I've only ever come across them in Israel.

It's a Christmas miracle: Logitech backs down from Harmony home hub API armageddon
Re: Logically...with tech ....
If I was doing that to access some external web service, etc. then, yes, I'd expect things to change without warning.
When it's a device I paid for, sitting in my house, I expect the opposite.
If the API itself was causing a security issue, then if critical, maybe they could have closed it down... However, in that case they should have groveled hugely, and said that the disabled functionality would be restored as soon as possible.
But no, they said "tough". They only backtracked because of all the fallout.
So saying "working on making it available in a more supported manner is also the correct behaviour" would be fine, if it wasn't for their initial refusal to do so.

Re: Facebook's shadow profile.
There is a database of the location of wifi routers by MAC. And as those databases are updated, it becomes obvious which ones are static.
And on android (at least as far as 5.1 - i've not tested higher) any app could read the MAC of the router the android was connected to. This was without granting special privileges, such as location details etc, in fact it works without granting any privileges at all.

Isn't that a shame. If only you had some sort of lethal tool to defend yourselves from the government which is trying to replace you with, ahem, shall we say, less-skilled and more easily-controlled people..."
Really?
If our lack of free speech was so bad, how come cunts like you get to post here?
Jail for speaking out.....? Too much fox news, there, laddie.

"Speaking only for myself, if guns were outlawed I still know where to get one, and I'd feel far more certain that the person I want to rob wouldn't have one to protect himself, as most people wouldn't want to break the law by having a gun. And, as a criminal, I couldn't care less that I'm breaking the law by having one."
And as a criminal, you'd also know that you were much less likely to need to carry a gun.

"So the fact that the USA is the only industrialised country to REDUCE CO2 emissions must please you?"
Please note, this isn't Fox forums. You can't get away with posting bullshit.
Readers here will either know it's bullshit, or will fact-check your claim.
https://grist.org/briefly/which-country-is-doing-the-most-to-reduce-its-carbon-emissions/ - Hint, not the USA.
https://www.wri.org/blog/2016/04/roads-decoupling-21-countries-are-reducing-carbon-emissions-while-growing-gdp - 21countries! Yes, USA is one of them (just), but you 'forgot' the other 20.
https://www.cntraveler.com/gallery/countries-doing-the-most-to-fight-climate-change - USA not mentioned at all.
But don't worry, the USA isn't the only country to not meet its own climate goals
However, Trump must be number 1: https://climateactiontracker.org/countries/usa/:
"The Trump Administration has spent 2018 systematically gutting US federal climate policy. If the proposed actions are fully implemented, greenhouse gas emissions projections for the year 2030 could increase by up to 400 MtCO2e[1] over what was projected when Pres. Trump entered office. That’s almost as much as the entire state of California emitted in 2016.

I did do penetration testing for a while... paid to hack, but I'd love to do 'red teaming' in a more general sense. It would be almost like being a spy!
Cheers for that - I'd never heard the term "red teaming" before - I had to look it up
Re: Stanger in a strange land..
"Ummm, being British does not rule you out from also being Jewish you know, Mr. Stanger."
I know, which is why I qualified "I'm British" with "not Jewish". It was a list: "British, not Jewish,..." not a clairification ("British - not Jewish")
Still have an upvote for pointing out my subject title... I did write it on android! (I know, still no excuse!)
Stanger in a strange land..
My first experience of doom was in an empty computer lab in Bar-Ilan University, Tel-Aviv.
2 of the system admins there took me to this room, unplugged and terminated the ethernet from the rest of the department lan, and proceeded to blast the hell out of me so much, I never stood a chance.
The only "weird" thing of this story is I'm British, not Jewish, and was never a student in Israel.. I was actually staying with a girl I met on irc, and we snuck into the uni to get online(!) - not sure how she talked us through security.. it was all Hebrew to me! But I hung around the computer centre for a few hours whilst she went shopping.
When I was back home, I used to do the same thing at Swansea university.. I was never a student there, but acted like I was, and it got to the point the security guards would chat to me on patrols, and open the barrier for me (I was driving) without stopping me because they got to know me. But I digress...
It's amazing what you can get away with if you simply act like you belong somewhere (and are a cocky gobshite like me!)

Which country would that be, if you don't mind me asking?
One tends to work out - or guess - where some of the posting regulars are from..
Whilst I initially had you down as Australian (yes, too obvious) I long since had you pegged for British.
I'd love El Reg to show the country code of posters.
Re: Double down?
@Cardinal - I admit, I inherited "double-down" from the American political channels.
However, along with what Frumious Bandersnatch says, if making an error is "down", then doubling 'up' on it is doubling down.
I largely agree with the rest of your post, (and I didn't downvote you)
Maybe I should stop using Americanisms... My bad. Have a nice day :-)

Upvoting / downvoting bug
Upvoting / downvoting bug
Has anything changed in the last 2 days?
If I up/downvote a comment it appears to work as normal. If I then reload the page, the vote seems to have been accepted server-side, but the icon no longer has that blue glow indicating it's been clicked.
You can then click it again, and the vote tally is incremented/decremented (but of course, server side detects the duplicate vote and ignores it)
So the actual vote recording is working, but it's no longer indicating to us (on reload) that we made the vote.
I've tried on chrome on FreeBSD, and some white-labelled browser on android. Both used to work, both no longer work. I don't have css/js/ad blocking etc.
ps. I have other reported bugs that haven't been fixed or replied to. Is it worth even posting here anymore?

"I do find it insulting that the self appointed great and the good decide for me which lies I can be presented with and which ones to be believe, I'm a rational thinking human being and it's my choice what sensory input I decide is trash and what's gold."
You may be. Others aren't.
I find it insulting that we have speed limits, when I know how to drive properly. I find it even more insulting we have speed bumps near schools, which damage my car, despite the fact I'd already drive at virtual walking pace in such circumstances.
I find it insulting there are security people, and CCTV camera in shops, when I've never stolen, or wanted to, in my life.
I find it insulting when there are laws to make us wear seatbelts... As if I'd ever drive without wearing one anyway!
The thing is, it's not all about me, and it's not all about you. We live in a society, and for better or worse, there are laws in place for "the greater good".
As I said, if everyone was intelligent, and critical-thinking like you, laws on public lying wouldn't be necessary.
